There are a couple of reasons why id consider trading him but unless we can gain more than 150-200 in cap space i doubt its done. If we some how could end up with an extra pick next year and upgrade a pick this year ..all options. The bottom line is we need to see him play next year cause players not playing want to play. Its one of my things with Sav... will he get many games next year?

Clark apparently running in the 1/2 time sprint .... lets see how he measures up in that.

Anyway.. how many do we need to delist. 7?

My guess is about 8 but it depends on list sizes and how many players we bring in.

I think Sav will get games next year Stanley is not exactly durable and we have no other decent rucks.

I hope we don't stuff up with this Cameron deal brinkmanship. Having high draft picks is not a guaranteed win all the time. If we have to lose one or two picks and/or fringe player for Cameron I'm all for it, but obviously if we can keep them thats better though. Cameron is a certified gun who will form a lethal combo up forward with Hawkins and frees up Danger to run amuck again the middle. Its like the old saying a bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush...

Indeed. I think for us worst case scenario is we lose the earlier two of our first rounders, 11 and 13. They probably bloat out to ~14 and 17ish. At the end of the day if you told me that's what it'd cost for JC I could live with that.

Of course, it would be better to keep our picks and this is why I can comfortably just sit back and let Wells and his team go to work. For me, anything more than the above scenario is a bonus.

edit: of course there are worse scenarios where we pay more than those picks and/or lose players we want to keep. But I genuinely believe that will not happen.

I am happy its wells and not big footy posters that pick the trade. Some cat cans way over rate our players hell some even still rate Parsons and think another club will pick him up

I don't rate him highly. I think he's good enough to be on an AFL list. He's currently not in the GFC top 30 players, and justifiably so.

Whether another club will pick him up is another question. With list sizes shrinking it's probably unlikely.

Tom Morris on the Fox blog said Esava is highly highly unlikely to leave the Cats. Cats rate him highly and he doesn’t want to leave. Is contracted as well.

He did say that the noise around Jordan Clark won’t go away. Freo chasing hard.

Also said unlikely Ess will match Daniher and will cop a pick in the 20s even though Bris have two picks in the teens. Of course the narrative on Geel is that the Giants are still certain to decline a top 10 pick and match

Why give up two promising young players when we already have the picks capital to get it done or otherwise, other players that are not required?

Clark - name a better first round prospect we’ve drafted since Selwood. Menzel maybe. That’s it. Clark bursted on fo the scene last year, and was injured this year in a strange season, with perhaps some second year blues. But his intercepting marking ability, kicking and nous is elite for his have and will be a GUN. The rumours circulating have ZERO substance. Of course WA teams would want him. They can ask - which is probably where all this media crap has come from and duped good cats supporters into thinking he’s leaving. Facts are he’s contracted , loves the club, the club rates him extremely highly and I know from within he club they see him as a future captain. Clark leaving is akin to Duncan returning to WA due to rumours. And we wouldn’t trade one of the BEST young contracted prospects on our list. Just why??

Sav - the short sightedness of fans is incredible. He had an indifferent year. Not every young prospect has a great year, hell even Cameron was dog sh*t this year. He’s 22, takes more pack marks per game than most and due to our current game plan, has been shifted OUT of his natural position (which is FF). He’s a power forward with more natural athleticism than most other key forwards. You’d probably have the kings and naughton ahead of him at his age and that’s it. How old was Hawkins when he came good? Fact is you don’t throw out great young key position prospects lightly. We have none other on our list in the twos bar SDK. Hawkins is 32 and Cameron will partner Sav in a great combo post Hawkins life. We cannot, and shouldn’t let him go again, when there are other options.

What would I do?

I’d negotiate hard. I’d say the precedent for a RFA trade is set. It’s less than fair value due to yrs of service. danger was a round 1 + round 2 + plus a nobody player for Cameron a d a round 3. But I’d argue danger was better.

That equates to 11 + 33 + one of Krueger/Constable/kennerly for Cameron + 46

Worst case scenario we might go to 11 + 18 For Cameron + 46 if push came to shove.

We keep our better required youngsters, get Cameron and hold on to one of our first round picks. And in a few years when Clark is our premier gun quarterback and Sav is ripping it up at FF as a high leaping pack crushing power forward with Cameron roaming CHF, you will love it.

Tommy has full respect for Sav, and strongly believes he will develop in the future. Currently, his decision-making can be flawed but that can be taught quite easily because he has good raw marking skills and that is hard to teach.

