AFL Autopsy Loss to the Hawkes

Did someone not tell Reid AFL is a bit quicker than Leongatha seconds.
Awareness and reaction time of Forrest Gump.
I’m willing to give him a pass, the guy has played minimal football the last few years. I expect him to get up to speed.

Explain to me the logic of playing an inside mid out of position forward while having a perfectly capable forward sitting as sub?

A coach that's getting paid close to a million dollars should know the answer to this?
5 tackles inside 50 says he got the pressure side right. The kicking eduction was the issue. He made a difference all night. Just nursed the few chances he had by foot.
The forward line has been screaming for blokes who can put pressure on as a non negotiable.
If someone else steps up and does it better then replace him.
The reason he gets a game is he ticks all the non negotiable stuff. It is not totally ideal but until someone else does it then it is what it is.
Not like Gresham had shot the lights out this pre season. Maybe sub suited him.
Things will change as they change the list.

I thought the Gresham sub move was a mistake. We needed a second small forward to balance out the forward line.
The look of the forward line in the second half was much better. Thought it was obvious to start Roberts or Hobbs as the sub to be honest.

Jones impressed me on the wing. Considering I really wasn't too convinced by that move but even in greasy conditions he started to clunk them as the game went on.

Kako was a livewire and I'm absolutely certain he'll be a great player for us.

Caldwell may be showing he's got another level in him. We'll see if he can become a genuine A grader rather than just a good B grader.

Tsatas started off really poorly - no sugar coating it but 15 touches in the second half was impressive.

Draper promised so much but delivered an average game. Kind of par for the course with Draper (although he does look fitter than before). Would be good if he didn't bomb for goal every time he gets it within 60m.

Nice to see Reid get through a full game. He had some moments that were poor but definitely not going to judge him until he gets an extended run at it. Has just missed so much football. He also did some good things too, his reach is pretty impressive.

Caddy tried hard but the deck was really stacked against him with all their experienced key defenders and our ball use was pretty poor.

Merrett was the absolute class he always is. Shame the team around him isn't better.

Lack of skills and smarts are going to plague this team all season. So many missed opportunities to hit up free players but too many players lack the vision and awareness to spot opportunities, or the skills to execute.

Would not question the effort. That's what kept the team in it so long despite it looking like it could really blow out at quarter time. Though I do think our defence lacks anyone with real intensity and mongrel. Need to find a Vlaustin type. Too many 'nice' players back there.

He had a howler for sure, not sure the match ups did him any favours at times. I’d give him another go to see how he bounces back. We need to see more than one game from him.

Adelaide like Hawthorn also have a similar profile of speedy small forwards. We can’t afford to give him another go next week.

closest is Redman - should be moved back this week v Adelaide

It'll be interesting to see what we do with him. New player, round 1, one bad game, did enough to get selected in the first place, blah blah...
If we are serious about standards and accountability then he has to be dropped. Not as a 'never to be seen again', but as a 'there are minimum standards and even if it's an anomaly, that kind of performance gets you demoted until you show us otherwise'.
Would love to see that from Scott. Clear messaging internally and to the fans. Not shitting on the guy, but framing it that its a coachable thing and he'll be a long term contributor to the club.

Something along the lines of "a couple of times he didn't go as hard as we expect from all of our players. This is not how he normally plays, so when he's killing it in the VFL, he'll get a chance to show what he's really capable of in the AFL"

Just having a third look at the first half. For me the coaches clearly stuffed up by not matching their back half and allowing a free player at the back. Amon ended up being that guy more often than not and his kicking was sublime.

Wasn’t that bad of a performance imo, thought we gave up a lot of easy goals from the back half with shitty defending. They were definitely slicker, unsure if that’s the difference with having 1 extra game played. Not having a decent 2nd tall will hurt us.

Would give 3 votes to Moore, 2 to Caldwell and 1 to Amon that game.

Mitchell said himself that Caldwell was best player on the ground will be interesting to see if he gives him the 5 coaches votes.

He won't, he's two-faced Sam Mitchell.

Thought it wasn’t a disaster, we started well in the first 10 minutes then just let them get a run on. After quarter time managed to keep the game tight with no real runs of goals conceded, won the clearance game, and kept the effort up right through.

We lacked some maturity and class, our forward line is relying on two talented teenagers to kick goals, and our defence is a bit patchwork atm.

Langford and Ridley going down is disappointing but an opportunity for some younger blokes (hopefully) to get some early games.

There are regulations, have been for nearly 2 decades I reckon. No metal studs, must be molded with a max certain length. Don't ask me what it is but pretty much everyone who plays AFL has that length.
Yeah, realise screw ins, studs etc are now banned but there must be different molds for dry vs wet etc. otherwise the game would be unwatchable when it gets slippery. Obviously Hawks players had different boots to us as they hardly slipped.

It’s an important building year for us. I’m not to worried with that result early. Shows some signs. Hope they bring in Edwards and SEH. The back line has gotten worse. No one willing to take the game on. Someone at the club really needs to sit them down and show em what the best sides do out of the back half.
Get them to watch Wanganeen in '93
