Let's talk Ports! Part 3

PORT Adelaide's Michael Regan has emerged as a frontrunner for the Western Bulldogs' list strategy role.

The Dogs have changed their list and recruiting department in the off-season, with list boss Sam Power being appointed football manager at the club. Power will retain control of contracts and some list management duties in the position.

Regan has been at the club for a decade. Burgo pinched him from Catapult, pretty sure it was in 2014.

Gave a good chat about what he does and data analysts do at the 2018 Members Convention. Also showed a humorous video of Charles Barkley going off at the analytics and calling it crap.

EDIT - even have a thread about his appointment in December 2014

Looking at our first 11 games. I'd be happy to walk out with 7-4

Win the games we're capable of winning. Rock up against the cocky Hawks with a win and then build on confidence.

We could be 4-7 just as easy.

We could be 1 and 10 if you want to be doom and gloom
And 10-1… But you chose 7-4. Why? For the same reason I picked 4-7.

We’ve just set a range based on most probable outcomes. In other words:

B, 7-4
C+, 6-5
C-, 5-6
D, 4-7

Everything below 4-7 is “F”; above 7-4, “A”.

Definitely both have played that game & it's not appreciated. It has really irked me that our hierarchy since Bucky left have never stood their ground against the Afl despite the wonderful history of our club. Unfortunately in this world if you tolerate being treated like shit then that's what you'll get.

We could have been doing better, even for our own standards. For instance, I do not understand why we deliberately forget 4 of our 5 national championships.

I know why the AFL doesn’t count the 20 national titles outside the VFL/AFL history. It’s dumb, but at least its consistent of the league’s self-understanding.

We own 4 of those 20. We should count them properly. We have 5 national titles and 36 state titles. AFL Vic-centrism be damned.

Victorians earned the right to have their state championships becoming national. That’s fine. It is what it is. Still, that doesn’t mean we should accept our old national titles to be disregarded.

Damning stats for us are our Groundball get stats for the past few years and hence why many in the industry have seriously ruled us out of premiership contention , even with our high finishes in the minor rd. We have always in recent years seriously sucked in this key indicator and this year we are worse. The game is won at groundlevel and we havent improved for many years. Personnel / training and coaching need major review.
  • Groundball Get:
This is the overall term for gaining possession of the ball at ground level after a contest.

  • Hardball Get:
These are possessions gained under direct physical pressure, often described as the "true coalface of football matches".

  • Looseball Get:
These are possessions won at ground level after a marking contest or when the ball is loose.

Our contested game in all facets is ****ing appalling - and has been for some time. Daniel Hoyne pointed out last year why Port were most likely going to bomb out in finals due to our poor contested game (or 'chaos game' vs 'control game' as he framed the narrative)

Looking at contested possession differentials over the past few years:
2025 - 16th (-10.3)
2024 - 15th (-3.0)
2023 - 16th (-4.4)

Groundball gets:
2025 - 17th (-9.8 per game)
2024 - 13th (-3.8)
2023 - 11th (1.1)

Hardball gets:
2025 - 11th (-0.5)
2024 - 17th (-2.1)
2023 - 4th(!!!) (+2.1)

Looseball gets:
2025 - 17th (-9.3)
2024 - 9th (-1.7)
2023 - 14th (-0.9)

Post clearance contested possessions:
2025 - 18th (-10.5!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
2024 - 16th (-4.5)
2023 - 16th (-2.2)

Crumbs:
2025 - 18th (-4.0)
2024 - 17th (-1.9)
2023 - 10th (+0.3)

The only reason why we have been doing quite well in clearances the last few years is we've lead the comp in HO gathers. So basically our mids get the ball from a HO on the run and clear it or we're ****ed. Serious questions to Josh Carr on all this.

I was looking at those stats this morning too. Depressing.

I thought it was interesting that we're AFL average for score from turnover, but well below for score from stoppage and from kick-in.

I wish they would split out score from free kicks as well, I assume that gets wrapped into turnover.

Everyone knows this which is the stupid thing. Yet we never do anything about it. The midfield mix is way off and whoever teaches us contested techniques is also piss at their job.

Surely they must be aware of this, but what ever they are doing to correct it isnt working. Its such a basic element of the game and low hanging fruit for the group to focus on and improve on for the rest of the year and into the preseason. You cant just turn it around , but if the season is a write off these small gains, should what we should be focussing on for the future. A 5 percent improvement could be worth a couple of games , and should be obtainable with added focus. Also it probably highlights what we need to prioritise recruiting / drafting wise, ie guys that are good at ground level ideally under pressure especially.

they have deliberately reversed everything Port was traditionally known for - ruckmen, talls, contested possession, skills, training, and of course winning
