I dont even think Freo will part with pick 27. They have waning interest at best. Clark approached Freo and not the other way around. Freo Id suggest will have probably walked away from negotiations as they stand given Geelongs wants

Which would please Geelong greatly.

The VFL affiliate yes, I dont think the AFL team would give a rats ass., which essentially is why he is actually going

If him staying at Geelong would please them greatly, he wouldnt want to leave

He wants to leave because he is being offered 4 years and a lot more money..his relationship with Geelong is not the issue.

I expect Clark will play a fair bit of afl next year and i doubt Geelong want to trade him now they will be happy for freo to go away.

His relationship with Geelong is clearly the issue. Id be pissed off if I was him when every year 37 year old geriatrics come in and take your spot and expecting him not to be is a bit naive by the club.

The way Geelong is (not) playing Clark his value is only going to decrease next year.

Considering we would have given you a fairly early first for him last year Geelong has already held him too long.

Doing the same again and not playing him would be a dumb move by the Cats.

Nah. If you want to try to poach our in-contract players with big contracts.....you have to pay a premium to shift a wanted and contracted player.

Scarlett out hopefully means Clark gets back to the half back flank/defensive wing on a weekly basis.

If he plays all 23, injury free and still wants to leave next year do you think he's worth more than currently or still on the decline?

I hope he stays. Kids going to be a gun!

You think his value is a late first / early second? For a player in your reserves? Jesus.

Also your opinion he could have a breakout year and be worth a top ten pick while out of contract is fanciful.
Top 10 pick in a year fanciful sure. Him being best 22 next year with a change of coaches and not asking for a trade at all is much stronger odds

4 year contract offer for someone they have only "waning interest"?

Whatever Trevor

Nah, new defensive line coach next year, a list that has a serious issue with d50 exits, pacey half back kid available. I'd be extremely surprised if he played a single vfl game next year

Thats true but that is negated by the fact that we have 3 R2s already (and are unlikely to want to use a lot of picks this year) so 27 isnt as valuable to us as it would be if we didnt have them. Plus Clark is probably the best player we have outside our current 22 (apart from stewart who was out injured obviously) so with an ageing list he may well play a lot of football next year and be useful in a flag push. Geelong may feel that extra 12 months contribution is worth enough to them to potentially risk getting less in a trade next year (this was essentially the call we made with TK 3 years ago) and/or they may feel that 12 months under a new defensive coach will convince him to stay long term and they may back themselves in to do that.

I'm not being facetious here (and we're all entitled to dream), but I'm fairly certain that ship has sailed. Dad's army has proven itself incapable of keeping up with the pack (Melbourne, the Western Bulldogs, Brisbane etc). I'll happily eat my words if I'm wrong though!

Its always problematic to hang on to a player who cant get a game.
Geelong would be crazy to take unders today, Clark could see the Cats get what they want in one of the bigger/more players deals, that are cobbled together during trading.

A 4 year contract and constantly referring to him and the trade specifically - including the captain in Fyfe, does not indicate 'waning interest.'

How do we actually know for a fact that its 4 years on offer. Lets wait and actually see

Cleary is a Geelong insider - he would know more than most when it comes to any trade update regarding our players. Most likely, because we've leaked it so we can put out our response to said possible trade request

Well that would be in Freos hands to make it happen. Seems at the very least Clark is waiting to see who the new defence coach is

I’d imagine clubs are a tad more proactive in discussions these days. If it comes out that Clark requests a trade, then I’d imagine the clubs would’ve agreed on principle, which would include worth.

I doubt he requests a trade and the sticking point is pick 27 or the hypothetical 20 Geelong want.

If Geelong said 20 then fine. If he hasn’t released formal request it may be because Fremantle won’t budge on pick 27, he may wait to see who new backline coach is or whatever.

Both organisations would be pretty unprofessional if Clark requests trade and then the deal can’t get done over 27 or 20.

The rest is just supporter bases puffing their chests out.

For me? Pick 27 or 25 from Carlton get it done. If Geelong need more we can swap future picks.

Im also one of a handful that is at ease to downgrade a top 10 pick to 2 around the 20s such is the evenness of the draft. One of those could go for Clark and I’d be ok with it.

Honestly I think they're probably stalling for time so they can get him talking to whoever their new backline coach is
