They were clearly desparate to keep him at the time, and so panicked with a big contract. The smart move would have been to let him go, reap the draft reward and put that noose around another club's neck, but they mostly likely couldn't at the time. Cox could not have been a #1 ruck and Cameron had only come over from Sydney at the end of 2019, so probably wasn't ready to shoulder the load. Collingwood scraped into the 8 in 2020 too, and Bucks was starting to feel the pressure.

Now Cameron has come on to be an acceptable option, they're willing to jettison Grundy and get that contract off the books. New list manager didn't make that contract either, and probably hates being hamstrung by it. The Daicos boys will need raises soon, they had to pay up to keep Moore, Crisp and Maynard likely getting raises too. Getting rid of him solves a lot of problems for them.
Still doesn't make sense. Dominant ruckmen are like hens teeth as we know all too well. Grundy and Gawn were the standout best two in the competition and if they needed to shed cap then get rid of Moore, key backs are easier to find or cover than ruckmen. Cameron is ok but never going to hit the heights Grundy has. There is more to this than shedding cap.

Close is from SA. Could be him.

They might chase close but hes contracted (although will need a senior list elevation now and a pay bump to ward them off in 12 months).

Would be more likely they are after williams who is much more gettable.

There’s also the fact that a flag will change some perspectives on the desire to go on.

Agreed.

We wouldnt push stanley out (not in his current form) but no one knows how his body is going behind the scenes and if either for body or desire (ie some guys decide to finish on a high if we win the flag) reasons he decides to retire then in that scenario we would look to bring in a ruck as our window is now and conway isnt quite ready yet.

I think its as simple as they want to run with cameron as a cheaper ruck and use the $ to bolster other areas (mids like taranto and their average fwd line) and they made that call a few months ago when they gave cameron a 3 year deal. That said i dont think they will dump grundy for nothing or the members will riot-if they dont get a reasonable offer that allows them to save face they will keep him and try again in 12 months.

Zane Williams sounds a good possibility
  • picked up in the mid-season draft, so may well be out of contract come October
  • played for Woodville-West Torrens when drafted
  • 2-years for a fringe player seems a good deal for someone who may not get a contract extension
  • maybe Port had their eye on him for this year's ND
Correct - and he should take it.

And you know what? Maybe there is. It's probably pretty likely. Maybe our medicos do their due diligence and find something nasty that Collingwood is trying to hide. Maybe there's a personal conflict with someone - who knows?

With a big club like Collingwood, I imagine there are so many influences on particular decisions. For example, it's not so easy to just "get rid of Moore" - the guy is the son of a dual Brownlow-winning Hall of Famer and was a superstar on the rise in 2020. The board and members would have rioted if they'd made a cold call on that front. Roughead was also nearing the end - much easier to skate with an unsteady ruck division than be light on for KPDs. Think of how precarious our situation is with SDK - without Blitz we'd be ****ed if he went down. There's so many other holes on their list that they'd want to fix as well, like their forward line.

All that in mind, shedding cap is by far the most obvious reason to get rid of him.

We will probably only offer williams 1 more year as a rookie whereas if port offers him 2 years and a senior list spot (plus the chance of more regular gametime) i agree he should take it.

Just on Grundy. Why are Collingwood so keen to get rid of the guy who was in the best one or two rucks in the comp a couple of years ago? A guy they signed to a 7 year deal at nearly $1m a year. Two years later they want him gone to the extent they are willing to pay $300k a year of his salary. Cameron is ok but no where near Grundy and Cox is never going to be a dominant ruck. He'll be 29 at the start of next season and that means we'd have him until he's 34. Doesn't make any sense unless there are very significant issues either injury or attitude wise. Do we really want a 29 year old who played 6 games this year for 5 years at $600-700k a year?
More red flags than Moscow in October

This is exactly why going after Grundy doesn't make much sense. He probably makes us a bit better for a few years but we would be paying through the nose, giving up picks and limiting the development of our younger rucks.

Stanley is now a solid ruck and his body seems good. I'm more worried about getting experience into Conway than going after Grundy. If we play our cards right we could nurse Stanley through a couple more years of good footy while getting plenty of games into Conway so the transition is hopefully smooth when it happens.
do you think conway has a grundy level ceiling?

Williams is at least a year off playing AFL, assuming he can reach that level. Evans has played AFL and is ready to go as a small forward. I would think Evans is the target.

Who else is SA?
Wells has a habit of picking SA blokes because...
a) No one pays too much attention to SA outside of SANFL ( Enright, Close)
b) Players can't wait to leave so the go home factor is low.
Close played in and won a premiership in the SANFL.
Against Port as well, so they should have been well aware of what he was capable of too.

Grundy is now expendable to them.

Pies just finished top 4 without him and want to bring in Taranto, Bobby Hill, McStay + probably keep DeGoey.

Cox and Cameron are getting the job done at a much cheaper clip.

They simply can't get/keep them all and Grundy has the worst contract + is the most expendable.

It's really that simple.

If we managed to land Grundy it would mean an awkward list for a season with too many rucks. But it would be worth it in the long term.

Both Ceglar and Stanley may retire at the end of next season. Conway hasn’t played yet and will need support.
Even Blicavs is 31 and can’t play forever.

Adding Hopper and Grundy after winning the flag would be a superb combination.

I highly doubt a bloke we picked up in a mid season draft is the one that’s making headlines as Hinkley’s man he’s chasing from Geelong lol. 99.9% of people haven’t even heard of him. Makes much more sense that they’re chasing Close or even Evans

From Port's perspective this makes no sense, why would they pay a premium for such a speculative pick

Is there any guarantee Ceglar stays on?? He's only signed for this season, right?

Let's say Cegs does go and then we get rid of Tsap.

Bring in Grundy and we have Grundy #1, Stanley as a backup in case of injury, Conway developing and Blitz as a pinch hitter. Seems like the perfect situation to me.

Stephen Rowe of fiveAA here in Adl said earlier in the week that PA are into a cat's small fwd with a 2 yr deal on the table. Miers the likely choice ? Or would it be Evans or the lad we got from wwt in the sanfl, Williams. Apparently "Hinkley is very keen on getting him over" Rowe's words were.

I'll bet anyone here Close or Miers won't leave.
