You're really in rugby union and swans territory in Randwick.

I've lived on the south-eastern edge of the CBD for about twenty years now (though grew up in the suburbs). Other than on game days, where you see some fans leaving the SCG or SFS for town in their team's colors, I find you see very few people wearing club merchandise as street wear. Occasionally you see rabbitohs, roosters, wallabies or swans merchandise.

Sydney's pretty segmented. There is relatively little rugby league presence in the city, the eastern suburbs or the north shore. Most people I encounter these days, if sport comes up, tend to be interested mostly in union, the swans or both.

I also don't find rugby league to be as strong in Sydney as is commonly perceived. I attended schools in Strathfield (middle-ring western suburbs) and Bellevue Hill (eastern suburbs) and lived in the hills district (part of Parramatta Eels territory, which was my league team) as well as upper and lower north shore. As a young kid, I lived near Newcastle, where rugby league definitely is strong. In the eastern suburbs and north shore I encountered quite a lot of prejudice toward rugby league, usually from rugby union enthusiasts or people who didn't like sport at all. This rubbed me the wrong way and kept me motivated to follow league for longer than I probably would have otherwise. (There was also prejudice in Newcastle against Australian Football, but being only little kids at the time, I put less stock in that.) The hills district seemed pretty open to league, though I still wouldn't have said it was particularly strong in that area.

I'm not questioning league's number 1 status in Sydney. That's undoubted. But it is certainly not akin to the dominance of AFL in Melbourne or Adelaide. Even forgetting about crowds, just compare the free-to-air TV ratings in Mel/Ade for the first week of AFL finals with the week 1 NRL ratings in Sydney. Adelaide has about a quarter of Sydney's population, yet got 56 percent of Sydney's numbers (a total of 652k compared with 1157k over the four games). Sydney's total was only 61 percent of Melbourne's (1892k).

The Swans v Giants free-to-air ratings in Sydney are perhaps indicative of the potential for AFL as well: 157k in the afternoon (graveyard shift TV-ratings wise) compared with 249k and 264k for the NRL night games. A fair chunk of the difference is made up by the 60k crowd.

Cheers for the insight mate. It's my first time ever in Sydney so I just expected to see team gear on display in the lead up to the Giants Vs Swans final.

Spot on, that's what they HAVE to do. I lived in Sydney for a few years for work, I lived in Rhodes just as the expansion was happening. I worked in Parramatta but it was literally the 20 min drive in and out that would ever take me further than Homebush. Inner West is beautiful, Leichardt/Drummoyne/Concord/Five Dock/Haberfield, all those areas have good wealth. it's just a shame that the the Spotless stadium is on the tip of the shittest area in Australia.
Haha
Seems to be a poor and unsuccessful relationship generally between Hawks club and their fans with Homebush Bay. See you there in a couple of weeks, if you make it

Ridiculous amount of posts in here predicting the future. It's a game of skill and chance that can go either way any time, friday night is one example in a long history of " the mighty " don't always get up in competative sport.
I'll await the future lotto numbers to appear in this thread with anticipation.

We can revisit this thread in 5-10 years and see who was right and who was wrong. I'll be happy to be proven wrong but the writings on the wall. If they win 3 or more flags over the next 5-10 years I think I'll be proven right.

BTW the game on Friday was between two clubs who have won 7 flags between them in the past 9 years, so I don't see how that is an argument for anything.

Every loss is a closer to a win :)

It's an arguement that there is no way of knowing what will happen in a unpredictable contest between 2 combatants. In football there is 18 every year.So I don't believe GWS are locks for the next dynasty just because of their talented list.
All these doomsday threads when they haven't not even made a grand final yet.
Some posts in here are like lets cancel footy for next 5-10 years because GWS have already won them.

 Hope we get some opposition.
I expect it'll be fine, but I'm starting to understand how the Hawks won the last three. Some clubs are so easy to intimidate it narrows the field of credible opponents to a manageable level.

I hope the 17 other sides continue to turn up because according to some the next 5-10 years have already been decided.

Of course, they have some of the most talented young players in the country. It's more like a rep side than a footy club though.

that's true. I guess what i wanted to say was that back during the beltings i do not recall players, media predicting greatness, it was more doom and gloom

Well if its a GWS V Sydney GF I really hope the AFL make one of the two teams come up with a clash Guernsey.
Make the GWS wear an all charcoal strip with an orange G or something.

The other day was terrible!!

Not for us it wasn't mustt have been a TV thing. I Wouldn't have a problem with us wearing predominantly orange.

I thought this too. What is the AFL's reasoning behind the dogs having to wear a white clash strip against the Eagles' navy blue and yellow last week?
Our usual strip with white shorts would have been fine.

GWS's jumper has far too much white on the front (clashes against Swans, St Kilda), and the orange really blended into the swans red during play, especially coming in and out of the shade, as a fair portion of the ground was.

Well because of results you'd think that it would be Swans wearing the clash Guernsey.

Easy for Hawthorn supporters to harp on about rising to the challenge and winning without concessions. You lot just won your three premierships just, just in time before that mountain of talent at GWS really came good.

Ooh poor rota.

Didnt your club get massive concessions to start? It pretty much guaranteed success and your a heartland franchise, oops i mean cub

Geez, I'd hoping for more than just a mere three flags in that period.

Haha, my rage feeds you - you're a lunatic. You obviously have no way of discussing the topic without getting all emotional about it. When one runs out of logical arguments they tend to go on non-sensical rants like yours.

Where teams are located is irrelevant when players move all over the country to play the sport they choose to make their profession. A player from California may get drafted to New Orleans or Buffalo. How is that different to moving from Bendigo to Perth or Sydney? In the NFL at least most of the teams are concentrated in the North-East of the country with only 7 (of 32) teams west of Texas and only 9 teams west of Missouri (half the country). Do Seattle get special Acadmies and priority draft selections because they are the only team in the North-West quadrant of the country? Of course not because they are a professional competition not like the Amateur hour Benny Hill crap we put up with down here.

By the way, I've never talked about "raiding" clubs to bring talent home so you may want to check your facts.
Not at all. Read my posts and reread your own.

Mine are amusement at the cowardace garbage shown by you and your fellows. The tin hat brigade.

Your posts are thinking this is a new doomsday and anyone who doesnt believe are crazy. Kind of like the millenium bug nut jobs back in the day.

The emotional ones are you and your ilk.

In context it is still incomprehensible because it has nothing to do with the topic we were discussing. I've never said I don't want the Giants to succeed. I think it is good for the game. However, like Sydney's COLA, the northern Academies, Carlton and other club's third party deals, priority picks, father son selections, rigging of the fixture etc etc etc I hate seeing the sports competition and game I love reduced to "sports entertainment" instead of treated as a professional sports competition. If the Giants win the Grand Final on their own merits I say good luck to them. The problem is the AFL having a clear agenda to ensure success so in their minds they can consolidate the expansion clubs into those markets, no different to McDonalds setting up a new franchise in Hungry Jacks territory.
No it doesnt.

You were going in about whete we are successwise on field.

I said i didnt realise we should of asked you lot about how quick oir success ahould be.

You are an emotional vfl individual. Who has forgotten how every expansion club has started (besides freo).

No point discussing this any further with you.

Anyone disagrees with you and we are blind and emotional. Well sorry champ that is yourself.
Our club is 5. Your club was a failure long before we got here.

Have a look at how your own club regenerated its list.
