Daniel Rich has always promised much. Selected 7th in the 2008 draft, he was highly rated. He won the rising star and the AFLPA's best first year player. Carlton were maligned by some for picking Yarran over Rich, and Fremantle faced a similar response to their decision to pick Hill over Rich.

Since then, it's fair to say he's stagnated. He's played 86 games now, he's in his fifth season, while he won the nab cup final medal for the best on ground, in the first four rounds, he's averaged 16.5 disposals after four rounds at around 59% DE. The only match he's reached 16 disposals or more is against the suns.

He was listed in Mike Sheehan's top 50, as well as bigfooty's top fifty (for what that's worth), but does not seem to be performing even close to top fifty standard. Looking over at those lists, fellow draftees Hannebery, Zaharakis, Ziebell, Yarran, Hartlett, Hurley, Hill and others seem missing, even though they've probably surpassed or at least stand equal to Rich. Hannebery in particular seems to be underrated in light of Rich's reception post the nab cup final. The question is, have we overrated Rich based on pre-season form? Did he peak in the first inning? Will he ever become a star midfielder? In essence, where is Daniel Rich at?

Are their midfielders helping each other out? None of them had great games today, some of them came into it in garbage time, but when the whips were cracking none of them were front and centre unless you count Hanley as an on ball player.

One trick pony. Great kick, but he doesn't do much else. Especially when tagged.

He's probably never going to be an accumulator but what he does with the ball is very good. Doesn't waste much of it.

Was always a little bit lazy as a junior and i feel he is still sometimes but is a damaging player in the Stephen Hill mode in that they will hurt you with minimal touches.

Would be the cream on our cake at Essendon and would love him finishing off the work of Jobe.

Must be rated if he is tagged in the modern game - only one opposition player gets a tag. I'd go with the opposition coaches when he gets a tag every week.

Where is Daniel Rich at ? Say no more !
