John Winston Howard - what is his legacy?

Very interesting with the release today of the 1999 cabinet papers, showing Howard/Costello and either their callous indifference, blatant favouring of the already well-off, or sheer incompetence in the face of housing affordability issues, which have done nothing but worsen since.

The letters page of tomorrow's SMH (already online) kicks off with half a dozen letters just tearing strips off these ****wits.

(Presumably a predictable silence from the Murdoch/Stokes stables.)

As time goes on I think more and more people are realising Howard's legacy is complete shite.

Howard/Costello was and still is the greatest 1-2 PM/treasurer combo in political history.

if things are so bad, Albo could be the hero of the generation and undo "it"

The problem you've got is that no-one knows whether this is sincere or not. You post so flippantly so frequently - and so absurdly - that there's no real way of approaching this post as a point of discussion or inquiry. It is as self contained, as complete a statement as to be beyond argument.

You're a black hole, Xtreme. There's no discourse with you; you suck arguments in and always return back with precisely the same flippancy, completely lacking in anything resembling sincerity.

Poster might be more genuine when (if?) they finally finish school. Some of their posting is grade 6 level, at best.

Couldn't have put it better myself. Happy new year.

That's the technique though, isn't it?

1 Move in to fire at the mainstream of targets
2 Fire off in short bursts and then fly away
3 Roll over and spin round all issues to get back behind them
4 Keep to the blind sides while firing again

Can't shoot back with all the spinning and the rolling around that folk like that do. There's no discourse because there isn't meant to be!

You just wonder what meagre pleasure is derived from it though. All a bit sad really.

And that's why Xtreme is the sacred gem of Bigfooty

That in itself is a load of shit, the main reason you got from the idiots that voted for Howard in '96 was some mumbling along the lines of Keating being too arrogant. You can accuse Albanese of a lot of things but Keating style arrogance is not one of them.
Keating was on another level, sure, but **** me, don't buy a multi-million dollar beach house a year out from an election...

1996 was a bit of a drover's dog election, IMO. We were coming out of the recession very slowly, and there was a feeling things had stagnated. I've just looked up the figures and the unemployment rate was bouncing around in the 8-9% range all through 1995, and interest rates weren't coming down (the most recent move had been up to 7.5% in December 1994, compared to the current 4.35%, which everyone is losing their minds over....)

And they'd been in government for more than a decade. Nobody was going to survive that.

For a second day running we’ve got half a dozen letters in the SMH methodically ripping strips off Howard’s record from any number of angles. Great to see!

Am convinced is a bot. If not should find a job that suits.

Who writes letters/emails to newspapers these days? Genuine question.

Who would bother? Only those currently or formerly engaged in politics surely. Everytime I google the name of one of these outrages citizens who whose 'letters' are publiched I find they're serial offenders.

A bit like social media I guess- we're all settled in our views and arguing with each other. The vast majority couldn't give a toss.

I don’t know any of the SMH letter writers personally, but I can say I’ve read the page for years and find even today, in the face of the SM onslaught, it’s still often very stimulating and well argued.

One of my past indulgences was reading The Saturday & Sunday Age, I just can’t do it anymore 😔

Totally agree. But these are the voices of those already engaged in the political process.

If the outcome of The Voice Referendum taught me one thing, it was the growing disconnect between the reasoned voices of those who are comfortable expressing their views in the media and those who vote.

After the less-than-flattering cabinet papers released the other day it was a clear Nice Old Uncle Johnny snowjob to have him guesting on ABC Radio India Test and broadcast yesterday.

The ABC should be ashamed of itself.
He's 85, thankfully we won't have to listen to the little weasel campaigner for much longer.
