I understand your position and his behaviour is awful but what’s the alternative? Don’t we need to find a way to get through to young men in this position and isn’t it worth keeping going until we do? Maybe the lifeline of AFL for such a talented footballer is the carrot that is needed to get him to see the light. If not what next he goes into society without really learning the lessons needed how does that go? The ultimate goal surely is he respects women so we should focus on what achieves that aim and total ostracism whilst easy for those disconnected I doubt ends well. He has a lot of ground to make up but I’m in the camp of giving him the chance to do it within strict guidelines.
How many chances are you prepared to give him ?

The AFL carrot lifeline has been dangled in front of him, he doesn’t care for that carrot. Just as he doesn’t care for women & most likely other people in general.

As for the strict guidelines. It’s the AFL. Their image is what’s important to them.
He reoffends, they’ll keep it quiet until they can’t.

You want him to have another chance ? How would you feel if he did these things to your wife, your daughters, your sisters, your female friends ?

But he wasn't and it cost us.

Hodge was simply an all-time big game player.

Two normies, arguably should have been three and he polled in the 2013 GF.

His only blemish was the 2012 GF, which he played on one knee. I remember there being talk about him potentially retiring because of his knee at the end of that season.

Wasn't he also battling gastro?

I've never watched a replay of that game but think the camera at the ground flashed to him eating a banana on the bench

AFL clubs are not obliged to cater for misbehaving players forever, if they prove unable to be rehabilitated there are other pathways to that outside of an AFL club. Being able to play football as a career is a very well paid, high profile privilege - he doesn't deserve what is ostensibly a 4th or 5th chance while being given the privilege of playing AFL footy.

If he was not a talented footballer it wouldn't even be a discussion.

The alternative is that he gets to learn away from the spotlight, and isn't seen as a role model for other young men

No, that's a role for wider society, not the AFL to implement their own 'reward and rehabilitation' system. An AFL player's life is one of privilege and wealth, and the admiration of many young men. I don't want those young men knowing you can be a shit prick to women, and still lead a life of fame, wealth and acclaim. I want young men to see that you forfeit these things when you act in certain ways

So we need to reward him as an incentive to NOT break social rules? Is this a principle we apply to others? Perhaps instead of sending people to prison for murder, we can offer them $600,000 per year for every year they DON'T murder someone else!

As for 'going into society', you make it sound as if he has been raised by the AFL, and is now being released by them into society. He has been raised in society already, and he hasn't learned any lessons. He needs to learn these lessons, yes. And unfortunately, he needs to learn them the hard way now.

Total ostracism? He's not going to the Gulags...

He is still in society, hopefully finally getting the lessons that come in society.

What he doesn't have is the life he could have had...one of privilege and status. And I'm fine with that.

Fair enough. If it came across as anything like rewarding or excusing him then I didn’t express myself properly. his behaviour is reprehensible and it does all the good men a total disservice. I was just trying to look at it from the lens of how do we get him to stop being that way. I don’t see how he is allowed back and as you say maybe that’s the right punishment I just hope that wakes him up.

It’s more than just about stopping Thomas. It’s about protecting as many women as possible.

We’ve seen that people will continue to idolise sport stars, famous people etc. despite them being abusers and/or rapists.

The only thing that seems to have any effect is deplatforming these people and showing that there are real consequences for such behaviour especially when the judicial system can be found lacking.

all that aside just watched 2008 hawks pies a few takeaways
1. Thomas Murphy a great 3rd defender unlucky no to win a flag
2. Chance Bateman massively underrated for his kicking absolutely elite

I'm adamant that had Murphy played in 2012, we win that flag. It just didn't make sense selecting Ellis (and hindsight says anyone would've been better than ellis)

Naah if Hodge was fit we win
For me it's somewhat a blemish on his career but the fact he got away with it 2008 (and win the Norm Smith), of course it was worth rolling the dice. But would be interesting to ask Hodge on this. He's a pretty honest dude, so wonder if he does or doesn't regret playing in retrospect

Yep, agree , Hodge plays fit and he goes into the midfield like he has many times in big games throughout his career and we come away with a win. Hodge in the middle was something else, second only to Burgoyne in making an immediate impact in games. We absolutely brain the Swans in the midfield that day but sprayed so many entries and shots on goal. Burgs , Sewell, Smith and Mitch were huge in the second half but needed Hodge to take the game by the scruff of the neck but he was obviously no more than 50% right that day.
Guerra also a huge loss on the eve of the finals.

Tom Murphy - gave it everything but let's be honest here.
Never before has a whipping boy been whipped so consistently and relentlessly across his entire career.
I'm a very positive fan in general but Tom Murphy was the one that set me off. I'll never question his effort, or team ethic but this guy did my head in for a good 5 years there.
