Sunday night match at Marvel would be a ratings bonanza....Holiday Monday in Melbourne.andrew & sybil discussing opening round
Essendon play Geelong
Hilariously stupid of the AFL if they’re going to continue with this rubbish every year.Does the AFL want game 1 to be a joke?
Because with the rain and slosh that will be the playing conditions with next to no crowd as a spectacle it would be a horrid look.
Most TV viewers will look elsewhere as well. No-one enjoys are AFL water polo game. No-one.
Or we could just get on with life hahaDo we look at moving GWS/Pies to Saturday night so we've got something to watch that night...
or just have Round 1 played over 2 weeks. 4 games 1st week and 5 the next. split round. That way the AFL can start earlier.Time to put flOpening Round in the bin.
Don't be silly. That makes way too much sense for the AFL.or just have Round 1 played over 2 weeks. 4 games 1st week and 5 the next. split round. That way the AFL can start earlier.
This one doesn't really impact any other teams apart from GCS and ESS so might be an option for a mid week gameI posted this a couple of posts earlier, but I'm just going to expand on it a bit.

OPTION 1:
Round 14: Gold Coast hosts Essendon in round 14. (Essendon vs Geelong moves to round 16 where both clubs currently have a bye)
Round 15: Gold Coast hosts Melbourne in round 15 and GWS now have a bye in that round
Round 16: GWS host Gold Coast in round 16 and Melbourne has a bye (along with Brisbane)
Done. Fixed
Bombers and Suns don't get a mid-season bye, but our Bye is in round 4. Unfortunately, If our bye remains in round 4 and that round remains unchanged, then we aren't getting a mid-season bye. Otherwise that would mean ourselves and another club can only play 22 games instead of 23.
The only way we get a mid-season bye, is if we don't get a bye in round 4. Some might say, play Essendon and Hawthorn two times in 4 weeks (i.e play in round 4 where they both have a bye). That doesn't work because the Bombers and Hawks only meet once this year, so having them play twice would require a complete restructure of the entire fixture.
Option 2:
The only other option is to play it over the spare weekend before the finals.
If anyone can come up with any other option that actually works I'd like to hear them. I'm open to ideas.
I think option 1 is good. Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good.
I don't know what's more dangerous. The wrath of god or the wrath of the AFL?Suspect decision will be made tomorrow
Round zero is a terrible concept and the wrath of God justified
The Geelong vs Brisbane game will be round 3. Gold Coast vs Essendon likely to be a midweek game not long after the bye roundsMakes perfectly good sense what other options are there?
