Depends how likely the club sees Warner, other potential targets, or the viability of guys like Hutchinson or Chesser to play in the middle

Saints may have promised him guaranteed midfield time, we may not have been keen to do that.
Or maybe McQualter just wasnt keen on a guy with Carrolls attributes
I think you are being Bias here in thinking the eagles had that call

I personally think SoS convinced him he has a better future at St Kilda or gave him a longer contract

3 years $500k would have got him to the eagles and the club should have made sure he was an eagle

Maybe he just likes Melbourne and didn't want to go back to Perth?

I did say that maybe the saints promised him more game time

I just dont think we were that keen on him. Hes a nice top have player for sure, good depth but realistically is probably a 20-25 player on a list at best

Interesting move.

You’d expect that he’d be behind 3 other 188cm-and-above guys, in Steele, Macrae and Phillipou, and all-things-being-equal, you’d imagine he’ll be behind Hunter Clark as well, which would mean he’s fighting for potentially the last midfield spot, with Dow and Windhager.

Those last two are more explosive/quick/dynamic than him, and Windy tags really well, so that won’t help his chances, especially with the first 4 guys I named all lacking explosive speed.

Then there’s whoever we draft with our first pick this year, and Zak Jones and Hugo Garcia, so he’s certainly likely to have a fight on his hands to get a game.

Does look alike a very useful depth option though, with genuine scope to improve, so you can see why we grabbed him. Especially with Clark in particular being so injury-prone. Those two might actually be fighting for one spot.

It's become fairly obvious in the last three years that the Eagle have the worst list management system in the AFL.

By a mile.

I reckon the only place Chesser plays midfield is the Frankston Dolphins.

Having looked a bit more into his numbers, it raises a few question marks about what sort of role he actually plays, or is best suited to.

Even in the VFL, when his disposal numbers were high, his contested possession and clearance numbers were not, from the small sample size I’ve seen (eg 30 disposals, 11 contested, 3 clearances), so that doesn’t exactly augur well for him, if he’s 188cm and best suited to playing in the guts.

When Paddy Dow had 32 in what may have been his last VFL game, he had 19 contested and 11 clearances. In Hunter Clark’s last game there he had 21 contested and 9 clearances. When 19yo Hugo Garcia had 34 late in the year, he had 16 and 9. In Pou’s last game there he had 16 and 9, and 9 tackles. And Windhager was posting numbers like these from day 1 in the VFL.

So I take it Carroll is more of an “inside receiver”?

Let me know when you’ve figured it out - 4 years in the system and I’m still none the wiser.

It’ll be really interesting to see if he comes on at St Kilda. Certainly still young, but I don’t know that there’s enough to his game.

Yeah he doesn’t seem to have an obvious point of difference, and he doesn’t seem to have the weapons required to play the sort of role he seems best suited to.

Looking at his two 20 disposal games early in the year- when he was playing midfield in Walsh’s absence- he was clearly Carlton’s no.4 in at centre bounces (well clear of those in 5th for CBA’s in each game), yet he had just 7 contested possessions in each of those games, and just 1 and 3 clearances.

So a very similar type deal to the VFL numbers I saw.

His contested-to-uncontested ratio was very low in those games for someone playing predominantly inside (just 35% cont), and he wasn’t winning anywhere near enough clearances.

Yet he doesn’t have the “hurt factor” to compensate being lacking in those areas.

So if he’s going to make it, he either needs to really up his inside game significantly, start hurting teams a lot more when he does get it, or both.

Im actually surprised both Kennedy & Carroll have been let go
I would have thought 1 of the 2 would have been kept (Carroll)
I think it’s because they really like/prefer Lord, are backing in Hollands x 2, and have FOS/Draper/Jagga and the two Camporeales coming in.

That could be the case but Carlton have opened up 10 list spots and have Hynes and a Cat B rookie come onto the list

Can not believe the eagles didnt get this kid

Why would he want to go to St Kilda when a team like the eagles would give him every opportunity and games as well as being his home state and probably more of a chance to play his position.

Just doesnt make sense
His been in Melbourne for 4 years is probably settled now not every kid wants to play at home. St kilda has a very average midfield he will definitely get opportunities up to him to show what his got

Carrol isnt even from Perth, the go-home factor wouldnt be there so much anwyay.
Same thing as the vic metro vs vic country thing where the vic country boys are generally happier to live in another state

Hes spent more time in Melbourne than Perth
