Pick 54 - Hawthorn - Calsher Dear - 195cm 85kgs - Tall Forward

If no one's gonna bid on them, we'll pick up 2J and Cal with these picks. Evan Smith comes in as another developing tall with some good versatility, wouldn't mind seeing him line up at Box Hill as Ramsden, Tucker, and Meek start it sink or swim. Could even start learning as a back, he's got the mindset for it. Also considered Visentini and De La Rue.

Dear and Jiath are locks to come on if they make it this far down. Cal has a great pair of hands in the air and on the deck, and works in contests really well. Tew is slightly surplus to requirement given our half-back stocks, but he's a terrific talent and will be given every chance to earn a spot. He isn't as versatile as his brother, but it's hard to argue that he plays the role really well and with the attacking flair Mitchell is looking for in his defenders.

Really struggled to see anyone else that I liked at this pick. Admittedly I haven’t had a good look at who’s left, but I had a very short list of players that I was willing to consider at these picks, and there were only two left on board by our first pick.

I was planning to take Weatherill at our third pick, but figured with everyone else off the board, I’d push my later preferences up the order.

I like their skill sets.

I don’t like their lack of pace. Especially as both are more likely to play a third tall role at AFL level.

Today’s game relies so much on locking the ball in your forward 50. We saw with Gunston how teams would play through his opponent to rebound the ball out of our forward 50.

If we’re going to play three talls, I’d rather three genuine talls who all offer a marking target down the line, something we lost with McStay moving on, and genuine talls inside 50.

As I mentioned on our board, Weatherill is 6cm taller than Morris and offers the same skill set.
