I believe that I am a glass half full supporter. Sadly, as I have posted in the SANFL thread, I have seen no signs over the last two years to suggest that Fisher would turn things around.
Fish almost seemed like a zombie, just going through the motions. I wish him the best and I really hope that he can find some peace in his life.

In the end it's a good thing that Fish has walked away. It wasn't going to work.
On reflection it has been a really interesting journey.
You can see why he was drafted - best KPD in the U18's, Talia near the end, strong mark and good reader of the ball in flight. It looked a safe pick.
BUT, as soon as he started in the AFL it looked different.
Suddenly he looked really slow. He was pushed out of contests incredibly easily. He constantly looked frustrated.
Off field I heard that was incredibly serious about his football. His preparation was immaculate, but he he reviewed himself and his performances very harshly. No wonder he didn't find any fun in it.
So was it a draft failure? Yes, absolutely. It was a failure on two accounts.
Physically he did not have the development left in him that we obviously thought he did.
Mentally the signs were there, and if we didn't pick it up, we better have learnt that lesson.
It was a bad choice and a bitter blow. Hamish has to take responsibility for the selection.

May as well have been sanctioned from the 2018-2019 drafts, total catastrophe that will probably kill the ceiling of this club during the next flag tilt. I'm not even sure this group can make finals in the next 2-3 years, you look at the talent on clubs like GC, Port, Freo, Carlton and we're miles off.

Was always nervous when we drafted him, was like he was almost disappointed at coming to us on draft night.

Add the 2016 draft to that.
You're right, sanctions are cleaner in that you can't hang on to failed 1st and 2nd round picks for years hoping you haven't stuffed up the picks, and usually long after any half interested club supporter knows that you have

Club has known this for a long time .
hopefully we learn from it and explore what signs we chose to ignore in the selection phase. Does anyone know what we do to physiologically assess perspective draftees?

Looks like no elite mid with our first pick this year either. Another defender coming up.
I'd say 2018 and 2019 were already wasted seasons. The club was in full blown denial mode and totally out of touch with reality. I wonder if Roo hadn't run his mouth off at supporters and created a shitstorm at the end of 2019, does that review even happen?

Disaster all round, but the best thing for the club and for Fischer's health. Hope he gets the help he needs.

2019 was a wasted season long before the 2019 draft even happened.
The only good part about it is we imploded and didn't just limp our way to a 9-11th finish.
All that pain usually gets improved by a high draft pick.
For this to spectacularly fail within 3 years is just embarrassing.
All the best to Fischer in whatever he does next. I can see him playing for a Melbourne side at some stage in the next few years once he gets himself right.

You can get good key defenders later in the draft, you don't need to use a top 10 pick to find one. Every year there is examples of good defenders getting taken later in the draft or even in the rookie draft. I understand that we had just lost Lever and the club saw Fischer as his direct replacement. But still, top 10 picks should be used for gun mids or key forwards.

A shame, but it seems like the best thing for both parties. All I hope for is the club doesn't skimp on supporting him now.
It's a small consolation, though really, getting rid of Chapman/Burton/Fagan etc did a fair bit of pain management for that year.

I feel for Fischer here because while it was horrible drafting by us on a number of fronts, it's not Fischer's fault we drafted him.
I can't imagine it would feel good when things aren't working knowing that the club which drafted you also used the highest pick in years and was embarking on a full scale rebuild where this pick was a key piece of it.
Then things start to collapse off field with his family health issues and Covid
Hamish needs to take accountability for his huge drafting error but I wish Fischer all the best in his life beyond football
