An Australian Football Club branches out into China playing several matches in Shanghai
- China accidentally releases a virus responsible for 7 million deaths worldwide.

After some difficulty securing Club Sponsorship the club rejoices when a Global Steel Tycoon comes to the rescue - Sanjeev Gupta loses 1.3 Billion Dollars & cripples an entire town.

Club President & Financial Guru takes up a role as Economic Director at a Market Comparison Company
- ACCC investigate the Company for not infact providing a fair "Market Comparison" only providing results from self owned companies & freezing out other competitors in the market.

You really couldn't make this shit up.

They should look to sell some games to Darwin..
The DARWIN Awards. 🤦‍♂️
As co-major partners they have some issues:

Sacking workers, delaying contractor payments. Do you think they will want to continue sponsoring “a little team from the suburbs”?
And those losses are mounting; the steelworks is continuing to haemorrhage money as workers try to revive its stricken coal-fired blast furnace, which has been offline for almost six months this year.

"The business is stressed; I'm not denying that Whyalla is losing money," Mr Gupta said.

Ps reminded me of a few years ago I analysed the major sponsors of both SA clubs

- Port Power - Oak Milk - a second rate milk consumer product selling a fraction of the local fave. Lasted a few short yrs.

- Crows - Toyota, worlds largest car company (sponsorship now for 30+ years), BHP, the worlds biggest mining company and largest ASX listed company and Singtel, Asias biggest telco company.

Spot the difference?

They finished their new performance centre and precinct upgrade (fully handout funded I presume given they are almost debt free) and presumably capitalised it all this year.
Ok makes sense if Govt and AFL grants and donations contributed materially toward it

My biggest fear as expressed to Silvers is potential overspend on Thebby (as normally happens with large building projects) causing long term debt at structurally higher interest rates.

Boy, they're really running with this "us against them" thing aren't they 😉

I also found this part from the Gupta interview strange...

"Of the 50mil Government Grant, we've spent 1 million"

I think there might be a few families this Christmas who might just like you to spend a little bit more.

Maybe the Grant is to make sure the Alberton crowd continues to get their gravy.

To Me it's baffling that a football club sponsorship wouldn't be the first thing you'd throw out from a sinking ship.

He's questioning its relevance to the Warner discussion since Warner wasn't talking about toxic masculinity.
Oh, that's good.

Being against "toxic masculinity" isn't woke.

That's good to know, hopefully we'll see the Herald Sun come out against toxic masculinity sometime soon.

Yep, I'm sure they don't think the idea of toxic masculinity is woke, not at all.

Why?

Warner listed a bunch of stuff that the typical right leaning Herald Sun reader doesn't like. Not sure whether there's any evidence the average community member feels that way.
The AFL revenue, match attendances and TV ratings were at all time highs in the 2024 season. Not sure what this journalist is bleating on about as what the AFL is doing is only having a positive impact on the state of the game.

Your comprehension needs some work.
Nowhere in the Warner article was toxic masculinity mentioned, that's purely your invention.

The article you posted I read weeks ago, good on Ollie he's a fine young man. Or a similar article posted by his school St.Pats. It's old news.

That's great to hear, obviously you don't think being against toxic masculinity is woke, Bicks. I'm happy to hear that you're a firm supporter of action against toxic masculinity. I'm expecting to see you stand firmly against the patriarchy and rise up for diversity.

Ollie sounds pretty woke to me, and good on him.

JFC, did you spill your egg and bacon roll down the front of your velour overcoat?

Are you a bit upset by something?

I just pointed out that young Ollie seemed like a lovely woke young man, doing good work in the community, and I'm not sure he'd be one of the posters in the right-wing echo chamber of the Herald Sun.

I think you'll find that stems from the Samantha Murphy alleged murder by a young local footballer Patrick Oren Stephenson son of former AFL ruck Oren Stephenson known to many of the local football fraternity in Ballarat. Samantha's body has still not been found and he's not co-operating with Police to reveal the location. Court case currently in recess I think.

You're entitled to your opinion just as they are.

Of course, but facts are facts. If you look at most of the people who take the 'keep this stuff out of football', are all cut from the same cloth.

Sam Newman is someone who trotted out the 'we don't need this stuff in football' and yet at the same time is happy to make sexist/homophobic jokes.

I'm not being sarcastic about Ollie - he genuinely sounds like a fantastic young lad

You can't say "facts are facts" and then back it up with an opinion. I mean you can but it devalues what you are trying to say.

Seems like he's just listed a bunch of stuff he personally doesn't like and claimed (with no evidence) that a "majority of fans" agree and it's "turning fans against one another"

Given his past book on the AFL I was expecting some sort of evidence/inside scoop showing these things were causing a genuine decline in the popularity of AFL
Nah I agree with everything listed. The AFL should never be in the woke business. Fine to have a pride round and multi cultural round etc but to suspend players and umpires for maybe....potentially upsetting the one person who may feign being offended on behalf of someone else. It's insane and I'm glad people are calling out the AFL for this pathetic and tired stance.