As for Jordan, he is honestly one of my best friends in the hub and it would be heartbreaking to see him leave.

I've been of the opinion for the longest time that if you want to have free agency compensation, make it in the form of a salary cap "tax" on the contract offered. For the same of argument something like 10-20% of every dollar paid over the median salary. For Jeremy Cameron that might amount to 50k/year that goes out of our cap and gets added to GWS's. Proportional compensation for the club who loses the player, allowing them to attract a replacement. Doesn't disadvantage every other team in the comp by generating a pick. Adds a cost for teams recruiting via free agency, which in turn means clubs are in a better position to retain their own players while not limiting freedom of movement. It's mind numbingly simple and non-rortable. But instead the AFL opts for the stupid solution that doesn't work on any level.

But I also still think if you're committed to having free agency, just have free agency. No compo. Even if it sucks as a system (and we're one of the primary beneficiaries of it)

Just posted this on the GWS trade board, let me know what you guys think:

*******************************

Interesting scenario it creates if someone like Tom McDonald might want to go to you guys on very high wages, and someone like Higgins wants to come to us, on high wages.

There could be a way here where essentially everyone wins.

Here's my proposal:

Higgins on 600K
McDonald on supposedly 700-800K
Cameron being offered 750-850K

4 clubs in North, Cats, Giants and Melbourne get involved and help out each other with various benefits being incurred.

Net end result is -

North: give up Higgins & 1 MIL-1.1 MIL - 700/800K K for McDonald and 300K for Higgins - & receive our First Rounder - Pick 11 or 13 (they have so much cap that they might not even be able to meet the minimum - especially with Brown going)

Melbourne: Salary dump of McDonald, paying none of his contract, for our pick 33

Geelong: Give up pick 11 or 13, Pick 33, receive Cameron and Higgins

Giants: Give up Cameron, receive McDonald for nothing, and gain Pick 9 - effectively gaining a high pick, a replacement key swingman and 750K of cap space

*********************

Raw Trade Outline:

Geelong:

OUT: Pick 11 or 13, 33
IN: Cameron, Higgins

North

OUT: Higgins, 1 MIL-1.1 MIL
IN: Geelong Pick 11 or 13

Melbourne

OUT: McDonald and 700K+
IN: 700K freed up in salary cap, Geelong Pick 33

Giants

OUT: Cameron
IN: McDonald (salary paid) Pick 9 compo

***********

Satisfies a need for everyone, whilst Giants get a replacement player for no salary and utilizes the compo pick effectively

Dudoro is a ****ing recruiting genius.

Turned picks 9 and 3 into one in the 20s.

Caldwell nominates the Bombers...why would anyone want to go there.

Wait for GWS to ask Dodo for two 1st rounders, next years 1st plus a player like Merret or Heppell. We all know thats what would happen if the shoe was on the other foot.

Forget what Morris says, he has no idea.

Don’t believe everything you read, never knocked back 3 and 9 because the swans didn’t have both, because Papley never left. Continue on with the Dodoro bashing though, can’t believe he’s still in the game after all these years. My bomber mates hate him more than you could imagine.

Things could have got a lot easier for all, as Carlton are know to want our 2 picks

With Jye going, that could simplify things much further. We could give Carlton Pick 7 for 13 and 18, without asking for anything back - so you're getting more for Caldwell. They could then pass 13 on to you for Caldwell, and then pass 18 on to Essendon for Saad and their 2nd

You end up with Pick 9 + our Pick 13

I think we do have to remember he is a power forward, not a midfielder. Key Forwards tend to mature later and play longer, as is the case with Hawkins now, at 32 is probably playing some of his best football. How long that carries on for is anyone's guess but there is no reason to think he wont be as dominant next year and the year after as he has been this year.

Cameron at 28, will be in his prime for another 3-4 years at least, and possibly a year or two long with a slight role change to be a more stay at home forward.

As i and others have said though, we have to remember this years draft has been destroyed by the covid shutdown of junior footy in Victoria. Id have no problem giving them two first round picks this year.
I actually don't understand the argument that the draft won't be as good because these guys didn't play at under 18 level. (You could also ask, how many injuries were avoided because they didn't play?) I get that it's way harder to assess, but a stretch to assume the top players won't be as valuable. Surely it's an opportunity for clubs who track young players long before their final year to outflank those that focus on the short term.
