You've got to think of it like this.

1/ If you were Reid, what would you want? $15-20 million over 10 years.
2/ If Reid was ours. What would we want.

He would take 3 first rounders and someone like Holmes. If he decides to come back to Vic, someone will have to sell the farm.
It would be the biggest trade in history. He's better off staying where he is.
Reid would be crazy to accept $15m over 10 years. If I were advising him I would recommend seeking a 4-5 year deal for enough money to set you up for life (something like $10m over 5 years). Then truly cash in at age 27-28 (ie. his absolute prime years) when he could break the bank as a free agent.

10 year deals for someone of his age are not in the players best interest.

I think "and someone" relies on the someone wanting to go. You never have to lose a player that wants to stay with you.

Not a chance a trade would cost that much if OOC.

We have no idea if he wants to be in WA or not... He might hate it there... In that case, why would he be better off staying?

I think Geelong being the "meeting club" might be because it sends shivers up the spines of the current club.

Successful, well run club with a history of getting players they want but not paying overs to do it.

The destination is enticing for the player and they're not going to get some massive trade haul back like they might from another club.

Geelong would be the club you would least want to deal with, I reckon

“He’s one of the best players in the league, so it’s pretty straightforward that our recruiting team are doing a great job. That’s what everyone gets cut up about; that we’re targeting great players, and we’ve targeted them in the past and ended up getting them,” Gryan Miers told reporters on Wednesday.

“They (the recruiting team) will keep doing that job and that is their job to do; to target the best. I actually don’t know if we’re going for him (Rowell), but if we are, then good luck to him, good luck to us that if it happens.

Agree. Three first rounders and Holmes is considerably more than any player has been traded for in the history of the game.

Murdoch played 108 games for Geelong (122 in total) after being drafted at pick 48.

Linc has played over 150 games after being drafted at pick 66.

They are massive draft successes.

Linc played 29 games for us and we swapped him, pick 55 & 59 for Brisbane's pick 43 & 62. He was a trade success for Brisbane, not a draft success for us and certainly not a 'massive' draft success.

It was also a trade success for us as we then traded pick 62 to Sydney for Rohan and he played a pretty important role for us back in 2022

Yes, but going back to the original point, GC Suns diluted the draft pool and we had very limited draft success over that time.

In 2010 GCS had 7 pre-listings, 5 zone selections and 8 first round picks. GWS had 12 underage selections and 7 zone selections.

The following year GWS had 7 pre-listings, 2 zone selections, 2 concessional selections, and 11 first round picks.

That's 53 players removed over two drafts. Of course that's going to impact our draft success. None of the players mentioned (GHS, Murdoch, Kersten, etc.) would get a game in our current side, save for maybe McCarthy.

Although they both have the tools, it appears Conway’s body is not capable of withstanding AFL (its been some years now of repeated breaking down), and Clarke seems to get knocked of the ball too easily inside (quite a bit smaller than the monsters these days), and he does not have elite outside skills. So for different reasons, both are shaping up as not busts, but not hits - and unlikely to be regular senior players.
lol, firstly spell the guy's name correctly. It's really not that hard.

Secondly, 16 games for a 20 year old, including 15 in his second season is a good return. Vast improvement last year, but not everyone is a Selwood. I expect he'll improve again this year, and we can assess where he fits in our future squad. We could have a good 100+ game midfielder or a very good 200+ game midfielder. He's no bust.

Conway is into his fourth season. Gawn, not for any obvious similarities in the way they play the game, meandered for five seasons before he broke out in his sixth. Ruckmen take time. Geelong's S & C team have more successes than failures when it comes to injury prone kids being bulletproofed, excepting for the extreme examples of Matt Egan, Dan Menzel, Nakia Cockatoo. Conway will breakout next year. Watch this space.

My tolerance for buffoons who post either to troll or who have absolutely no understanding of how a young kid develops is very thin. This is garbage.

Please remember to stick with discussing the topic and refrain from crossing that line into personal swipes

We don't all need to agree, and fair to say that majority of the time we don't but that doesn't mean it's ok to cross into personal attack territory

3 first rounders and Holmes...jeez louise. There's hyperbole, then there's this. There's a poll on the main board of players that clubs would give up a Top 3 pick for...Reid is one...Holmes is another. If he became OOC, it'd be 1 first and maybe some other picks, and Holmes...which would put him in Chris Judd territory.

3 firsts and Holmes is the most f*cking absurd thing I've ever heard, lol. He's a goddamn B + F winner at 22 who's only scratched the surface of his talent. Reid could be generational, but Holmes is no B grader either.

To be quite honest, I wouldn't even do Max for Harley in a straight swap, at this point in time. His contract is more friendly. He's one of the nicest people ever, and doesn't have that touch of arrogance that Reid has. He's also achieved something, whereas Reid is still prospective talent. It's just insane to even consider that Holmes would be worth so little that we'd have to attach three first rounders to him.

The success of any draft pick is how good the career they have compares to other players drafted at or near that position.

In that context he was absolutely a massive draft success.

Whether or not we squandered that success by trading is another matter entirely. Which is why I specifically said that he was a “draft success”.

Notwithstanding any of that, the chances of getting any contribution at all out of a 66th pick is remote. The 29 games he played for Geelong would be far greater than what could reasonably be expected of any pick 66. 29 games out of pick 66 would also be considered a draft success.

For comparison, if Lawson Humphries never played another game for Geelong, the 11 games he has played so far would be considered a draft success for a player picked at pick 63.
