Ask and we'll try our best to assist - so here's 2024 Provisional AFL Draft Order

As normal, would like to acknowledge & thank Lore for creating this, keeping it up to date and making it available for all users on BF to use and keep track of the picks ahead of the upcoming draft

I'll also sticky this post to ensure it's easily accessible for discussion of our hypothetical trader

Also,

2024 Free Agency Period

Free Agency Closes: Friday October 11 at 5.00pm

Continental Tyres AFL Trade Period

Surely that means Rohan is finishing up?
Can't see us going for Martin with basically 8 forwards already locked in.

Neale
Jezza
Stengle
Close
Miers
Dempsey
Mannagh
O Henry

Martin would be number 9.
Basically VFL bound unless we have injuries.

Unless we plan to play Dempsey wing full time?
I really think Dempsey & Miers can be full time wings who push forward and kick goals. Both have great tanks and generally use the ball well.
But I also think Danger should play more minutes forward the next 2 years. Perhaps he starts at centre bounces and drifts forward.

Think it was Neil Balme as Footy boss said that clubs either have too few rucks or too many. No inbetween.

Such a niche list spot. If we recruit a other one we likely have too many.
I think the too many argument is also underpinned by how many chop outs we can give a Conway in game. SDK, Blitz, Neale can all take ruck minutes while Conway floats back as a defensive intercept or sneaks forward to find an aerial outmatch. You can play him and keep load off him.

I fully expect the cats to trade 1st rounder for Smith, plus some picks swaps for next year.

With the draft said to be even and deep this year, I hope we take 6-7 selections in the 30-60 area.

Definitely think we will be keen on local lads Jacques and Ivisic.

I think ivisic could be a late riser so not sure we get him given we wont be picking til the 3rd round.

This is completely the wrong way to look at it.

Rucks are the most specialised role in the sport. You can’t stack your list with them as they can’t play other roles (generally).

Once you have locked in list spots with personnel you limit yourself to going beyond it. If you do, you forgo a mid or a KPP or utility that likely has much more value and use.

You can disagree that the capacity we have is sufficient but you can’t ignore the commitment the club is making to that capacity and the limit that places on adding another ruck.

I'm not ignoring the commitment.
I'm saying it will fail now for the same reason it failed in 2012 (unless de koning is willing to be turned into a good ruck and we can do it) because we have too many rucks on the list that are either too old or too young and have injury question marks. We may have 5 or 6 but we have none who are durable or in the middle age bracket which is where we need a ruck.

The mindset you are talking about is too short term and not long term.
As I said in 2012 (you can go back to my posts then) the mindset should be add a ruck who is a clear upgrade on what you have and if that creates too many (ie i understand what you are saying re the club not wanting more than 5 or so on a list of 44) then you retire or trade a couple out either in that year or 12 months later (ie what we did in 2013). The current example would be you retire stanley now, phase out blicavs (which is about to happen anyway) and trade a ruck in.
After 2012 we ended up doing that anyway (ie hmac retired, west was traded and the rest were crocked by injury) so we would not have had too many long term.
Look ahead to 2027-are stanley or blicavs going to be here? Absolutely not
Will furphy be here-probably not.
Conway would be less than 50 % chance with his injury record and edwards is unknown.

So do we have room for a ruck? Yes we absolutely do providing he's good enough to play seniors.

I really think we should be looking for a ruckman.

I think I heard on SEN that Ivan Soldo might be looking for somewhere else?

I really don't pay much attention to who is available from other clubs or whether they're pursuing - but it's clear we need a decent person in there.

There have been rumours Soldo wants back to Victoria but Port may want more than hes worth (given what they paid)

All the more credit to him. We have to interpret them giving him another contract as both an endorsement of his body to stand up to it and a lack of viable alternative options.

The optimistic view is the former, where Ceglar ended up in his final year (where he could barely play 2 games in a row even in the vfl because his leg was cooked) makes me think it's more likely the latter is whats driving it and we will get the same outcome.

