Still doesn't make sense. Dominant ruckmen are like hens teeth as we know all too well. Grundy and Gawn were the standout best two in the competition and if they needed to shed cap then get rid of Moore, key backs are easier to find or cover than ruckmen. Cameron is ok but never going to hit the heights Grundy has. There is more to this than shedding cap. They were clearly desparate to keep him at the time, and so panicked with a big contract. The smart move would have been to let him go, reap the draft reward and put that noose around another club's neck, but they mostly likely couldn't at the time. Cox could not have been a #1 ruck and Cameron had only come over from Sydney at the end of 2019, so probably wasn't ready to shoulder the load. Collingwood scraped into the 8 in 2020 too, and Bucks was starting to feel the pressure.
Now Cameron has come on to be an acceptable option, they're willing to jettison Grundy and get that contract off the books. New list manager didn't make that contract either, and probably hates being hamstrung by it. The Daicos boys will need raises soon, they had to pay up to keep Moore, Crisp and Maynard likely getting raises too. Getting rid of him solves a lot of problems for them.
Close is from SA. Could be him.
There’s also the fact that a flag will change some perspectives on the desire to go on.

Correct - and he should take it.Zane Williams sounds a good possibility
- picked up in the mid-season draft, so may well be out of contract come October
- played for Woodville-West Torrens when drafted
- 2-years for a fringe player seems a good deal for someone who may not get a contract extension
- maybe Port had their eye on him for this year's ND
And you know what? Maybe there is. It's probably pretty likely. Maybe our medicos do their due diligence and find something nasty that Collingwood is trying to hide. Maybe there's a personal conflict with someone - who knows?Still doesn't make sense. Dominant ruckmen are like hens teeth as we know all too well. Maybe, depends on the pick. I can't see us getting a better player on the flipside of it but maybe one who is positionally closer to b22If Evans does go, it solves a list spot issue with some actual value coming the other way.
More red flags than Moscow in OctoberJust on Grundy. Why are Collingwood so keen to get rid of the guy who was in the best one or two rucks in the comp a couple of years ago? A guy they signed to a 7 year deal at nearly $1m a year. Two years later they want him gone to the extent they are willing to pay $300k a year of his salary. Cameron is ok but no where near Grundy and Cox is never going to be a dominant ruck. He'll be 29 at the start of next season and that means we'd have him until he's 34. Doesn't make any sense unless there are very significant issues either injury or attitude wise. Do we really want a 29 year old who played 6 games this year for 5 years at $600-700k a year?
It might be less about the pick than giving us another spot for a trade, e.g. giving us room for Bruhn or (?) Henry.Maybe, depends on the pick. I can't see us getting a better player on the flipside of it but maybe one who is positionally closer to b22
do you think conway has a grundy level ceiling? This is exactly why going after Grundy doesn't make much sense. He probably makes us a bit better for a few years but we would be paying through the nose, giving up picks and limiting the development of our younger rucks.
Stanley is now a solid ruck and his body seems good. I'm more worried about getting experience into Conway than going after Grundy. If we play our cards right we could nurse Stanley through a couple more years of good footy while getting plenty of games into Conway so the transition is hopefully smooth when it happens.
Williams is at least a year off playing AFL, assuming he can reach that level. Evans has played AFL and is ready to go as a small forward. I would think Evans is the target. They might chase close but hes contracted (although will need a senior list elevation now and a pay bump to ward them off in 12 months).
Would be more likely they are after williams who is much more gettable.
Close played in and won a premiership in the SANFL.Who else is SA?
Wells has a habit of picking SA blokes because...
a) No one pays too much attention to SA outside of SANFL ( Enright, Close)
b) Players can't wait to leave so the go home factor is low.

I was thinking that maybe sometime during the year they have had a conversation, explored possibilities. If Stanley retires he'll be the one agreeing to it.
To be honest I don't think he looked anything like he does now in the afl when he was in the sanflClose played in and won a premiership in the SANFL.
Against Port as well, so they should have been well aware of what he was capable of too.
Also I suspect that Geelong is not exactly a whole world away from Adelaide, in feel or geographyWho else is SA?

I would want more than a first round pick for Close and would be sad to see him go. He is in our starting 22 and adds chemistry we have sadly lacked.Close is from SA. Could be him.

If we managed to land Grundy it would mean an awkward list for a season with too many rucks. But it would be worth it in the long term.
Both Ceglar and Stanley may retire at the end of next season. Conway hasn’t played yet and will need support.
Even Blicavs is 31 and can’t play forever.
Adding Hopper and Grundy after winning the flag would be a superb combination.
Stephen Rowe of fiveAA here in Adl said earlier in the week that PA are into a cat's small fwd with a 2 yr deal on the table. Miers the likely choice ? Or would it be Evans or the lad we got from wwt in the sanfl, Williams. Apparently "Hinkley is very keen on getting him over" Rowe's words were.
