Taking my four year old
For his first ever AFL game

Pretty confident I’ll be leaving at half time due to his attention span but I gotta start somewhere.

Pretty pumped regardless
I took my four year old to the Adelaide game last year. Got absolutely shit scared by the noise from the goal rush in the first quarter and had to leave early.

Heh Membling thread title says game is 7pm. AEDT, but I think it is actually 7pm AEST (bris), 8pm (syd)

cos AEDT fades the curtains and confuses the cows in QLD.

Well... going by locap time.

If you are not an hour early, you are late.

Gold Coast v Sydney (Nick Malceski Cup)

Saturday, March 18, 8pm at Heritage Bank Stadium

Suns’ burning question: Can Ben King pick up from where he left off?

He kicked 47 goals in 2021 and looked set to add plenty more to his tally in 2022 before an ACL injury ended his season before it even began. If he picks up from where he left off, Ben King could very well be the difference needed for the Suns to make finals for the first time. How quickly he gets back to his devastating peak will be a point of interest for the Suns and the competition as a whole.

Swans’ burning question: Will the demoralising grand final loss prove costly?

Sydney coach John Longmire admits they got plenty wrong in their grand final drubbing at the hands of Geelong. But has the club addressed the issues to move forward in 2023? The Swans were the quiet achievers of last season, as they finished with 16 wins. But any grand final heartbreak still lingering needs to be channelled into this season. “The Swans can’t start the season slow, they need to get off to a good start and get some wins on the board early, then be able to manage their players going forward,” Nick Dal Santo warned to Fox Footy.

Kelli Underwood

didn't we suffer enough watching the grand final

Can think of a bunch of other commentators I'd prefer her over, several of whom are primetime locks.

Fair enough , I think she is the worst by the length of the straight
Dwayne is bearable in comparison

We have the same convo on here every game she commentates, I'd rather Kelli than the likes of other commentators/analysts like BT, JB, Luke Darcy, Dunstall, King, Watson (father and son), Matthews, Hodge etc.

Yeah the discussion occurs because most people seem to think she is god awful.

End of the day it is going to be personal opinion on who the best caller is, but for what it is worth off that list she is a the worst of the callers - BT, JB, Darcy Again just my opinion, but they all do not grate like she does and can actually call the game, do not make all the basic errors she does.

The others are "special comments" which is a different role so imo it is hard to compare , David King is the worst so yeah he can go off the air with Kellie for mine.

I enjoy Jobe in a talking footy style discussion , but as a caller he just comments man he is a bit obvious , but yeah he has a good voice.

But the rest all provide great insights so you seem kind of crazy to me, but again it's an individual preference .

Really?
BT gets at me. However he's not going anywhere.
JB has got better. Don't mind.
Darcy is a biased moron.
Dunstall is OK IMO. He's blunt. Though correct.
King is fine.
Watson are Vanilla and biased.
Mathews is fighting someone in the corridor.
Hodge can offer something. Every 4th Saturday.

I hope we win just so I don't have to hear about the hangover from the awful grand final loss.

Feel out of tune with footy full stop now the pre season is basically a hit and giggle.

I don't care about the voice that much. There's other annoying voices to me that people don't complain about.

My reasons vary but that list contains people who can't keep their buffoonery or egos in check, think yelling or generic exclamations are commentary, portray as the best experts but have little knowledge outside their pet clubs/state, have been past it for years (Matthews), or can gtfo as people (Hodge, Carey).

Thats two too many commentators.

Kelli and Nick DS in studio.

The rest calling the game IMO.

Yep all fair points.

The modern trend seems to be more is better , both in terms of packing the box with voices and then all speaking as much as possible and with increased volume to create excitement.

I would say they also try to replicate some of the stuff that worked on radio by brining those callers across and it doesn't translate.

Also the way players roll out of a career in footy straight into the media now is annoying, being a good player doesn't make you a good media personality .

Bring back the days of say two callers for friday night - eg bruce robbo and they had what healy as special comments and dipper on the boundary

Healy or his equivalent only added something as needed .

Less is more imo.

As for Carey yeah ok that's one i'd our way behind Kellie Underwood, not only is he not a good commentator , he 100% is all about himself spot on , plus cmon how many chances does this piece of shit get

Dwayne commentating sucks the game dry for me. His in play commentating is quite good but the second he starts making special comments or tries to analyse/translate tactics or the state of play, you'd think he's never played the game in his life. Lacks depth, basic, uninsightful and cliche. Only calls what he's seeing and has no idea why it's happening, the logical point always goes flying over his head. Grinding my ears on SEN as we speak.
