Re: Justin Sherman

So if he has a contract and the club refuses to trade can he go? Is does he have to stay?

For any trade to eventuate, it must be agreed to by both clubs and the player.

Brisbane Lions line-breaker Justin Sherman is another who appears to be on the move and possibly bound for the Western Bulldogs. The acquisition of Sherman would be a major boost for the Dogs following the departure of speedy backman Jarrod Harbrow to Gold Coast.
The Dogs are in the market for some pace and skill, Sherman's line-breaking drive off half-back seen as helping reinvigorate the club's flag hopes.
Sherman, 23, is likely to be forced out of Brisbane due to the club's salary cap crisis.
Carlton could also be in the hunt for Sherman if it can free up some cash.

Re: Justin Sherman

Since when was Shermo known for breaking the lines from HB? More ignorant mexican shit.
i thought he was quite skilled at a run and carry, but then he would give a hospital handball.
2009 he was hitting targets by foot, but then his role changed.
another player poorly coached in my opinion.

Sherman hitting targets by foot? I think you have your rose coloured glasses. Last year was the same as this except he got more of the ball and carried it better.

Re: Justin Sherman

Yeah, there is something about Pickering that suggests to me that he has a dislike for the Lions. Not sure what it is, but I just get that feeling.... (perhaps I've heard him make some fairly scathing criticisms of the Lions?).

I get the feeling that some agents indulge in the financial equivalent of 'churning' just to generate extra commission, with little regard for their clients.

I'm guessing the thinking here is that he might be Harbrow's replacement. Completely different player though.

2009 Review

2010 End of Season Review

Games - 17
Best and Fairest - 15 votes (19th)
Dreamteam - 1103 points; $235,500 (-$143,200)
Supercoach - 1049 points; $255,000 (-$228,300)

Down and Out

After a rejuvenated 2009, expectations on Justin Sherman were high. In his 6th season, and having played 98 games it was hoped that his career would be reaching its peak, and that he now had the maturity to be relied on for consistent performances. Things started well enough. He was one of the better performers during the preseason games and this form continued into the season proper. In round 3 he played game 100, and in what turned out to be his best game for the year, gathered 20 possessions and kicked 4 goals.

In round 4 Sherman sustained a corked thigh which caused him to miss rounds 5 and 6. This coincided with the previously undefeated Lions looking flat, and it was thought Sherman’s energy and explosiveness were sorely missed. But when he returned he wasn’t really able to provide that spark that he is capable of. As one of the senior 2nd tier players there were expectations that he would be one to step up in support of Black and Power in the midfield. But with a long succession of losses it may have become too much for him. He looked lethargic and was becoming content to let others win the ball for him. In the 2nd half of the season he was becoming a liability. The coaching staff gave him a long run to regain some form, but his confidence continued to decline. It was becoming hard to imagine him playing well and he was finally dropped towards the end of the season.

At season’s end, with the Brisbane Lions suffering from salary cap pressure, it looks like Sherman will be heading to another club. If he goes he could be a good pick up if used correctly, and a bad one if he isn’t. He is arguably the worst handballer in the league. He panics in congestion, treating the ball like a hot potato, and notoriously sells his team mates into trouble. He has good goal sense. There was a time when he was criticised for having blinkers on, but generally you want your goal kickers to back themselves. He is quick and can find space. He will provide plenty of run (he generally leads the club in bounces) and has performed at both ends of the ground. He is not one who relishes the physicality of the game, and does not use his big frame to advantage. The biggest issue though is his history of wild swings in form, due to a perceived mental fragility

...the Lions will enter trade week with Justin Sherman the senior player most likely to find a new club.

The Bulldogs would consider on-trading the first-round pick they received in compensation for losing speedy defender Jarrod Harbrow to the Coast, while Richmond are another club showing strong interest.

Re: Justin Sherman

Swans make $1.6m move on Sherman

THE future of contracted Brisbane midfielder Justin Sherman hangs in the balance following a massive four-year $1.6 million offer from Sydney.

The offer is far in excess of what Richmond has put in front of the disenchanted Lions runner, who told the Tigers they were his preference and that he had no plans to live in Sydney.

Sherman, who was recruited from Tasmania, is also being wooed by the Western Bulldogs.

In the same management stable as Gary Ablett -- IMG's Liam Pickering -- Sherman's requirement to at least one of his Melbourne-based suitors is a three-year contract at $375,000 a season.

Speaking from the NAB AFL Draft Combine, Fantasia said the Dogs hoped to be active when clubs started getting deals done next week.

