Curious about the Hawkers reference. Lol
I’m sure you remember the article about Port’s “bizarre” guidelines last year. It really bugged me because these have existed for years and everyone has them. Here’s the article FWIW: https://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/af...r/news-story/ce9ed21dd0385ed2923d4daf3ea86cae
Every club has names they are to be referred to by, its only when an incorrect one is common or could creat confusion that it is explicitly stated. Here is each club’s official designation.
Adelaide: The official designation for the club is ‘Adelaide Football Club’ or ‘Adelaide Crows’.
Brisbane: The official designation for the club is ‘Brisbane Lions’.
(Surprised Brisbane don’t state some names here tbh)
Carlton: The official designation for the club is ‘Carlton Football Club’ or ‘Carlton’.
Collingwood: The official designation for the club is ‘Collingwood Football Club’ or ‘Collingwood’.
Please note: under no circumstances should the club be referred to as ‘Maggies’.
(I assume this may have something to do with Port Adelaide)
Essendon: The official designation for the club is ‘Essendon Football Club’ or ‘Essendon’.
Please note: under no circumstances should the club be referred to as ‘The Bombers’ or ‘Bombers’ or ‘Dons’.
(Probably due to the Bali bombings, little me thought the Bali Bombers were a football club)
Fremantle: The official designation for the club is ‘Fremantle Football Club’, ‘Fremantle Dockers’ or 'Freo Dockers'
'Freo' can be used where space is limited.
Please note: under no circumstances should the club be referred to as ‘Dockers’ on its own.
(A little surprised that Freo is allowed to be used, the Dockers thing probably stems from the Levi’s thing)
Geelong: The official designation for the club is ‘Geelong Cats’. The club is only to be referred to as ‘Geelong Football Club’ when talking retrospectively.
Please note: under no circumstances should the club be referred to as ‘GFC’, ‘Geelong Cats Football Club’ or the ‘Catters’.
(This one is kinda specific which is why I thought it had something to do with the financial crisis but I think we deduced it wasn’t that.)
Gold Coast: The official designation for the club in order of priority is:
1 Gold Coast SUNS
2 GC SUNS
Please note under no circumstances should the club be referred to ‘The SUNS’, ‘GCFC SUNS, ‘GC17’ or ‘the Sons’
(Lol at the Sons, I find GC17 being there interesting, I guess we’ll never get to see a TAC/VFL heritage jumper then.)
GWS: The official designation for the club is ‘GWS GIANTS’.
(For whatever reason Gold Coast state not to be called GC17 but Team GWS is nowhere to be found here.)
Hawthorn: The official designation for the club is ‘Hawthorn Football Club’ or ‘Hawthorn’.
Please note: under no circumstances should the club be referred to as ‘Hawkers’.
(Probably distancing themselves from the negative connotations associated with hawking, I thought it had something to do with the Hawks when I saw a street sign that said no hawking lol.)
Melbourne: The official designation for the club is ‘Melbourne Football Club’ or ‘Melbourne’.
(Although there’s no mention, the lack of denouncing the Demons name surprises me a little.)
North Melbourne: The official designation for the club is ‘North Melbourne Football Club’ or ‘North Melbourne’.
Port Adelaide: The official designation for the club is the ‘Port Adelaide Football Club’ or ‘Port Adelaide’. The official Club nickname is the ‘POWER’.
Please note: under no circumstances should the club be referred to as ‘Port’ or ‘PORT POWER’ or ‘THE POWER’ although the club can be referred to as ‘the POWER’.
(I for one am very glad we’ve denounced the Port Power name.)
Richmond: The official designation for the club is 'Richmond' or 'Richmond Football Club'.
St. Kilda: The official designation for the club is ‘St Kilda Football Club’ or ‘St Kilda’.
Please note: under no circumstances should the club be referred to as ‘St Kilda Sainters’ or ‘Saints Football Club’
or ‘St Kilda Saints’ or ‘St. Kilda’ (there should be no full stop after St) or ‘Sainters’.
(Interesting that they don’t allow the full stop after St yet it’s part of their logo. Baffling.)
Sydney: The official designation for the club is ‘Sydney Swans’.
Please note: under no circumstances should the club be referred to as ‘Sydney Swans FC’ or ‘Sydney FC’ or ‘Sydney’ or ‘Sydney Australian Football Club’ or ‘SMFC’ or ‘Swannies’ or ‘Swans’.
(The Sydney FC one is obvious. I know they’re not in South Melbourne anymore but they have SMFC on the jumpers so why it’s here is odd.)
West Coast: The official designation for the club is ‘West Coast Eagles’.
Please note: under no circumstances should the club be referred to as ‘West Coast’ or ‘Eagles’ or ‘WCE’.
(No mention of West Coast Football Club is surprising but that just sound weird. Navy is still an official club colour too.)
Western Bulldogs: The official designation for the club is ‘Western Bulldogs’.
Please note: under no circumstances should the club be referred to as ‘Doggies’.

Very surprised at the amount of teams distancing themselves from the “Football Club” suffix, also you’ll notice I broke a few of these in the bolded parts cause some of these are dumb, others make sense but yeah.

I wonder if we can get "the West Coast" added to this? Yeah, I'm looking at you Dwayne Russell.

....I don't mind when he says that, as it implies that the entirety of the West coast of the nation is pulling behind the Eagles.....as they should do :smirk:

As a Geelong supporter I announce:

From this moment forward, at all times I shall refer to the Hawthorn Football club as the "Hawkers"

If we get a partnership with Hawkers brewery for their beer at home games i'll happily call us the Hawthorn Hawkers from this day onwards.

Some of those "no-no's" literally make no sense as they've been nicknames and monikers for those clubs for years - especially the Essendon ones.

Interesting that Gold Coast actually advocate for the capitalisation of SUNS.

Anyways, thankyou for posting that, very interesting!

Isn't that list for manufacturing and merchandising?

As in its fine to refer to Essendon as the Bombers, but if Sekem were to make a typical AFL generic scarf or hoodie, then they look at this list and put Essendon on it?

Seems to be more for media in articles.
Not "THE POWER" but "the POWER". ok then.
To be fair, even though capitalising Power is dumb, I’m not sure who is capitalising “THE” when they say the power.

I can't help but call them both

Which document are you quoting this from? I have their Interim Style Guide 2018 and it says:

This was from the AFL Brandzone page for the Eagles, probably a 2020 version but could be 2019.
