Have people actually watched Chad Warner play?

His Nick name is one way Warner. He’s a damaging hand ball recieve player. High metres gained, high score involvements.

Ie- he’s what Tim Kelly was at Geelong .

He doesn’t fix our midfield. He’s the cream, but we are missing the whole entire cake.

Not only would it be unlikely he would come, but it would be negligent on West Coast to use multiple high end picks on Warner when they have so many glaring holes. It’d actually just set us back.

West Coast would be better off using the picks this year on genuine ball winning midfielders.
Not one person would say Chad Warner is the 1 guy to come in... Warner should be 1 of 3 mature midfielders we get in.

Can't agree strongly enough. Would love Warner if we were in the window and if we want Rodriguez might be that sort of player with a longer operating window.

We should be looking at letting Oscar Allen go. We're stacked with prospective talls and can afford let him go given his age and the list projection. Waterman is just as experienced and effective.

Get pick 1 & 2 or 2 & 3. With that go after the best midfielders possible.

Does the game yesterday change anything with who we should target in the off-season?
I dont think so, maybe makes Warner slightly less of a priority but its stuff we already knew

Waiting for Hall/Gross to develop as that inside ball winner, and then letting Hewett and Reid work through what theyve gotta work through. Id throw Hall in there right now, hes definitely big enough at 190cm and hes pretty built, Gross might be a bit skinny to go into the midfield full time, but no rush.
I think Hutchinson is a more outside player so id scratch him off the inside mid list, or just keep using him at 10-20% CBAs for a while to see if he stops ball watching in there.

Sheldrick would be a nice get, not for the spread but for his inside work. Ward too but imo hes less likely.
Perhaps a Matt Crouch type for 2-3 years? At least he can win his own ball and may want to extend his career slightly, that would give Hall/Gross/whichever other mids we draft time to develop properly at least.
Throw a FA offer at Worpel? hes out injured at the moment and the Hawks might find his replacement in Ward or McKenzie

Looking through the list of OOC guys this year, theres not that many other decent mids who I think are gettable

I dunno what we can do about the ruck situation, put Barnett back to training full time as a ruckman?
We have Edwards, Gov, Brock plus Jamo/Bazzo/Maric/Ginbey/Shanahan/Allen who can play a KPD role in a pinch so maybe we dont need Barnett back there that badly.
Cameron would cost too much to get across, hes contracted and the Pies need him, imo not worth pursuing. Not really any other ruckmen available at this stage who are worth the cost to upgrade from Flynn.

I think our flanks and wings are ok for the short term, can be sorted with the likes of Hutch/Davis/our NGAs plus any developing mids

If as reported Matty Rowell has met with Geelong and other clubs in Melbourne, I'd hope our recruiters have reached out.
I know his from Victoria, but we must ask the question.
I'd rather Rowell then Warner and be willing to pay the same and give up the same to get him into our club. Might be a long shot, but if we are not at least asking the question, no matter how long a shot it is, we should!
If the Blues don't make finals this year, see if Cripps wants to finish his career back in WA, helping shape our youngsters

Warner has IMO 10 years of football ahead of him... I think we probably need to plan on winning a flag in next 10 years and not rebuilding still

Warner fixes the age gap issue we have as would adding Starcevich. Id like to see us add Warner, Starcevich and a ruck who isnt a complete potato (Nick Bryan). Id do that and still have pick 1 to use a well as the priority picks AFL gift us after another terrible year

and throw a cool 1.5mil a year at the Bont while we are at it

Starcevich 3 concussions in 20 games, id be a touch wary of giving him a particularly attractive offer

Assuming we finish second last and we let Oscar walk we could have pick two and pick three

Could then give three and Hawthorn’s first for Chad or just take it to the draft

So it’s Chad and a top end young midfielder or two top end young midfielders and someone else in the teens

I’d be happy with either option

If Chad makes Harley re-sign, I’d lean towards that, if he doesn’t, then I’d lean towards completely focusing on the draft and trading Harley this off season to Essendon or Richmond.

Id be very insistent on NOT giving up 2 first round 2025 picks for Warner, they cant use them anyway, they just want points.