They have been linked to a number of smaller, speedy types, including Brisbane Lion Justin Sherman.

"He's a good player and we've certainly spoken to him and his manager and we're going to speak to, Brisbane, but that's early days as well," Fantasia said.

"But we've made an indication that he's the type of player that we'd love to bring into our footy club."

The Bulldogs and Sydney are interested in Brisbane's Justin Sherman. The Dogs are prepared to offer the compensation pick they received for the loss of Jarrod Harbrow as part of the deal and offer Sherman a three-year contract. Sydney, however, is understood to be prepared to offer a four-year deal, but the trade terms were uncertain.

Lion Justin Sherman is understood to prefer a move to the Western Bulldogs, despite being tempted by an offer from the Swans.

Fantasia also confirmed the Dogs, who have a small forward and a young key position player on their shopping list, were interested in Brisbane Lions' midfielder Justin Sherman.

"He's a player that's still under contract and that's where clubs get an opportunity to drive that process," he said.

"We're in discussions with Brisbane over a number of players and a fair bit of water needs to go under the bridge on that count."

Re: Justin Sherman

Voss

"Jared Brennan's been talked about so, whether he wants to move we will try and do a deal," Voss told AAP. "To be able to move any trade it has to be realistic to the team he goes to and realistic to what we end up losing.
"He's (Sherman) a required player, very much a required player, but from there it's what unfolds.
"Its more one, realistically we are conceding the fact we have lost one, but to lose both would be a stretch for us."

Re: Justin Sherman

Sherman's manager Liam Pickering said today the speedy midfielder would like to play at Whitten Oval next year if a deal can be arranged.

Link

"I'm pretty confident the Dogs will give up the compensation pick they got for losing Harbrow [to Gold Coast], which I think will fall in at about 29, if they were to use it this year," Pickering added.

"I think that's probably fair, but it's a matter of whether Brisbane want a little more."

Re: Justin Sherman

A comment like the above from Pickering, who others have noted has a healthy disregard for the Lions, is about what you'd expect.

I'll be interested to see how we play these proposed trades- ie, to see whether we've toughened up and become a bit more professional.

Put it this way, if Pickering thinks Sherman is worth Pick 29, then I'd suggest this is basically proof we should be asking for something way better.

All talk, no action. That's how it's been on the opening day of negotiations in AFL Trade Week, but deals involving Freo's Chris Tarrant, Justin Sherman of the Brisbane Lions and Sydney's Patrick Veszpremi may be close to completion. After securing Mitch Wallis and Tom Liberatore as father-son selections earlier in the day, the Western Bulldogs were fairly confident of being able to bring both Sherman and Veszpremi to Whitten Oval next season.

The club's football operations manager, James Fantasia said he enjoyed "robust conversations" with the Lions on Sherman who wants out after 114 games in six seasons with the club. "We're confident that we can certainly work our way through and come up with a deal that will appease Brisbane for sure," Fantasia said.

The Dogs are the frontrunner to recruit Justin Sherman from the Brisbane Lions, in exchange for the compensation pick they received for Jarrod Harbrow's move to the Gold Coast. Advertisement: Story continues below
While Sydney is also interested in the speedy Lion - and are prepared to offer pick 21 and a four-year contract worth up to $400,000 a year - Sherman is determined to get to Whitten Oval, even though the Bulldogs have offered him one less year.
Sherman has two years to run on his contract, but while the Lions are keen to keep him, the club's need to relieve its salary cap leaves the Bulldogs in a strong position to secure him.

John Longmire

"We've spoken to Brisbane and obviously we've got a lower draft pick [than the Dogs]. We really rate Justin. We understand that his first preference is to get to Melbourne, but we still think there's a bit of water to go under the bridge yet."

James Fantasia

"I can't speak for Justin, but he's certainly made it clear that he wants to come to the Western Bulldogs, and I think the selection we're offering up is only seven or eight different [to the one put up by the Swans].

Re: Justin Sherman

I would have thought that not only Sydney's offer but the Tambling deal to the Crows will force the market price up a bit on Sherman.

Plenty of time left in trade week not predicting anything will happen on this until at least Friday.

Re: Justin Sherman

The Bulldogs retain an interest in Walker, but only in the event they cannot secure Brisbane Lions player Justin Sherman in a trade. The Lions at this stage are prepared to trade Sherman only to Sydney, which has offered pick 21 in a trade and a four-year deal with about $400,000 a year to the player. Those terms exceed the Bulldogs' conditions financially and are an improvement on the Jarrod Harbrow compensation pick the Bulldogs were prepared to trade with.
