100%.

Our major of concern is holding onto him.

If we are top 4 and challenging, and he is in the best 22/23, it will help with retention.

For, there wasn't much between Berry, Allan and Murphy.
It’s great for clubs to back their culture in. Draft the absolute best available at the top of the draft and work to maximise and retain the talent. I like the Freo pick.

Id have Reid (believing he will play an outside link role) before Berry (as the small forward) and then Allan (as the half back- I don’t think he will end up as a starting mid).

It’s all eye of the beholder at the moment though.

B+ at the end of it all.

Helped that once the band 1 compo came in we didn't really have to do much to have a successful period, nothing silly going on unless the right deal dropped. Credit for live trading back into the draft at the right points to nab Boxshall and Dodson.

Hawks
A- for the trade period, Battle for nothing and Barras for 14 and an early 4th round equivalent is good business.
C+ for the draft. Took a higher rated talent than expected at 35 then as expected NGA product so slightly better than expected, where expected rates a C. Also held blues f1/2 so essentially a full draft hand.
Better than Crows and Lions who could have employed AI to draft their players and saved the travel costs!

Gets an A for me.

Get 3 incoming players in the trade period with a reasonable outlay and who potentially fix issues in our best 22, alongside not doing anything stupid in the draft and grabbing a promising midfield prospect.

The only knock is I'd have liked one more pick, but equally, I don't know if there is anyone between 30-60 I'd really want at this point. Tall heavy with a list that doesn't really need more talls.

A

Smith is going to be a gun for many years and will give us some x factor through midfield.
Polkinghorne is a genuine smokey in this years draft. A mixture of Charlie Curnow/Mitch Georgiades. Excellent kick too.
Hofmann is the other I was glad the club selected. Can see all three becoming valuable contributors in Geelong's best 22 in the immediate future.

Geelong rarely needs the early round pick selections to get the most out of the draft. Next year they will focus on another big named free agent to replace Paddy Dangerfield . . . rinse and repeat.

In Wells we trust.

Not necessarily, it’s very likely a bid would’ve come in before their first round pick had they held it.
Yea Right GIF

Didn’t Essendon miss out on a top 10 pick in a strong draft with the Kako situation?
what did we miss out on exactly?

we got a top 10 kid for a bargain price acquired an additional first round pick + got some reasonable enough picks later in a deep draft

if you read the report, you'll summarise that Mick Ablett is an idiot and the wider footballing public called him out on his (piss) poor take to the point he doubled down on night two

Essendon - B

Needed to rebalance the list a bit but only managed to find Stringer a new home and got a pretty moderate return.

Draft: did the best of a tricky situation. Took advantage of the draft’s depth and hopefully picked some pretty good players.

Really just went sensible/mistake free and is setting themselves up for a big 2025 offseason

Dodo is gone. A+

It might reduce the trade period entertainment for everyone else, but that bloke oversaw 20 years of garbage.

An 'over rated' 'matchwinner'.

This gave me a nosebleed.
People talk about Shai like he is in the top 10 players in the competition. He is barely in the top 30. Match winner on his day but give me a spell if you think he is going to be a B&F winner in a premiership year sort of guy

Shai Bolton finished 3rd in 2023 (Richmond finished 13th)
Liam Baker and Jack Graham finished 2nd in 2021 (Tiges won flag)

Hardly domineering forces of players deserving of first round picks yet Tiges did.. Very very good bits of business by Blair Hartley and Co. Definitely won this off season
Wait… you think Bolton isn’t deserving of a first round pick???

A first Round Pick (Freo) + Lachie Schultz (Pies 1st) + 2x Second Rounders (Port 1st) for Bolton, A Round 3 Pick, A first Round Pick (14) and Cooper Simpson.

If Bolton gets us over the line in 2x of those close losses, we play finals. X-Factor is what we lack. He's worth the cost to us

Dodo is gone. A+

I’m happy he’s gone but I’m not grading that as part of it. Just looking strictly at moves.

Rosa went largely uneventful and safe and that’s the thing. Dodo’s mess still isn’t cleaned up. The list is still full of positional logjams and unrealised potential from top picks and well under the cap.

An A+ Off-season would have resolved more of that. Kako was a freebie and everything else was a 2 2nds and then a few late round picks at positions of need to balance the list.

You hope these guys can play and that the draft depth but at pick 50+ it’s more of a bonus then a realistic expectation of if these guys work out.

An A+ off- season involves finding a way to fix those issues and upgrading to some elite talent
