Jackson Trengove was at SPP's wedding in Bali. Their time at Port only overlapped by a season, that must have been some connection.

Should have left him in defence and he might even still be there. He certainly would have been there over the 2020/21 period where we were good but undersized.

Dumb list management to give him away for nothing.

Bit of rose coloured glasses given the good guy factor I think. Realistically he was slow, wasn't a marking threat, was zero threat offensively, and was only decent in one on one contests. I don't think he would have been a better option than Jonas and McKenzie in 2020/21
 
We moved him from defence to attack because he had to play as forward/second ruck, which was stupid, no reason he couldn't have played as backman/second ruck?

My memory’s a little hazy after so long, but I’m confident he was a regular at the brothers’ dinners.

Jonas McKenzie and Clurey in 2020 though.

I think he was an very good defender right up until we borrowed him for the ruck in 2016. He's a John Cahill Medalist. He wasn't any slower than Jonas, and I think he could absolutely hold a mark it just wasn't really how we played when he was in defence. I think he was quite an intelligent defender and was a general for us in defence. We switched to the intercept marking style while he was being utilised out of position and then with the rise of Hombsch and Howard we decided we didn't need him. I think that was a mistake longer term.

We moved him from defence to ruck to attack because we elected to delist Butcher at the same time as Schulz retired because his body was cooked, leaving us with Dixon and fresh draftee Marshall, Brett Eddy from the SANFL and Howard who we had decided to play as a defender.

Butcher would have been a better choice as a key forward and should have been given an extra year to bridge the gap between Schulz and Marshall. The final in a disgraceful string of decisions regarding how we managed Butch.

Keep Butch on the list, move Trengove back to defence, we're a better side in 2017.

Max James was a star for Port Adelaide and South Melbourne, before son Heath followed in his footsteps to the Sydney Swans. But this family’s relationship with footy will never be the same.

From that article, it explains why Heath didn't choose Port. In 1998 the Father-Son qualification was 50 V/AFL games.

Max due to injuries only played 54 in 5 seasons for the swans and returned to Port in 1982 as the swans moved lock stock and barrel to Sydney after 1981 season, and I reckon Max returned home in that 30 June transfer window after playing a few games based in Sydney.

Heath was taken pick #28 in 1998 draft when a club had to give up a 2nd round pick, which later became a 3rd round pick for a son of qualified father.

Heath like Max got lots of injuries and his injuries affecting his life is what the article is mainly about. During his career, he managed to play just 18 of a possible 162 games in 7 seasons with the Swans 1999–2005, which included the last 2 years being cut twice and then re-rookied.


James grew up in Mildura before heading to Adelaide to live with his dad and play with Port Adelaide in the SANFL. When AFL recruiters came calling, he had the choice of the Power or the Swans, but made the pragmatic decision at the time. “The only reason I chose Sydney was because they were grooming me to take over from Andrew Dunkley. And Port had all these guns and it would’ve been really hard to get a game,” James recalled. “So it was just selfish reasons – I just wanted to go somewhere where I could get a game!”
 
I know I'm stretching the rules but this story just sums up Heath James' injuries at the swans over 7 years.


James’ final year at the Swans was 2005, and his final moment in red and white was celebrating Sydney’s 72 year drought breaking premiership with his mates. But even that was a calamity waiting to happen.
“I was one of the only players to actually get injured, and I didn’t even play!“I jumped the fence and tore my pants on the fence as I jumped over and then one of the security guys got me in a headlock as I was trying to get my badge out,” he remembers with a laugh. But it was Leo Barry, fresh off his historic match saving mark, who did the damage. “I see Leo, and I was best man at his wedding so we were really close and we run and hit each other and I do my AC joint so I was walking around after the game with ice on my shoulder and I didn’t even play!” A fitting end to a footy career cruelly ended by constant injuries.

you can excuse butters who was playing with a broken collarbone and got subbed vs geelong.

JHF was on one leg two with his back and hamstring

Absolutely.

It's all well and good for many blindly adoring fans to ignore the clear trend of his ongoing performances, but at some point a coaching group should be seeing it and doing something about it.

We're not winning anything with Rozee as a mid we're reliant on.

I understand why this board gives JHF a pass- because he's so young. But I don't understand why Rozee cops so much more heat than Butters.

In their last 5 finals games, Rozee has averaged 0.2 less disposals, more contested possessions, more clearances, and has kicked 5 goals to Butters' 0.

Ignoring the Geelong game, where Butters was subbed out, their stats are closer but Rozee still averages more contested possessions and clearances and of course hits the scoreboard.

He also has, by far, the best individual finals performance of the three in his game against Brisbane at the Gabba in 2023.

I'm not trying to gaslight anyone into thinking that Rozee's performances in finals this year were good, or even passable. But neither were the performances of any of our other midfielders.

All I'm trying to say is that maybe the issue is a bit more systemic (Hinkley) than "Rozee isn't a midfielder."

I think too that if our mids saw more return on investment from their forwards their games would elevate through sheer momentum and confidence. Seriously it must have been soul-destroying deploying the ball in the finals into the black hole forward line of cooked Dixon, can't kick a goal Esava (who did at least compete relentlessly), and the triumvirate of terror - McEntee/FEvans/Narkle. If Georgie and Rioli didn't kick goals it was goodnight nurse. Plus they lost their wider outlets of Houston and Farrell.

Just curious.

How many of those 20 tackles were effective ie. how many:
1. caused a turnover,
2. got a HTB decision, or
3. forced a disposal that had to be changed from the oppo's original plan, and threw their attacking strategy off?

Lots of tackles get recorded, but a lot are ineffective.

You couldn't pay me to go back and re-watch our finals games this year, especially the Geelong game. But I'm pretty sure Champion Data only records tackles that lead to ineffectual disposals, turnovers or lock the ball in.

So, all of them?

All tackles that result in the ball being disposed of to a teammate aren't recorded as tackles, by nature tackles force either a throw up, HTB, Turnover or the ball to hit the ground.
