Main reason would be that last year they almost completely ignored players from bottom 8 sides. They had a couple but it was a clear direction to lick players from top 8 sides.

I wouldn't sweat it either way. The ferret didn't have Franklin, Roughhead, Cyril, Poppy and Gunston sharing the goals with him.

The most underrated aspect of Breust is that he has kicked 500 alongside a group of all time greats who drew the ball more and were kicking well into the three figures as well. Because he kept that kind of company and still stood out, and then continued his output long after they were all gone, he's elevated to a much higher level than his final tally.

I hope that after he retires he stays at Hawthorn in some sort of coaching capacity. Gary Lyon during the game on the weekend was glowing in praise of his knowledge of his forward craft when he last spoke to him, so sounds like he may have something to offer in that department.

For those interested (and in the absence of the old goalkicking thread), Luke Breust became the 63rd player in history to kick 500 goals (and 10th non key forward).

He now has 509 and remains 63rd. Longmire (511), Sumich (514) and Stevie J (516) are the players in his sight to overtake next.

Top 50 all time requires 550 goals, which would put him past Daicos, Tredrea and Gehrig (all equal on 549).

Since I last posted the above, Luke Breust has now moved to 58th of all time.

He has 523 goals and has gone past John Longmire, Peter Sumich, Steve Johnson, Brent Harvey and Michael O'Loughlin.

He is now 8th all time for goals from a non key forward.

No one considers Dunstall a small forward. It's not simply about wikipedia height. Dunstall was obviously a full forward. His height was normal for a full forward of his era. It's like trying to argue Polly Farmer wasn't a ruckman because he is shorter than the rucks of today (shorter than some of the mids, let alone KPP's in fact). However, Polly Farmer's height was similarly advantageous as Max Gawn's is today. He was about the same percentage taller than his teammates than Max is to his (just the world is getting taller). We may reach a point where Mitch Lewis is not considered KPP height, just as we do with Brereton and Dunstall today.

Either way, I perfer the term "non KPP forward" rather than using the term small or medium forward, as the latter inevitably gets people arguing over cms, rather than the position and style of play.

Breust is 8th as far as non KPP forwards go (behind only Matthews, Bartlett, Betts, Milne, (Dick) Harris, (Brad) Johnson and Daicos).

IMO Guys like Matthews and Bartlett don't count because they were clearly rovers who rested forward. Small forwards need to be specialised, guys like Breust and Stevie J may have spent some time in the middle but most of their career has been in the forward 50.

Luke Breust is far and away the most consistent specialised AFL small / medium forward of all time, both in terms of goal kicking and general availability. Barely ever injured, rested or held goalless. Amongst the most underrated players in the modern era.

thanks, your description also suits players who played other positions/ areas of the ground than fwds (mid, defence, ruck, etc.) - e.g. Lethal, Hale?
