Past Justin Sherman (2005-2010)

Haven't we already traded a player to the Bulldogs who had an inflated idea of their ability? Someone who thought that their personal opinions on where they should play and how the coach should coach were more important than the team?

The Sydney Swans initially showed very strong interest in Justin, but withdrew from the race on Saturday due to concerns about his reluctance to join them. The Western Bulldogs’ offer of their compensation pick (received for Jarrod Harbrow) was the best offer they could make given their first two selections were taken with Father/Son selections. Meanwhile, Richmond’s offer of a second round pick was inferior to that of the Bulldogs.

With Aker still burning from being sacked by the Dogs, along with his personal dislike of Sherman, I wouldn't be surprised if he threw in a few hand grenades.

Sherman's manager Liam Pickering said the player had only wanted to go to the `Dogs. "He was really keen to get to Melbourne, (he's a) Tassie boy and he's done the travelling for four years, every second weekend," Pickering said.
"He's pretty keen to play in Melbourne, that's been the driving factor for him.
"There was obviously interest from Richmond early on as well.
"I've had a few text messages from Justin, he's been on edge a bit, but it's all good."

Rob Kerr stated there also needed to be more alignment between a players' performance and their worth. That comment could be seen as a veiled swipe at midfield/forward Justin Sherman who was traded to the Western Bulldogs despite having two years to run on his contract.
Sherman was reported to be receiving $400,000 a season, yet in his six seasons with the Lions he had only two top 10 finishes in the club championship.

Jesus! Sherman is one over payed guy! $400,000 yearly! I know he is good, but not THAT good!

Note that is a backended payment from a contract of $900,000 over 3 years.

Sherman isn't tough enough to play in the middle. His one arm soft tackles are woeful, he doesn't win his own ball, nor show any want to go in and get it. Why the does he think he deserve to be in there. He is also useless and disposing of the ball to clear contests. His only strength is using his speed, running past and recieving.

Can't wait to see some doggies games next year to see Rocket giving him a spray at the breaks. Brian Lake is probably jumping for joy knowing Rocket is going to have a new whipping boy.

Glad to see that this trade has left everybody very happy.

Ohh I see what you are saying granny. Voss instructed Sherman to butcher the ball when it was passed to him, he was instructed not to go in for the contest when the ball was there to be won, to kick behinds instead of goals, to handball to a stationary player or a player who is about to be tackled, to kick hospital balls to his fellow teammates, not to run to space, to run in to congested situations etc... etc...etc...

I can just hear Vossey's booming voice across the ground as he delivers his instruction to Shermo at quarter time. "You imbecile Sherman, you were meant to kick it out of bounds on the full you fool, not between the sticks. Can’t you get it into your head Go Out There And Play Dumb Football Shermo"

Re: Justin Sherman

i will be watching dogs games with interest next season, with eagleton gone, there is a gap in the 21 for an outside player who is not team orientated.

wow - its interesting that he seems to be blaming his inconsistency on the lions rather than accept any responsibility for it himself. We'll have to wait and see but I don't think comments like that and also complaining that he had to play a couple of different positions (????) is going to endear him to Rocket. also manages to call himself a "great" footy player

"The main thing was I've been a bit inconsistent, having good years and having mediocre years," Sherman said on Wednesday.

"I could no longer live that roller-coaster lifestyle.

"I wanted to make sure that going ahead that I could continue to be a great footy player and to be that I need to be in the right culture and get continuity of one position.

"I was getting thrown into different positions. To be a good player, you need to play in the one position and play it really well and know your role every week.

"Here I'm going to be provided with that.

"Last year (2010 season) was a bit up and down with our culture, with a few things that happened."

I liked this:

"This year the Lions were a bit up and down with our culture with a few things that happened, but at the end of the day I had to make sure I played instinctive footy when I had all of these mixed messages that were coming in," he said.

The overall message was he has no real idea how to play a role in a team. Cannot adapt to a change in game plan. Cannot understand anything remotely complicated game plan wise. I am too good to do the things others have to do even if my play doesn't warrant me being given freedom. I don't like to be told I am playing crap.

Thought this was interesting

"I know I'm determined and one thing I can say is I've had inconsistency back there, but that won't happen here because I've got better players around me. The team is too good for that sort of thing to happen with the way the coaches structure the team and the way they want it to play."

Nice backhand to your mates (will fit right in at the dogs)

I have never been in such an exalted position as to have myself quoted in print. However, I think that journos are masters at quoting people out of context.

I don't read anything wrong with the comments that Sherman made: I had an inconsistent year, I do not believe that the role that I was asked to play was within my personal strengths, the culture at the Lions this year was unsettled by controversy and I probably need the change in environment and role to help me get back to my best, which I played in 2009.

Nothing wrong with any of those statements. The fact that the journo picks up on one thing and then headlines it "Sherman takes swipe at Lions" is a textbook example of the gutter press at work.

Hope you don't mind me intruding guys, but I agree with this 100 per cent.

Journalists are the kings at taking a comment and twisting it into something it's not - it's what sells.

No wonder so many people hate them.

I hope he means collectively because the Dogs don't exactly have legends of the game such as Brown, Black and Power that are better...although I am not saying they do not have class players.

I can't wait for us to play the Dogs next year, he will be shitting himself and as usual go missing when the physicality sets in...fairy!

INDIVIDUALS
Whether you are a coach of a team of athletes at any level, or a leader of a business team, you must get to know the different personalities of your charges. You must respect the individual.

It is a risky situation to assume that everyone in a group will perform and respond in the same way to any situation.
