I've heard this about many aspects of Essendon's current plight, which is probably why it's hard to pinpoint what exactly Essendon need to do to get better.
Other examples include:
- Dylan Shiel is the least of their problems
- McGrath over Taranto is the least of their problems
- Jake Stringer is the least of their problems
- Daniher's likely departure is the least of the problems
- Captain Heppell is the least of their problems
- Darcy Parish is the least of their problems
- Aaron Francis is the least of their problems
- Adrian Dodoro is the least of their problems
Undoubtably Smith isn't a major problem, but he's symptomatic of bigger problems at the club - namely how many smaller players they've recruited who haven't progressed beyond being B-graders.
Had our 1st and 2nd rnd picks removed which cost us getting Botempli in the draft
Were barred from playing finals after qualifying
Copped the biggest fine ever in the history of the game
Yeah but the AFL looked after us![]()
This is so spot on,
Its the constant ability to overrate their own. If everything was chugging along so well, why haven't they won a final in 5,847 days ?

You were rewarded with pick one for the year your player penalties finally kicked in.
Was a light penalty for a club-wide systematic doping regime implemented by the senior coach.
As I’ve continually stated in various threads which so many seem to avoid addressing, ask Essendon supporters what our beef with the club is rather than trying to attack our success or the least of our worries (most of which are just that, the least of our worries)

So you've made finals? Spare me.
2010 - 14th
2011- 8th
2012 - 11th
2013 - 9th (ASADA) really should have been 7th
2014 - 7th
2015 - 15th
2016 - 18th
2017 - 7th
2018 - 11th
2019 - 8th
2020 - 11th
Looks like a case of your club overachieving and trying mini-rebuilds without ever actually going for a full bottoming out. Players like Shiel, Stringer, Smith are not players you build a club around.
I don’t think Essendon supporters can separate how these issues are inter-related.
McGrath is a perfect example of this. Great player, good young leader but literally the last type of player Essendon needed when they took him at number one.
For a few years he develops on a half back flank, and this year he finally gets his chance in the midfield which consequentially results in other players output dropping, or not getting their chance until later in the season. It’s like shuffling the deck chairs in the Titanic.
The Dylan Shiel trade wasn’t going to solve any of their issues either. It’s like Dodoro thought ‘good player, best available’ but didn’t envisage how adding another small mid was going to push out other guys who should be developing there like Parish or McGrath. There’s nothing strategic about their list management at all - it’s all throwing darts and hoping somehow one will eventually lift them into contention. In reality it’s a cyclical papering over the cracks.
It’s sad the masses never understood the inner details of the drugs saga. 7 clubs were apparently doing it.
Sure, but not winning a final for 16 years is worse than finishing bottom 2 for a few. The AFL needs to sort out their draft compensation to stop teams having to tank to be able to move upwards.
You'd have evidence of that... or is it just "someone in the know" told you? It’s sad the masses never understood the inner details of the drugs saga. 7 clubs were apparently doing it.
We were too stupid to self report in hope of getting off or a lesser penalty

Hasn't exactly worked for Carlton. Into year 8 of a 3 year rebuild. Essendon has not done any better with the draft. Geelong scored the jackpot when they rorted the father son rule. Hawthorn picked up some gold thanks to Richmond and others passing on selections which they snapped up. They just kept topping up. It has finally gone pear shaped for them, but it took 15 years. Sydney were never allowed to tank until they screwed the AFL with Buddy, then Gillon went after them big time. All bar W/Coast's 2018 flag were tainted with allegations of drug use.
And when Carlton found out that it was super dodgy they passed on it. How did Essendon go the second time they played Carlton once the drugs had worn off?Funny how people forget this.
Remember when we beat Carlton? they were so pissed off that they sent spies to see what Essendon were up and when ASADA asked Carlton for the supposed "tape" as evidence they couldn't give it lols
My arse Carlton were trying to bust Essendon,Carlton wanted to know what gear Essendon were on for them selves
How did it cost Essendon the Bont when he was taken at 4 and you finished 9th?Had our 1st and 2nd rnd picks removed which cost us getting Botempli in the draft
Were barred from playing finals after qualifying

No doubt in my mind that when Balme returned to Richmond things fell into place. Geez who would begrudge them after all of the crap they endured for 30 years. Balme had to put up with Malthouse's crap for so many years. Carlton's biggest mistake was sacking Ratten. He was developing something, but they panicked and hired that shit Malthouse who split the club and eveyone played for themselves. Don't be surprised if you see Lyon coaching the Blues next year...You guys and Melbourne are the poster children for losing culture being bad, yet no one talks about how West Coast, Hawthorn, Collingwood, Richmond have won flags off the back of it. It doesn’t guarantee success but you need Tom Hawkins, Gary Ablett, Dangerfield luck otherwise.
Well then that's a good thing. It can be fixed. Not really sure its only we need a couple of players. To me its a colllective thing. There is no team work, there is no willingness to compete if it doesn't go their way. Its mental imo.
How did it cost Essendon the Bont when he was taken at 4 and you finished 9th?
Followed by a 9 day break. Then one game then another 9 day break before playing a team that had played 7 games in 31 days. That’s six consecutive 5 day breaks then arriving at the ground an hour before the game after three and a half hours on a bus. Dont want to gloss over our cracks but it’s no surprise that they were flat.Geelong has already played 3 games in 9 days (def Nth by 33, StK by 59 and Port by 60) ... so I'm not sure that was much of a factor.
Matthew Lloyd slams bombers
Does Lloyd go out of his way to criticise Essendon or he is just genuinely pi$$ed at how they are travelling?
