Yeah maybe, hard to tell. Maybe they have Nelson slightly ahead of Butler, but they want Nelson to perform well enough to win the spot. They know what they will get with Butler.

Kicked 53 goals in just his second season, with Lecras ACL and Kennedy being out most of the season.

That year he had quinten lynch as the second tall and cox/ naitanu as FF(cox AA fp). Not denying that he can kick 50 but structurally he had support and wasn't always on the best defender or the second best defender

Find it strange that they are now confident the grass will be ok now. You would want to be 110% its fine, any knee / ankle injuries and there would be hell to pay. 7 days seems a very short turnaround after laying a large amount of new turf.

Im pretty confident on Butler coming back in for round 1.

He is being hevily managed especially after a niggle or two over pre season.

Ever since Simmo has arrived his workload has been managed and its helped him get out on the park more often and made a noticeable improvement to the amount of contests he gets too, which is his specialty.

Cole was in last week's sqaud and even survived the cut that morning but didn't rock up.

Butler is in a group of players that it's really hard to get a handle on what the pecking order is within the club

FWIW of the players I named as possible exclusions I thought Butler was the least likely to miss

Interesting with Butler. Do they not see him as best 22 now? Surely they would want at least 2 games into him.

Duggan definitely out for Rd 1. Looks like they want him to fight his way through the WAFL

I think they know what they will get already with butler so there's no need to risk him.

Possibly but I think nelson will be a full time mid eventually. With Mitchell coming in I guess nelson could play back more this season tho
