List Mgmt. Hawk's List Management for 2025

Usually do one of these before the trade period but was caught-up with other stuff this year so here is my post-trade period update! This is what I have at the moment. As you can see, firstly the list is STACKED in terms of talent (which we already knew) but is also pretty close to being completely full as it is. If what I have is correct, then we have 36 primary list, 4 Cat A and 1 Cat B locked in for next year which leaves us with limited options in terms of drafting next month and SSP/MSD in 2025.

If I had to guess, I'd say we are likely to delist-then-rookie one or both of Gunston and/or Breust for flexibility. Regardless, we can only intake a max of 2 players to primary/Cat A list at the moment plus the option of another Cat B player if we want (which I suspect we will re-sign Bennetts with).

As usual, if you spot any mistakes then please let me know :)

Sam on SEN 2 months ago:

“I love ‘Frosty’, he is one of my favourites.”

Mitchell alluded to a spot in defence for Frost next year even with Barrass and Battle coming in.

He is looking to add flexibility to the likes of captain James Sicily, Blake Hardwick and Josh Weddle who spent the majority of their time in defence in 2024 but have the respective capabilities to contribute strongly elsewhere on the ground.”

Frost will continue to play in our first choice backline. No idea why people keep suggesting otherwise. He’s never played a game at Box Hill 🤷‍♂️

Our 2 key defenders will be Barrass and Frost with 2 of Battle, Sicily, Scrimshaw or Weddle as hybrids.

The other two will play further up the ground.

So I’m interested in our list profile and depth so wanted to analyse the A team and whose next in for each spot. Obviously doesn’t cover positional flexibility looking at best player for position.

Defence A team
Hardwick Barrass Battle
Impey Scrimshaw Sicily
IC: Amon
Defence B team
Mitchell Blanck Serong
BMac Frost Ryan
IC: Mraz

Midfield A team
Weddle Newk Massimo
Meek Day Worpel
IC: Nash Mackenzie
Midfield B team
Morrison Hustwaite CJ
Ramsden Ward Maginness
IC: Uhr-Henry Anderson

Forwards A team
Moore Chol CMac
Dear Lewis Watson
IC: ginnivan
Forwards B team
Gunston Scaife Butler
Breust Reeves McCabe
IC: Hill

It looks like a pretty strong list now. I think the forward backups look the one area we need to improve for talent and also to replace Gunston and Breust. Not much in the free agency space forward will be interesting to see players who go forward this year as clearly some will have to.
There's definitely going to be a migration of some of those defenders into the front half!

Thanks FB19, I always work it this way too, two seperate teams possible and probable. Reckon we will find out who Sammy throws forward in the pre season soon enough. That extra third tall is the only pressing need atm, the rest look pretty bloody solid. No list cloggers is really bloody refreshing.

I like what you have done there, it’s a good way of making the list needs more clearer.

Defence and midfield look very solid.

Reckon Scaife will have a decent opportunity at making a spot as a key forward his this year with Lewis being out.

My best 22: I think we will see games with Gunston and Bruest come in for the likes of ward and dear. Lewis gets into the team if fit and firing, maybe for a Frost? But we have a good and exciting list. Excited to see how sam lines up in 2025

Battle Barrass Impey
Amon Scrimma Hardwick

Massimo Day Weddle

Ginni Moore CMac
Chol Sicily Wizard

Meek, Worpel, Newcombe,

Frost, Nash, Frenchie, Dear, Ward (Sub)

Good Depth: Morrison, Lewis, CJ, Bruest, Blank, Mitchell, Gunston, Maginnes, Serong

My team exactly. Agree that if/when Lewis returns, Sicily goes back and Frosty misses.

We can put out a really strong team this season. We will have some quality depth options missing out on games.

Hardwick - Barrass - Impey
Scrimshaw - Sicily - Battle

Meek - Newcombe - Day
Amon - Worpel - D'Ambrosio

Moore - Dear - MacDonald
Watson - Chol - Ginnivan

Bench:
Weddle
Nash
Mackenzie
Maginess / Ward / Frost / CJ

Sub:
Breust / Gunston

* Lewis would come into the side once he's ready to do so. I would guess that Gunston or Breust drop out and someone else gets the sub role.

Depth and/or developing: Morrison, Reeves, Serong, McCabe, Butler, Mitchell, Blanck, Ryan, Hustwaite, Ramsden, Scaife, Macdonald, Mraz, Anderson, Hill, JUH

As much as I would love Marx back on the left wing I think he's got a spot sewn up on the backline permanently as he generates so many scores from the back half with his laser like kicking.

So many times last year we had our backs to the walls defending repeat inside 50s only for Amon to split the entire opposition defense to a running Weddle/Impey. Completely swings momentum our way.

Someone has to make way for both Battle and Barrass though, so I expect Amon will spend time on a wing and rotating through the backline. Hopefully Weddle gets to rotate through the wing and HFF position too.

Q: What does Karl Amon say to Frenchy when he wants him to shepherd so he can pick up the ball more easily?
A: “mine Cam(pf)”

Footy wire has us with 12 players OOC in 2025. 2 leave in Breust and Gunston. Meek Dear Worpel seem like no brainer extensions assuming the worpedo doesn’t want to exercise FA rights and move down the highway. That leaves 7.
Assume frosty gets one more year if he’s ok potentially being depth.
Mitchell Butler Ward Ryan Serong Scaife are the others and are clearly the guys who need to have a big year.
Mitchell would seem to be backup for Impey who isn’t going anywhere soon despite turning 30 next year. Injuries or bide his time.
Butler if they keep playing him forward is cooked but will get another gig on a wing somewhere to show his attributes. Doubt he fits us now we have too many options everywhere he plays except right wing. Even there CJ Weddle Morrison in front of him.
Ward isn’t in trouble but needs to make a mid spot his own carrying in his finals form. Going to be tough with the established 4 and mackenzie coming.
Ryan I’m not seeing the same upside as other posters. Figure he’s the Hardwick replacement long term but I personally think he’s in trouble given our defensive depth.
Serong at the wrong club now unless he goes forward. Expect he asks to be traded.
Scaife needs to make great strides this year to stay on the list. Has his chance with Lewis recovering needs a big preseason.
I figure clubs come for our depth this year especially the pies who want established players. Mitchell & Serong especially would suit them and with 2 years of future picks now teams will get aggressive to pick off the pieces they need.

This i am keen on, he can play down back no sweat so great depth in case of major injury blowouts. But i think his opportunity lies forward, played there as junior and the stocks are thinner, while Gunstan definitely wont play the whole season. Love to see him get a shot.

Isn't Massimo out of contract end of 2025 too or have I missed something?

Yes we offered 2 years so that’s right but footy wire has him coming out in 2027. I think that’s a mistake I can’t find any information about an extension albeit would seem a formality if his form holds early this year.

Yeah I haven't seen anything on further extensions since we acquired him on our two year offer

Lewis is never depth. As soon as he's body is ready, sadly a big ? He will be one of the first picked every single week
