West Coast vs Hawks today, both teams on two wins and a percentage of 60.
The loser will be the favourite to get the number 1 draft pick.

Typical richmond FW... get the rock you crawled out from under a few yrs ago ready again.
You're on your way back to obscurity.

Funny how Collingwood never copped this much crap for "tanking" back in 2021 when Nick Daicos was in the draft pool and the Pies needed to maximise their draft points to match any bidding from the bottom teams.

The Pie's recent history...

2018... 3rd... lost QF v WCE... won SF v GWS... won PF v Rich... lost GF v WCE

2019... 4th... won QF v Geel........................... lost PF v GWS

2020... 8th... won EF v WCE... lost SF v Geel

2021...17th...definitely not tanking. Selected Nick Daicos with the 4th pick.

2022... 4th... lost QF v Geel... won SF v Freo... lost PF v Syd

2023... 1st... 8 wins, 1 loss... premiership favourites.

This is actually the TEXTBOOK definition of tanking. The Pies have been a perennial finalist... a talent-laden team in premiership contention every year since 2018. For some reason they imploded early in 2021, sacked their coach, raised the white flag and played the entire season with the handbrake on... Sheer coincidence that a generational talent was available to them later that year under the Father-Son rule if they could the match the opposition bid.

Why did Buckley part ways with the club, then?

If it was all part of the plan, nudge nudge wink wink, they'd have been overjoyed with him successfully losing and would have given him an extension....

Spot on. 2021 was a trainwreck. It was just one thing after another. The trade period fiasco, Eddie having to quit after his response to the Do Better report, the speculation around JDG's legal issues, Buckley resigning in the middle of the year and the list goes on.

Sounds like a lot of excuses...

You still had the same talented players on your list who were good enough to win finals in 2020 and 2022

How come they couldn't be arsed trying in 2021 when things went sour? You do realise this is the actual definition of tanking?

e.g. Nick Kyrgios, good enough to make the final of any tournament he enters... But he wakes up one day with a hangover, or just isn't feeling it for some reason... Loses the first set against some journeyman no-hoper in the 1st round... Gets a few bad line calls... Argues with the umpire... argues with the crowd... and then doesn't give a rat's arse, quits running, tries to lace winners with every forehand, serves double faults and loses 0-6 in the final set.

That's tanking.

Which is what Collingwood did in 2021.

It's not tanking when a crappy tennis player loses in straight sets or when a crappy football team loses and finishes down in the cellar. That's just being bad. There's nothing manufactured about it. People keep saying that us trading Tom Mitchell and Jaeger O'Meara means we're tanking, but we had the worst midfield in the AFL last year with those two. Our midfield is better this year with the young blokes in the guts. We're just a really bad team right now. Everyone has seen this coming for a long time and predicted us spooners every year for the past 3 seasons. Our current level of mediocrity is due to 10 years of bad recruiting. It's not the result of us trading 2 ageing, ineffective midfield plodders.

Pies weren’t tanking in 2021, they just had a crap year.

They had no high picks in that draft either, they knew they were getting daicos but that was it.

People throw around the word tanking all the time thinking it’s happening every season. It isn’t, this isn’t the NBA where one or two guys can transform a side instantly.

When there were priority picks, there was tanking. Now there are no priority picks there is no tanking.

Harley Reid isn’t going to make any of the current bottom 3 much better next year, there could still be other standouts in the draft too.

Regardless I expect hawks to win comfortably today, as the eagles are fielding a wafl side.

Been watching footy for over 60 years and can’t remember a season with 3 clubs as shite as WC, Hawks and NM. It’s like 2013 but with 3 Melbourne teams in the comp.

2012 with Melbourne, GC & GWS.

Those 3 clubs won a combined total of 4 games against all other clubs in the comp. They might have come out with a record of 4-3-2 wins but boosted by 5 wins against each other.

And the Bulldogs were a genuine spoon tier side that year too (5 wins, 67%, only 2 wins against sides not named Melbourne/GC/GWS).

I don’t think so.

I expect the Hawks to win by 8+ goals. Eagles are still decimated. Hawks would have beaten Adelaide if Fogarty didn’t nail a shot from the boundary - that’s just being beaten.

Plus it’s a long season - there’s still 2 more Harley Reid cups to be played. I wouldn’t stress if I won today and wanted the number 1 pick.

Nah... 2012 was way worse, but you weren't paying attention. (Too busy cheering for the Hawks :D)

2012 cellar
14. Port...... 5 wins... 79%
15. Dogs..... 5 wins... 67%
16. Melb..... 4 wins... 67%
17. Suns..... 3 wins... 61%
18. Giants... 2 wins... 46%

The Giants clearly weren't up to AFL standard in their inaugural season. (46%!!!)
Let's remove them from the equation and see how the bottom 3 looked without the easy win over GWS.

2012 cellar without Giants in the comp
Dogs... 4 wins... 64%
Melb... 2 wins... 61%
Suns... 2 wins... 58%

ooof  That looks as bad as the current bottom 3. But wait! It gets worse...

Aside from Ablett, the Gold Coast Suns weren't that much better (in year 2) than the Giants.
So let's also remove them from the equation and see how the bottom 3 looked without the easy wins over the 2 newbies..

2012 cellar without Suns or Giants in the comp
Port... 4 wins... 76%
Dogs... 3 wins... 62%
Melb.... 1 win.... 58%

As you can see, the bottom 3 non-expansion teams were bad enough on their own.
Add the 2 newbies into the mix and the 2012 cellar-dwellers were far worse than the 2023 bottom 3.

-------------------------------------------------

I was looking at the ladder last night and the thing which struck me was how close and competitive the competition was from Collingwood (1st) all the way down to Richmond (14th, 99.5%). Even the Giants in 15th aren't that bad.

North, West coast and Hawthorn are crap. But none of them are getting any respite. The competition is so tight. There aren't any bad sides sitting in 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th position like there were in previous seasons. Not much chance of us cellar-dwellers chalking up a flukey win because a mediocre mid-table team took us lightly.

The bad teams are being made to look even worse by the 14 or 15 decent teams above them, if that makes any sense. e.g. Only 2 months ago, the Swans and Tigers had genuine hopes of winning the flag. But they've found it tough in 2023 and they're sitting in 12th and 14th. Who could've foreseen that?

I don't think the comp has ever been this even. There are no superpowers in the modern era. What we're seeing is a dozen or more decent teams who are all capable of beating each other. Full on parity... It's a bit like American sports leagues in that respect. Well, the NFL and NHL anyway.
