Don't normally bother with reviews but ocassionally watch ACG for his word play. His review of this is really good and it looks like even more variation in play styles compared to the first game. in KCD1 I usually gravitated towards some sort of heavy knight combat build but it was definitely a pain sometimes with gear having to organise the padded layers and stuff. I think this time I might see if I can lean into a bit more personality and keep my combat skills more nimble.

do i need to play the first or is this a new story?

i never got around to the original and if this is an improved version i'd prefer to jump straight into this one. initial review scores look promising

The story begins only days after the events of the first game. You play as the same character but it apparently has a pretty decent intro to recap the story.

might just jump on youtube and find a detailed recap.. find normally the game included ones pretty lacking. fine for if you played the first but lacking a fair bit of context if youre coming in new. cheers

In what way? I'm curious
Well this is the main quote that I noticed (PC Gamer site):

But even better, it's a world that's happy to let you cheat your way to the top. It obeys its own rules to your detriment and your advantage. Seen an impossibly expensive set of armour in a shop? KCD2 will let you break in after dark and pull it right out of the storekeep's stockroom (just don't wear it in front of him). Want to take advantage of every skill-trainer on the map to buff up your skills way ahead of the endgame? The money you pay for their training goes right into their eminently pickpocketable inventory. It's a game that usually answers the question 'Wait, couldn't I just…?' with a resounding 'Yes, absolutely.'

And then, if you're like me, you spend about five hours robbing a single castle of all its incredibly valuable loot, armour, weapons, and clothing. It has no problem letting you feel like you've gotten one over on it. In other words, it reminded me of Morrowind, the highest compliment I can give a videogame.

But even before reading that I was thinking parts of what I was reading were reminding me of Morrowind. Extremely free form, not all that forgiving of player mistakes and not too hand holdy, combat that isn't the norm amongst its contemporaries. A sandbox sort of RPG with a story entwined.

That said, I'm yet to play it (will be tonight!) so it may seem very different to all that to me.

I guess I'll have to give it a go again.

I played the first one for some hours but found the game a bit too clunky to continue with it.

Also the first time I played it was last year so I suppose maybe I came late. If the graphics are updated for KCD2, then that will be a nice change.

It's quite rare that someone uses Morrowind as a reference point, for me the only really great elder scrolls game.

--------

I'm tempted to give this a go but I also have just installed Spiderman 2. And I haven't even got to Stalker 2 yet.

Fair, I haven't even played the first KCD so who knows how I'll find the controls. But for sure Morrowind was peak Elder Scrolls for me too, Oblivion was a close second but to be honest my experience with that was heavily modded, to tweak the UI especially to de-console-ify it.

On this one though, supposedly its meant to be a bit less clunky than the first.

Yeah performs real nicely. Seeing a lot of comments how well optimised it is and i have to agree, seems pretty solid overall for a just launched game. Quite refreshing in this day and age.

Goes to show you dont have to necessarily use the latest and greatest tech (its the Cryengine I believe?) but still make a good looking game and they obviously went with what they knew, which likely helped.

Yep it's Cryengine, they chose to stick with it and it's optimised really well considering the amount of foliage and stuff there is.

Now if I could just find some belladonna...this really throws you into the deep end after the lengthy intro.

I think my first point of call will be

As much as I want to find Mutt and do some side quests to make early money I think I need a job so I can at least have somewhere to sleep. Heading straight for the blacksmith

Just booted up the first one, had it in my library for years but after playing the ~2 hour intro last night I think I might finally be hooked.

How many hours is the first one? Keen to roll onto this one straight after, reviews are very promising.

You can probably run the story in 30-40 hours, maybe quicker if you're just rushing to get to the sequel. Main story without rushing and a chunk of side quests as you go expect 50-60 hours. It's the type of game where a typical playthrough would be 80-100 hours.

Ok cool, not planning to rush it, good to know. Similar to Witcher 3 from the sounds of it

In the first game I modded it so I didn't need to use schnapps to save, but that was partly because it was prone to crashing and just became used to it so I always applied that mod. This time playing as intended I forgot how brutal the saving can be. I couldn't find much belladonna for a while and was too poor to buy schnapps so I was just winging it and relying on auto save. Then I got killed by a bandit and reckon I went back about 20 minutes and a quest step. So I just spent an hour picking herbs and brewing schnapps. That's pretty much all I've done so far.... brew potions and craft horseshoes. It's an immersive sim, I'll get on with it later.

I love how much they've hidden that isn't a map marker. I ran passed a messenger and there was nothing telling me he was important. He was acting frazzled so I just talked to him and it turns out he dropped a letter. What I thought was funny was when Henry asked him what was in the letter he said something like "I don't know, it was private... and I don't know how to read" and I actually lol'd IRL because they use that dumb accent. I think he was just there as a rep booster rather than any sort of quest because I failed the speech check and he ran off.

He got me to punch him in the face so he could make out to his masters that he was robbed and lost the letter lol. But yeah not sure anything comes of it with him in any case.

On the save system, yeah it can be brutal. Especially when someone like me was admittedly save scumming pretty heavily in any game that has a quick save button, like in Stalker 2. When I say save scumming I don't necessarily mean re-doing things/choices to get a better outcome. but before any battles etc.

But, yeah it does force you to plan more so definitely boosts the immersion more.