Duncan and Stanley should be thanked and moved on
Rohan with all his concussion concerns should be offered a wojo type role as a line breaking link man in defence. Our weakness is pace and he would up the ante.
Having Zuthrie, Humphries, Rohan, Stewart, Dekonning as defenders would drastically change our look from defence with speed
Henry and Kolo as the generals. Bews as a backup.
Hawkins, Tuohy, Stanley, Duncan should be gone with Cam Guthrie being told if he had another year of injury in 2025 he will need to be Menzelled.
Smith will take some pressure from Holmes who provides all of our run from the middle. Holmes is currently carrying us on his back
I truly hope Martin and Stengle develop a connection. Could be fun to watch
Removing Stanley would force our hand to find a new direction. It is past time for this to occur
Atkins does all of our tough work so is irreplaceable in the current squad
Give Neale some more vfl time to work on versatility. He has the tools but queen Mary turning circle
Forget Sentiment, we need forward thinking
Kolo Dekonning Zuthrie
Rohan Henry Humphries
Miers Stewart Dempsey
Close Cameron Martin
Stengle Danger Henry
Conway Holmes Smith
Blicavs Bowes Bruhn Mannagh Atkins
Em Neale C. Guthrie Clark Bryan, Bews, Clohesy, Knevitt, Mullin, O'Connor, O'Sullivan draftees

Rebuild with a twist!
Only power runners and Mr all positions retained as veterans

Honestly, you don't need a champion ruckman like Gawn or Grundy in your side to win Premierships. You just need a guy who can compete and hopefully break even on the day with the opposition's (maybe much more celebrated) ruckman. Stanley has done this in the past for us. I think Conway could do it in the future. Even SDK might prove to be the guy we need. But using early picks to get a ruckman (guys who can take 3-4 years to develop) is a waste of a pick, IMO. I think Geelong's approach of seeing if they can snag a guy via a trade who has already been in the system a few years is probably the best approach. That's just my opinion.

So why aren't they doing that
Maybe they see Conway and SDK as their main ruckmen after Stanley retires and don't see it as a priority at this stage. Getting a guy via the Rookie draft is a good option as well. But there is a lot to play out this year, so we'll just have to wait and see.

I would not be investing any salary cap or draft capital in the ruck position.

With COS progressing nicely, I expect SDK to spend summer rucking and he will be no 1.

Hopefully a fit again Conway and Edwards as a long term option.

What we probably need is a battering ram in case of emergency. Club will know if Furphy is capable of that, if not, bring an experienced guy in very cheap.

I don't want to give Duncan another year contract, and I think majority would be in the same opinion... But would there be a option would the club put him on the rookie list?

SDK is a fascinating decision. He's right at that point where he should be ready to explode as a player. But he doesn't look that great in defence and ruck seemed to allow him to show his ground level skills more.

Assuming we keep him I'd aim to play him as our number 1 ruck. Get some games in to Conway so you don't overload him but give him the freedom to get around the ground and dominate in the air and on the ground.

But is he mentally invested in that move? There's a chance trading him could be the best move for all involved or it could be a terrible waste.

I think long term steweart need to go back down back and maybe go in the middle if he getting tagged out only. SDK also need to go back full time to man a key defensive spot, he doesnt have the aggression as his brother to play ruck imo.

rohan and c.gurhrie are done as a footballer unfortunately.

big year for clark, mullin and sdk next year. those two stands out as someone that should have kicked on and be a clear best 22.

Delist and redraft

I remember listening to Krock pre-match earlier this year and I think it was Lonergan(?) talking - someone will correct me if I'm wrong, and he suggested that a team like North could offer Duncan a multi year deal transitioning into a coaching role

I'd love to see Duncan retire as a one club player, but if a team was to offer a deal like that, he'd be stupid not to take it

Pick 7 and a large sweetener. Even then we wouldnt do it. Realistically we would want 12 months to plan and trade in a quality kpd or ruck to replace him its too late in the piece to do it now. Revisit next year.

I must’ve been watching different games to you then, didn’t look like it at VFL level let alone AFL.
In the first half of the season he was the only way we stayed in games, the rest of the backline was poor. His intercept marking and kicking from the back drove the team forward.
Hey we all see the game differently but I liked what I saw. If players like him and Foster get delisted I’m not going to be too upset. I just think they’ve shown some things to work with and as key position players I’d like to see where they go with another year of development.
