Mick Warner absolutely putting the boot into the AFL here, it’s a great read

It’s not very logically argued though. I’m not making any value judgement about what it’s trying to say just that it isn’t very good writing & full of logical fallacies.

It’s about as simplistic as people who say you’re not allowed to own a smart phone and still be pro strong environmental protection laws.

Andrew Bolt & the like have been doing this schtick for years. Writing poorly argued outrage pr0n for clicks.

Again I repeat I am making no value judgement on the content or his opinion. I’m just really tired of bad writing & journalists who can’t follow the rules of logic in constructing a short opinion piece.

Ya that’s true, I think it’s still healthy to see an AFL media figure going against the grain for a change.
The point on gambling was well made. Also Sydney swans being sponsored by Qatar airways is laughable.

The people running the AFL are a bunch of massive hypocrites and as Ricky Gervais once famously said about Hollywood - they are in no position to be lecturing the public on anything.

I find myself completely uninspired listening to Dean Cox, he doesn’t strike me as an afl coach, but rather someone repeating exactly what other people say without any original ideas.

Yeah he's pretty dry, but I suspect if you are a Swans person it sounds better.
.

Definitely agree on the hypocrisy. The gambling thing is completely out of control.
It’s really becoming hate the industry, love the game for me!

Mick Warner absolutely putting the boot into the AFL here, it’s a great read 😂

AFL head office are the biggest slimebags when it comes to sport in the country.
Everything is massaged especially in the Victorian media which is allowed to control the game really.
Vic Bias is led by a media industry all based in Victoria dominating the news cycles.
Then you have coverups to protect the integrity of the sport.
But then happy to throw anyone under the bus once there no longer in the industry and wipe there hands clean.

Paul Roos said something a few months back when Sydney Swans won in 2005 Demetriou came out and attacked there game style that season and they felt they got umpired a bit differently because of it. When they got a new assistant coach in 2006 and they went over some tapes they agreed they were targeted.

As Roos sort of said what right does the AFL CEO have to come out and talk about game styles. Now he wasn't suggesting Demetriou told the umpires either to umpire the Swans differently but comments can be made and self consciously into the umpires minds.

OK, I'll play.
Rioli plays the loose, but attacking half back role that every team uses one of, as they usually have 3 talls, 1 lockdown & 1 hybrid attacking/defending.
I realise this is an oversimplification, but here goes.
Each team only has to contain on their list a better "attacking, loose, half back"
A have Milera, but injuries have cruelled him, so Rioli gets a game
B Zorko & Coleman are far better, so no
C Saad shades Rioli IMO
Coll Houston (I know, he has just gotten there), so even Nick Duckos.
E Martin (I prefer Nick Martin 4 sure)
F Clark (and he can defend as well)
G maybe
GC Flanders is okily dokily, but I can't use that one
GWS Whitfield is far, far batter
H yeah, probably gets a game
M Salem, more rounded as a player, McVee really good & can defend, Rivers versatile & quality, so no IMO
NM Sheezel better in his first year than Rioli his whole career. Shneezel does run with the mids at times, but North have so many mids
PP Houston gone, maybe yes
R basket case while they tank & draft, so yes
SK Sinclair far better
S Lizard far better
WB Dale better
wc lol

so out of 17 teams that are not GC I reckon he makes 6 teams IMO.

care to disagree? (sorry, just bored with the off season & have a work at home pair of days, but on top of it)

Go Freo
Half back flank is a high skilled position these days. There's no doubt in my mind he's a best 22 player at every single club.

It's very weirdly written. If anything, the unifying theme should be about how the afl tries to manage information/messaging and uses spin-doctors. Yet somehow he's tried to present it as a crusade against woke when some of this stuff (concussion, drug cover up) has nothing to do with woke

Used a whole heap of buzz words to get the attention of the reader base.

Is outraged about outrage.
Agree that it’s clunky and not well written but despite that it’s a rare occasion when a afl media member actually calls out the rank hypocrisy of Andrew Dillon and co.

To be clear, I’ve got no issue personally with things like welcome to country. People who get outraged about that are idiots.
I do have a problem with the saturation of gambling ads, and there’s been pretty much an omertà on this topic from the AFL “media”.

Sydney of all teams holding an annual pride match when they have Qatar Airways funding them is so damn hypocritical it’s actually funny at this stage. The message they deliver in the pride game is honourable, but how could you take it seriously when the club is also receiving sponsorship from a grubby money, middle Eastern, anti gay dictatorship?

You’ll be a long time waiting for Damien Barrett or Hutchy to call this one out.

Being total hypocrites in other area of your business while also publicly advocating for social justice issues actually does more harm than good to the causes in question in my view.

Exactly. Thematically it’s all over the shop.

It's cuck incel drivel that should have been posted in the politics thread, and now there's a page wasted on it. The bloke didn't even bother to translate the American framing. The 'radical left'. What would normal people think that means? Greenies on skateboards?
Where is the politics thread? I thought they got rid of it on this board

We did.

Small discussions like this are fine as long as they don’t get out of hand. Plus it relates directly to footy.

Otherwise we’ll direct you to the main board.

"Let me rant sanctimoniously about your sanctimony and your dodgy corporateness while funded by a dodgy corporation".

Where’s that “everything I don’t like is woke” pic? A few good points about afl spin, and profit over ethics are lost in a rant about the radical left and wokeness. It’s exhausting.

It also fundamentally reduces the impact of the article. The AFL won’t take any notice of this article because it can be easily dismissed.

An article about the hypocrisy of the AFL’s social policies combined with their gambling revenue couldn’t be easily dismissed but all the other shit just allows the AFL to just ignore it.

Feels like a lot of writers, politicians and anyone using the media is jumping on the Trump train.

Nice has peaked & tough anti-woke is the new black.
well the pendulum always swings too far and then by nature, overcorrects. Always has, seemingly always will.

i didn't like how the article was written also but see a different angle.

Taking your example: "It’s about as simplistic as people who say you’re not allowed to own a smart phone and still be pro strong environmental protection laws."

Issue for me is in the "you're not allowed to". This is where the AFL and other corps go too far IMO. It's great to support people groups or individuals, particularly minorities or those disenfrachised, or a cause you or others believe is positive. But when corporations say "it's this or you're wrong/wrong side of history or some other version of a black 'n white absolute, they undoubtably set themselves up to tie themselves in knots and hypocrisy. That's what many of us are tired of. You don't have to be 'right' or 'left' to roll your eyes at the hypocrisy. Companies existing to make profit (or 'not for profits' paying high salaries while avoiding taxes) and often run by sociopaths and other such types who claw their way to the top while climbing over the backs of others, telling us simple folk how to think about moral issues. Unsuprisingly many of us roll our eyes and get back to watching the footy, while others jump on their high horses on their social media of choice and pound away at the keyboard and reduce complex circumstances to basic one word capture-alls like 'woke', 'incel', 'trumpish', 'left' and 'right' etc. Basically explains what my Christmas lunch will devolve into once again by the late afternoon and the bottles are empty.

'Wokeism' is such a dumb, nebulous concept and is this instance its use is criminally lazy because the gambling and concussion issues are such low hanging fruit with real human cost.

As others have said, a well-reasoned, incisive article here would've turned the screws at least a little. Warner wrote The Boys Club which by all accounts, is excellent.

He's really undercutting himself trying to fish for clicks.