3+f1 for Warner +swans f1+swans f2 for example

Something like that

My idea is

  • Sydney chase Oscar Allen and take him
  • We tell Sydney we wont match Oscar Allen providing a quick trade is done for Warner
  • We give Sydney pick 1 for Warner + 2025 1st rounder
  • We get pick 2 as Allen compo
- AFL give us 2 end of priority pick first rounders

We turn Allen + Pick 1 into Warner + pick 2 + Sydneys 1st rounder

Swans could have pick 2 in this case, not pick 1 lmao

IF we get priority picks we know its only so the AFL can justify giving them to Richmond the year after lol

Pretty grim in here today.

We can only recruit mature players who want to play here, but any recruits need to address our deficiencies (midfield and ruck). Kennedy (Carlton > Bulldogs) would have been handy yesterday.

We can't continue to use precious draft capital on mature flankers (even good ones like Baker).

How about we reverse the Richmond experiment and play the kids. Let them learn on th job and leave the recent additions in the WAFL.

We talked a lot last year about list cloggers but that's what we have brought in. Put Allen, Gross, Hall in the team and develop them.

Go to the draft with a clear midfield mandate and leave trading alone. Warner can wait till we are ready for another outside player.

Thirded.

Getting pretty concerned about the Warner notion, especially if - as is typical for us to be able to attract someone over - we have to over-commit and promise in advance that we'll get a deal done.

It’s personnel.

Shuey won a norm smith roving ton Nathan fukcing Vardy.

We just haven’t invested enough in midfielders. We need 3 elite ball winning mids.

Instead our first round picks in the last 3 national drafts have gone on 2xHBF, an injury prone mid with broken feet, and Jake Stringer deluxe.

And then we wonder why a midfield of Graham, Duggan, Hutchinson gets smashed.
It's both in my opinion, mainly personnel I agree there . When you're getting beaten so badly around the ball you have to change your method.

Go man on man, body players rotate players through that can.

Wouldn't have changed the result but would have shown fight. So many games last year got touched up at stoppages and nothing was done about it. I have a feeling Boots will be gone next year or moved into a different role.

Great player top bloke. To me he has showed little in coaching flair for stoppage coaching. Tim will tell.

People expecting 1st - 3rd year mids to be able to compete with the best of the best are idiots. Rowell was drafted as a beast in 2019 and was only really able to dominate from last year onwards. Anderson was coming from further back but with a higher ceiling and again on the inside, last year.

2024 was their 5th year as number 1 and number 2 picks.

Guys like Daicos and Ashcroft senior have been mentored and really a part of the AFL system as much as possible for years before they get drafted. You can't expect guys coming from traditional pathways to have that impact, particularly when surrounded by absolute chaff.

Hall is a genuine inside mid yet at this stage is weaker body on body than Hewett or Reid. HTF does bringing him into the side do anything other than destroy his body and confidence.

Then you have guys who are athletic freaks like Ginbey but hey guess what, he's not a midfielder as i've said all along. Just doesn't read the play at stoppages well enough. Could he become a mid in a few years time, maybe. But guys like Yeo, Dawson or even Laird who start as great HB's and become high level inside mids are rare as rocking horse shit and guess what, it also takes years.

Kelly is a ****ing joke based off of this weeks game, Sheed has been ruined by injury and we have had nothing of quality come in, in between Sheed and Hewett via the draft midfield wise.

The club can't do a Hawthorn and attract lots of opposition players to help build their squad as most players just don't want to move to WA.

Two of the clubs 3 best players yesterday were Baker and Graham. People act as though the club has done nothing to try and improve. That was game 1 into a new gameplan against the strongest inside midfield in the league. Even if fully fit Yeo would have barely moved the needle.

I said a couple of years ago 2025 would likely be our worst year. We got lucky to win some of the later games we did last year and our 2 good wins early in the year we had a fully fit Yeo and Harley played out of the box in his first year before teams had put any work into slowing him down. He's now coming into the season underdone and the opposition has worked out how to get into his head.

The midfield is a work in progress and likely still at least 3 years away. It's why I'd let Oscar walk, draft Sharp and if he still wants to come trade in Warner. The club needs to continue to work to improve the midfield as quickly as possible but this isn't going to be some amazingly sharp turnaround.

OR WILL IT? :moustache:
