Speculation Harley Reid [OOC 2026]

The Dons will be absolutely up to their necks in this trade.

Harley trained at Essendon and played in the VFL team prior to being drafted so knows the players already and also has the close connection with Duursma clan.

We will also have the draft capital (two first rounders plus 26 and 27 firsts) and the salary cap to facilitate.

I think a lot will hinge on if Warner nominates WC as it's an easier sell to the fan base.
Not really.

We can easily get Warner in without giving up Reid.

Reid also played at Carlton and his girlfriend plays AFLW for them.

Not sure how playing a couple of games at Essendon VFL 2 years ago is any kind of pull over any other options.

Most people who do work experience don't really feel any 'pull' to go work there full time.

We have been linked since mid last year already. https://www.sen.com.au/news/2024/05/05/the-watch-on-essendon-and-harley-reid

I would also dare say as per your example if someone had done work experience and enjoyed the environment had multiple employment offers of similar standing, being familiar with the staff and environment would play a part in choosing said employer.

You can be in denial all you want, no skin off my back.

Additionally no one is saying you can't get Warner and keep Reid. I am just saying I believe if Warner nominates WC that Reid might see that as his best opportunity to get out.

We will know a lot more in 6-8 months time if he hasn't signed an extension yet. Tick tock.

If Warner nominates west coast, then that would be the absolute best possible sign to stick around, not an excuse to get out lmao.

Tom Morris says a 'possible' proposal may come from Essendon for Reid.

Whoopdie-doo.

I imagine 9 other Vic clubs will also come with a 'proposal'.

If Warner chooses WCE, it'll have zero bearing on whether Reid decides to re-sign or not.

your theory makes 0 sense, but think whatever you like :thumbsupemoji:
"Hey, WCE improving the side as fast as possible, better jump ship to a team that hasn't won a final in 20+ years and whose coach says he wants 8 years to build a nucleus of talent to contend."

Very sensitive lot of WC fans in here. Clearly a touchy subject!
You're saying he'd want to go to Essendon because he did a train on a couple of years ago and linked a Tom Morris article saying that Essendon would make a play, which you touted as him being 'linked'.

That's not him being 'linked', that's reporting the bleeding obvious.

About as legit as AP saying he's 'linked' to Richmond because some fan poddy said so.

Never said he’d want to, said we will be in it up to our necks for a trade. Everything I’ve said makes complete sense.

I get it’s touchy for you guys being a #1 pick. All good, we can revisit in 7 months and see how you guys are feeling then. Cheers

Every club in Vic will be 'up to their necks' should he request a trade home. I'm just saying Essendon aren't a special case.

I never said they were a special case but you are just being deliberately obtuse now. I said we have multiple credible links to Reid already in addition to Harley and Nate Caddy being extremely close friends. These are all facts whether it amounts to something or not so you don't have to be so defensive about it.

You're also blatantly wrong in your assertion every club will be up to their necks. Whilst no doubt every single club will be interested in Reid very few will be able to meet both the trade/draft price to WC and the salary price he will command.

Vic Clubs - 10
Trade Capital - 2, Realistically I would say only Essendon or Richmond are the only Vic clubs with multiple first round picks plus two future firsts. Essendon also has two seconds this year as well which we can also flip into additional first for clubs looking to trade for academy points of which is there are many this year. Other clubs may be willing to give up established talent which would throw their hat in the ring but who knows.
Salary Space - 5, without intimate knowledge of every club I would assume all of Saints, Richmond, North, Hawthorn and Essendon would be able to offer Reid a godfather offer. Possibly more but certainly not all 10.

You said that adding one of the best mids in the comp the eagles midfield would be a good excuse for Reid to leave. Tell me how that makes sense, because to every other person it doesnt make even the tiniest bit of sense.

How does adding Warner make the Eagles a lesser option for Reid??

Sure, they're close friends.

As is Nick Watson.

As is his girlfriend at Carlton.

He's also very close friends with Campbell Chesser, who's his current teammate.

I get that every supporter wants to make the case as to why he should pick their club but ultimately, his decision will have nothing to do with that.

It'll be based on money + years + whether he sees them realistically contending for a flat within the next decade.

Based on his pre-draft interviews, it's just as likely he leans toward Collingwood or Geelong, should he actually want to go home.

You're also blatantly wrong in your assertion every club will be up to their necks. Whilst no doubt every single club will be interested in Reid very few will be able to meet both the trade/draft price to WC and the salary price he will command.

Well, unfortunately for WCE that'll mean less if he's out of contract.

That's the case if he requested a trade this year, which I find highly unlikely.

It'll be a free for all end of next year if he's still unsigned.

WCE have less wins in three combined seasons than Essendon did last year. Four of the players in the top 10 of your B&F are turning 31-33 years old this year, and another one left the club. The good news is Duggan will still be in his prime if you can win a premiership within 2 years. If Brad Scott is right and we need 8 years, how many do you think you need?

Less than Essendon, a club which has been mired in mid table purgatory for 20 years and whose coach has admitted it'll take them years to be competitive, right when Merrett, McKay, Langdon, etc are retiring.

They'd have learnt nothing from 20 years of Dodo's 'wonderful' list management if they throw the farm at Reid to be their saviour.

No actually, Merrett is the only player turning 30 in our best 22. WCE have five times that. And we don't have to worry about Langdon mate, he doesn't even play for us.
Reid would actually complete our midfield and I am all in for him. Whatever it takes ;)

Two things dont relate to each other in any way

In regards to this Id say their is literally 0% chance Reid goes this off season. Its 2026. OOC just isnt that important for a guy at his level. We saw that with Chris Judd for example who we got a very good deal from despite being OOC

We cant really give him up this year because if we gain too many assets all we are doing is collecting assets for Sydney to take from us. No point. Best to go into Sydney with limited assets so we can only give what we have

Essendon fans need to get the hand off it. If he goes to Essendon it isnt cos they are a good destination, its because they are the only ones who can afford him.

In all honesty my want is for him to go to Essendon if he leaves but he wont go there. I expect it will be Collingwood, Richmond or Hawthorn in that order

Obviously I meant Langford.

Let's see, previous offseason talk about Hobbs leaving, Tsatas being traded, Merrett turning 30, wanting to trade Parish.

I fail to see how Reid 'completes' your midfield.

It's not like Essendon improved their list in any meaningful way over the off season and you've just traded out a 40+ goal forward for scraps.

If Reid did request a trade to Essendon, I look forward to cleaning them out of picks and another 20 years of not winning a final.

Not that I want blow smoke up Essendons arse here but hes best mates with Nate Caddy isn't he?

With all the mates this guy has, Roger Cooks going to give Reid 10 mill a year as a tourism ambassador just off the back of the economic stimulus he provides from all the friends he has who will come visit him during the year. Probably a 30 mill hit to the tourism industry if he leaves
