It doesn't make much sense
It reads like when Preuss left North to go to Melbourne - goes from a team where he's behind Goldstein in the pecking order to being behind Gawn; just seemed like a guy who was happy to play VFL while earning an AFL salary

With Grundy, does he not want to be the #1 option anymore or something, as Melbourne just seems the worse fit for him

Seems strange if he wants to get back to his AA best that he would go to a club where he cant be no 1 ruck.
I also dont understand from.melbs perspective why they would want to tie up that much cap in 2 rucks when their fwd line is pox.

Bad trade for both parties imo.

I’d assume that with Melb in their window, and losing Jackson that they see Grundy as a similar type. Allows Gawn to play forward more often at this stage of his career. Time will tell whether it’s a good move.

Grundy has a few interests in Melbourne. Geelong was attractive as a club but the location wasn’t.

I’m laying low on that. Stuck my head up a few times in here and passed on info shared with me, then the keyboard warriors stuck it to me.

Let’s just say the Grundy matter will be clearer now that Melb are out. It’s between us and them, and the longer it goes I think we’re better placed if he doesn’t now name Melb. But as we saw with Hopper, these deals take lots of twists and turns.

But god help you if you pass on what you’re told and we don’t get a deal done.

Stephens need to reach 50 games. The kid can play. The reality is he hasn't played much football in the last 4 years.

Give him time.

Atkins nearly 27 and 80 games... Zac Guth at 24 and 52 games

add the covid period... I think every kid in this period has to be given a little time. Holmes is a bonus. We are still at least 2 years away from knowing with CS.

No Hooper is good for both imo. but if the right mature is available we would probably look at it.

Of course they can all fail. Much like bringing in mature players. .. and mature player come in with a big drain on cap.

My bet is the play Van Rooyen in the forwardline next year... but I wonder if the started with the idea the Gawn could play forward. He has found its a little harder this year.

would rather just play Neale in the ruck or Conway next year

I doubt they trade him for P46 but if you could add a player like Meek for P46 is a free hit for mine

Conway and Neale could go past him or they could have years that question their place on the list. They are still young. Injuries could happen.

Its taken ten years to work out that we need rucks and an attacking game plan.

Jackson is a roving blicavs lite though (player style not ability)...grundy is a ruck as is gawn..neither of them has really shown any form as a forward...so i dont see the fit.

Agree with the last bit though..guys that like the country life like jezza we are a destination club but guys who prefer to live inner city we are not..grundy sounds like hes in the latter group. Hes really putting his off field life before his career in that case as melbourne is not a good on field move for him.

Would be a poor result imo. I'm convinced we need a ready-made mid in his prime during this trade period. If it's not Hopper it needs to be someone else, even if it means paying a little bit overs.
None are now available. Would rather not overspend and wait until 2023 and reassess, can’t acquire what isn’t an option.

Parish probably the only notable 2023 free agent.

Depends what you mean by dependable ruckman. I'm not against it but I don't think it changes much

Is there a better option you have in mind?

Perhaps if Frank wants to go to Port we could ask about Sam Hayes but he is a unknown as well 7 game at 23 yo.

Id have thought he would be ideal. perfect age and experience, with a low impact on our cap. Has afl form to judge him on. Ready to see if he has the game to be#1

We don't know for certain that none are available. It may be the case that there's players out there that seem unavailable but actually are available "for the right price". I'd be happy to pay overs for someone like Dunkley or Parish (for example) it if helps us continue to push for premierships. If we wait until post-2023 to try to prise them out of their clubs it may be too late for us as a whole bunch of players currently performing at a high level may be past it.

I want us continuing to top up while Jez is still in his prime. Just go for broke trying for the flag. Our midfield has been competitive enough this year (otherwise we wouldn't be in the position we're currently in) but I think everyone would agree that even though our mids have been decent, it's still clearly our weakest line, and even if our internal options in that area (Stephens, Knevitt, etc) work out, none of them will be ready to improve us next year, so I think we have to be looking for outside solutions to elevate our personnel through the middle of the ground.

The only thing I have in mind is to run Stanley and Ceglar into the ground until their shambling corpses get overtaken by Conway and Neale

Yet here we are, sitting pretty, with the same ruck we’ve had for the last ten years.

The more things change...the more they stay the same ..?

Draft a ruck, trade one in, Stanley has his best year ever ..... but come finals time has a one of his. bad Stanleys ... and we are into flip a coin to see who plays

I cant remember...did we ever go into a finals game under Thompson not having two rucks in the side?
