I’d rather scrap them completely then the way it works now, as a club we haven’t had many “true” father sons anyway. Jake Waterman basically the only one that’s worked out for us.
But we're not talking about the way NGA's work now. We're talking about what Gold Coasts boss suggested, open the NGA's back up completely (or did you not read that?). You have a NGA kid rated as pick 1, you can match the bid on him.

If the AFL invested in the academies and made it about participation as opposed to top end talent, there would be greater benefits long term.

The current model promotes self interest as they focus on making stars.
Academies came about, because the AFL didn't want to fund junior development in the Northern States. Their pockets weren't deep enough, apparently.

Aside from Harley, who are these first year mids that have significantly impacted the last 5 years? Think we should be more realistic with our expectations.
It's not too much of an expectation to expect a top 3 pick to win the rising star award. Statistically a rising star winner will come from there.

So it's not too much to ask to draft a mid that does well and impacts big.

We split picks way to often/rarely get high draft picks that people have such a low expectation of first round draft picks

According to the commentary to the U/18 WA v SA game, under-ager Koby Evans is an indigenous NGA for the Eagles. He bagged 2 goals and looked lively. He’s already 187cm and 82kgs. Sheehan noted that he has exceptional speed.

One to keep an eye on…
He trained with us this preseason
But so did a heap of nga in the preseason
He and Wes Wally look like keepers

You’re not really behind right now. You’d be equal with the two NSW clubs this year and next year in terms of talent, with your NGA kids in the WA team.
Having said WCE puts more money into there NGA program than the other clubs and have been missing out on the talent
Hopefully with the rule changes this year make it easier for us

When I saw the headline I was rapt, thinking that career ending injuries would be salary cap covered. Thinking Elliot Yeo if he were to OP again.
Then I read the next bit and found out it was only for concussion. At least it's a start.
Another convoluted angle that clubs will expolit .

Jealousy and envy are the biggest issue on academies. afl needs to be stronger in this area and not react to clubs that act like this.

Rules could be tighter on nga but you will always get the ones that would have made it anyway. Just take the good with the bad.

Saying he’s a forward / ruck hybrid just because that’s what we’re trying to do with him, doesn’t make it true.

He looks awful up forward, his set shot kicking is very poor and he just flat out looks lost.

He’s probably one of if not the worst rucks getting games in the competition as well.

He’s not good at anything.

Can’t cop this versatility argument.

Where else does Serong play, where else does Brayshaw play?

I could go on ad infinitum, most players play one position and that’s it.

The rare player such as HR plays multiple positions competently or better but he is an exception rather than the rule.

On the other hand, Jermaine Jones plays multiple positions but none of them well.

In a midfield as threadbare and shallow as ours, someone like Brodie might be a useful contributor.
ATM it’s Yeo, Harley and Kelly, and then bust. We don’t need perfection, we just need something.

How did we get a list like this?
Serong is also a good fwd. However Freo keep it simple and keep him in the midfield.

Bradshaw pure mid, which ties down your versatility if he's getting tagged etc

Sliding doors moment there.

Erasmus or Chesser?
Chesser hasn't really set the world on fire . I think he will be a slow burn .

Erasmus would have probably played 40+ games for us and been further along in his career as he plays a position on need for us .

At the end of the day our NGA was top 10 and we couldn't draft him .

We didn't have the opportunity to sell our first rounder and pick him up for late picks like other clubs do .

That is my real frustration with the academy bid system . Its the discount and the pick selling .

Sure you are locked into getting that player but for a guy that is bid on at pick 10 you effectivly get him for a pick in the 20s after all the shenanigans.

Multiply that over 10 years and its a massive leg up

Carrol is getting games as a developing mid at a club contending now.

And doing alright.

What has Hall done to date in comparison? Zero.

And if the last three games have shown us we need to add to our midfield depth. Right age and a position of need.

We need to replace Sheed, Gaff, J Jones, L Edwards and in 2 - 3 seasons Yeo and then Kelly. Thats 6 more mids to come in. We arent getting them all with 1st round picks thats for sure.

14 may slide to 17 and land Travaglia or Bo Allen.

Travaglia plus Carrol for a 29 year old Barrass.

Every fan wants more sure but that isnt a stretch, maybe some future pick swaps to get it there.
Carroll is worse than what we currently have. Hard to see how we improve going forward with leftover scraps of players.

The sliding doors moment was the AFL changing NGA matching.

Which is why the AFL is looking to change matching.

It’s only a leg up if your academy is producing that number of kids, at that quality.

We have only had 1 first round academy bid, he wasn’t top 10. And most posters here like giving him sh!t.

Every other academy kid we have or had, has been bid on in the second or third round, or we’ve drafted ourselves late in the draft or rookie draft.

NB. Obviously we’ve had a little more luck recently with father sons. But that’s random as everyone keeps saying.

Seeing as Richmond were always happy to bid on the Lion's NGA prospects, I am expecting Matthew Clarke to be ready to id at 2 or 3 on Levi Ashcroft. Lions are pretty light on points as I see them making a move up the ladder in the second half. Lions are holding their own R1 and R3 and Hawks R4. Points wise (assuming Laura and her mates are true to whispers) the Lions may have to cough up a fair deal more if they want Marshall and Ashcroft. No reason why Levi does not go 1 or 2 with Marshall looking like a early 20's pick. If Lions end up near the top 4, they will be looking to buy points. Dev, Prior and Lane are not players I would want. Tunstill a possible - but only if cheap.

Meanwhile the announcement of changes to NGA and F/S will come out soon and settle it Big question will be what year is it being implemented. The champs are showing we might have some decent (though not pointy end) prospects

Lifted from a HS article posted on the Suns board.
Ah - Mark Evans. How he has changed tact since moving to the Gold Coast. Always look for the self interest on these sorts of issues.

How Ugloe Hagan was an NGA is still an issue if you take Evans approach. Hell, the guy got a football scholarship at Scotch. He was always going to play AFL and Doggies did next to nothing to earn him. Likewise you and Hodge.

That throw away line is plainly wrong. And disrespectfull to Carrol and the kids acheivements to date.

Carrol IMO has better chances of making it than L Edwards, J Jones and most other players we will draft as 3rd rounders. He has done his apprentership and broken into a pretty decent team with a strong midfield group contending and played decent footy from limited opportunity.

And he likely surpasses the current output of Gaff and Sheed as well.

That is 4 current players we currently have who he would be an improvement on.

Also a chance he ends up better than Petruccelle, Johnson and even Chesser's output to date.

The bar you have set isnt that high. And we only get a single 1st round pick each draft so we simply cant rely on 1st round picks to solve all our list issues.

One of the best performances of the Talent League round by Travaglia who's in a strong vein of form right now. Playing mid/fwd instead of his traditional defensive role, his competitive intensity around the contest helped him win plenty of the ball for his team. He did everything possible to get Bendigo over the line, kicking three goals in quick succession deep in the fourth quarter to put them ahead on the scoreboard, but unfortunately a spate of ill discipline saw them conceded the lead and the game.

Recall reading Trevaglia only recently was moved to half back in the champs. Usually played wing or midfield.

Kids this good in juniors can play anywhere but when they get to play state champs get shuffled around.

Kid could likely play on any flank or wing.
