I did a post similar to this back in May after GWS thrashed Hawthorn. Many people said GWS would fold again in the run home and posed no threat going forward. Might be time for a recalibration on what the AFL has created for the competition.

Yesterday's humiliation of Richmond shows just what the AFL has done with their overly generous start up concessions for GWS. So as we did back in May, let's look at who DIDN'T play in yesterdays humiliation -
Pick 1 Whitfield
Pick 4 Pickett
Pick 4 Hoskin-Elliot
Pick 5 Buntine
Pick 6 Marchbank
Pick 7 Hopper
Pick 7 Palmer
Pick 7 Ahern
Pick 13 Kennedy
Pick 14 Corr
Pick 14 McCarthy

So that's who DIDN'T play yesterday and it was similar when GWS thrashed Hawthorn in May. So what hope has a rebuilding club got with the pathetically few high draft picks they get each year of rebuilding a side to compete.

This is a side that without the above list of draftees sits second on the ladder and is unlikely to be displaced from there so two home finals at their Sydney stadium.

The AFL got the GWS concessions seriously wrong and it just continues this largesse with the Riverina academy and extra salary cap! Something needs to be done now to address the miscalculation in GWS concessions.

So be very scared of what this holds for the rest of the competition for probably the next 6-8 years at least. Contenders will probably not win a flag and as for rebuilders, at least a decade before you contend.

It is a bit ridiculous that they have all these elite talents not being selected. Salary cap should be squeezed this year rather than in two or three years time. Im fine with them getting concessions as its in the best interest of the game for them to be a top 8 team for a while but complete domination is not healthy for the league either.

They havent won anything yet
How well did the Power compete against them last week at Adelaide Oval? Can you see you side closing the gap on them in the near future? and if you think you can, tell us how you will close that gap given what GWS have in reserve with another haul to come in this years draft.

That's my point, GWS trajectory is on a steep rise, no one will keep with them.

There's only so many players who can play for a club because of list size and the salary cap. Naturally the off cuts from GWS will be spread across the other clubs, Josh Bruce at St Kilda is a good example. I don't buy that they'll dominant for a decade just yet. That requires a lot more than talent, just look at the Suns.

They were also beaten by Collingwood not long ago, Can't see them winning it this year.

According to Barrett (yes I know, but he's sometimes right) they are already 600k over the cap next year without resigning any out of contract players.

Once they win a flag they'll probably lose cola as well so rye aren't going to hold on to all these players through there primes.

They're eventually going to lose a bunch of players due to a combination of salary cap squeeze and players looking for game time. It'll even out after a while.
Not so, with their likely domination, as players did at Brisbane, Geelong and now Hawthorn, players will take less for the collective good and continued success.

The other problem is that GWS have just so much surplus high end talent that every year they will keep turning that over for yet more high draft picks perpetuating the cycle for some time.

All those high picks sitting idle, and yet still killing it on the field begs the question on what has gone so terribly wrong at GC, a team who should be a year ahead on their GF schedule, but continue to look massively off the space. Injuries go part way to explaining the GWS/GC gap, but it seems to be much more than that. A team made of the GWS's idle talent would surely give the current GC team a run for its money.

The GCS tried to be competitive when they entered the competition and recruited established players (and Gablett) while the GWS stockpiled youth, copped beatings leading to more high draft picks and recruited players close to retirement to supply support/guidance. The GWS also, arguably, had even greater concessions than the GCS.

Shit culture at GC.
They came into the comp thinking they were absolute stars and recruited bang average mature players other than Ablett.
GWS recruited so much smarter with their mature players going for 'younger' mature players like Palmer, Ward and seriously older ones like Cornes, McDonald so they wouldn't be relying to highly on players that wouldn't be there by the time they were ready to challenge.

So why are GC such a dismal second to GWS?. They had the same start up concessions.
A little bit culture, a little bit weaker strength of start up draft, a big bit injuries. Plus GWS got to learn off Gold Coast set up mistakes and GWS got more concessions than Gold Coast in the four mini draft players they got high picks for. Also got lucky with Mumford, got him for basically nothing once Buddy squeezed him out of Swans.

Also, when Gold Coast should have been getting first pick for being spooner GWS got the top five picks. GWS selected experienced players more wisely, remember Campbell Brown, Krakouer etc?

Correct and we will be happy to pass some of the surplus to the VFL clubs. We're not greedy and don't get jealous.

Only players I'd want to Blues are Plowman which we already have, Treloar, Adams and Bruce

6 on that list at Blues. Don't mind Sumner
