Here's 2024 Provisional AFL Draft Order

Cheers to Lore for their hard work in setting this up, and making it available for all users on BF to use and keep track of the picks ahead of the upcoming draft - and please practice patience grasshoppers if it's not updated in the immediate aftermath of completed trade

I'll also sticky this post to ensure it's easily accessible for discussion of our hypothetical trader

Also,

2024 Draft and Trade Period Key Dates

Oct 17 to Nov 8: Pick swap window
Nov 1 to Nov 8: Delisted free agency period
Nov 20-21: Telstra AFL Draft
Nov 22: Telstra Pre-Season Draft and Rookie Draft

I like the look of Jobe Shanahan.

Not sure if we would be able to get a back into the draft early enough to snag him… could be borderline a chance if he is someone we are keen on.

Shanahan + Neale young key forwards.

SDK + COS young key backs.

Conway + Edwards young rucks.

We’d all of a sudden look reasonably set for key position players all over the ground if we could get Shanahan.

I wonder if ess will try to trade back in for him after the kako bid.

If we are to use our F1 to trade up what are our targets for a trade? My take is
Richmond (maybe our F1 plus 45 for 18),
Essendon (F1 for 28, 31 or 40) or
Brisbane (F1 for 27, 34).
Any of those have legs?

Depends who we want and if they are there.
I think rich will keep 18. We might be able to do 20 or 23 for 45 and F1 type thing.
Brisbane don't have the points to trade out.
The problem with ess is they won't do a trade until kako is bid.
I still think we trade our future 1st with Sydney for 19 or 22 if we do it.

Really hope we don’t get duped into trading a Future First for a pick in the late 20s.

Everyone has draft fever but no matter how much of a super draft this is that’s a ridiculous premium. If we get a pick around 20-21 then fine but after that forget it.

The time to trade picks like that was in the trade period (which we couldn't bc of the Smith stalemate) if we do it now on the night then factor that into the Bailey Smith trade. All of a sudden it looks pretty grim

Is Dattoli someone we'd look at if he slid? He looks like a high impact, punish the opposition type... Small forwards are not a high priority though for us... Although I think he can play mid.

I’ve seen a fair bit of Dattoli as my nephew has played footy with him for years. I’ll be interested to see how his game translates to AFL. He’s tough, and has a good footy brain. Very driven. His Dad has pushed him since he was a young kid. But I just wonder whether he has the athletic profile to make it.

what makes people think that Reid wants to come to Geelong?

also would you trade
  • Humphries and Edwards and our future first for him? or possibly
  • Holmes, Humphries and our future first
I would not take any of these.
In those scenarios you're essentially listing 22 year old B&F and AA squad member Max Holmes and raw ruckman picked in the thirties Mitch Edwards as equal assets.

The answer is no, though. Would rather trade picks for years in advance than entertain Holmes AND Humphries for Reid.

The guy is a freak, but we want to have a team ready to be taken to another level if he was to arrive, not a one man band ala Judd at Carlton.

Cal linked us to

Dotson SA 203cm Ruck
Bowman SA 186cm Fwd
J Ough Tall Mid from Rebels - 194cm
H Boxshall Tall Mid 188cm WA
L Jacques HBF 184 cm Falcons Capt
L Voss tall Defender 199cm Dragons
Sam Davidson VFL
Will Hoare VFL 197cm tall defender Essendon/Pascoe Vale
Riley Bice VFL 185cm Werribee defender
Charlie Nicolls 197cm SA key fwd
Charlie McCartin - local footy Lorne 25 year old defender. Brother of Tom and Paddy

The Age said we had an interest in speedy onballer Unwin from the rebels and Trainor

Bowman looks like another who would be handy…

HSun … mentions a couple that Cal mentions ..so does that make those name more likely….?

Alex Dodson
Sam Davidson
Charlie Nicholls
Lachie Jaques

and a few that are different...Charlie Rowe, Patrick Said, Lucca Grego..

It seems a big range of names that we might be interested in…. I guess if you throw enough darts sooner or later you hit the bullseye..

Its all just a talking point but the truth is player for player trades are rare now. Im not sure how many there were this year but it would not be many. Players have a strong say in where they go and it rarely lines up both ways.

Its seems more likely that if Geelong were to trade for a player of Reid’s level and age.. we would have to find a truck load of picks..which means knowing he woudl want to move a fair way out..

Just went back and had a look at Nicholls… moves well and has a nice pair of hands…but I think Josh Walker was a better kick than him. The ball drop is a football version of Ipecac syrup ..Id think he would have to improve his kicking out of sight to make it as a a forward.. probably ends up as a intercepting backman..

Not just kicking but he also looks like a ordinary footballer..... no thanks.

Twomey seems to be hinting it but this is one year even he will struggle to predict because of how even the draft is.

We have been linked to several names so..if he gets one right he may be doing well.

By the time the draft is into the third round ..I have visions of a Ninja guys throwing little star things at a list of name on the wall..…

We will be looking back in a couple asking how he got to the the rookie draft. I guess that not unusual…a few were grumbling about Hump by the end of the year

Agree with the draft fever mentality, one needs to be careful but there can be the odd exceptions if there is a player that a club recruiter has high expectations with unexposed potential, thus rating him far greater than his current draft value by all and sundry. And obviously, those players do exist but they are rare with Sydney in particular being a club that's done exceptionally well landing some excellent footballers from bargain basement pics..... Cats aren't too bad either!

Linked to everyone ..everywhere ..and then we take a kid in our VFL system ..

I reckon Herbert will last until the rookie draft.
We will need go ND on either henderson or davidson if we want them though. And I wonder what we do with Blakiston sounds like saints are keen.

I don't think Holmes is an option. There are just players you do not trade under any circumstances. Max Holmes is now in that category.

I think it's a nice thought to think we can get Reid, but to give up a potential great of our club in Lawson - and also an amazing story, Indigenous kid and seemingly a lovely, lovely person, is wrapped in horrendous risk.

Just being a little facetious … Id have thought the two VFL GF sides… would have a few options better than on our list. Add Davidson Hoare etc … I think if we take anyone from our VFL it would have to be as a rookie.

Blackiston Saints? I thought they were interested in the SA ruck that won the medal Harry Boyd..

If Luke Trainor falls to late 20s l would absolutely be offering F1 for him should develop into a very good player and perfect replacement for Stewart or Kolo

As long as we don’t pick a 190cm plus mid with our picks (needle in a haystack) these kids look good at junior level due to physical attributes but few become good AFL players

But at the end of the day it’s a massive raffle and no one has any idea where players will go. Clubs are getting really cagey and keeping things very close to their chest.

Yeah I agree anyone like Herbert is a rookie or ssp. Davidson and hoare have enough interest to go ND.
Boyd-who I was suggesting earlier in the year we target for the MSD, and Blakiston are essentially the same age so I doubt the saints take both but they probably want one. Would we take the other?

I think most would to do that trade if it means Reid plays in the hoops.

We're talking about a generational talent versus future 250 gamers.
That would be a foolish trade. The reason that Geelong is the most successful club in the AFL over the last 20 years is because they have the best culture not necessarily the best players. In AFL a generational talent like Reid is still only one player and that will never overcome the synergies of 22 committed team players who are thriving in a growth environment. Geelong quite deliberately draft players of great character and are very loyal to them. If you start trading talented players of great character like Humphries who want to be at the club, then that will create a small crack in your elite culture that eventually becomes a chasm and before you know it you will be back in the pack with the other mundane clubs

His concussion issues are a massive concern. I’d be more willing to take a risk with Hotton off an ACL.

Interestingly no Gerryn mentioned at all in cals phantom draft. Not mentioned in the club post 30 breakdown. Angus Clarke only features in the Sydney write up and yet 19, or 22 would seem too early.

The players I’m most keen on are likely to fall between 24 and 35. Players like Harrison Oliver and James Barrat who are tough, competitive and defensively minded. Trainors concussion history is a risk, but he is also the only player in this range who has top 10 upside.

if we aren’t able to trade up, I’m hopeful we add a tall fwd option, Gerryn sims stumf burmiester. Maybe one vfl prospect like Davidson or nice. And then one nice Smokey no one has heard of that we can preemptively claim will be another Dempsey!

Well said. Makes me sick seeing how much hero worshipping, as opposed to common sense and club-supporting goes on here at times. No, an individual player doesn’t make that much difference we have to wreck the team to get him in.
