We can't exactly complain about travel tbh.
I wonder how much of it has to do with losing both games. What if we won both of those games last two years, what would be the reaction?

Of course it’s a factor but it’s less to do with that and more with the fact that we’ve had to do it two out of two years and both against the same strong team. They didn’t send us to the Gold Coast last year for example.

I’m very glad about this stance. Of course we’re not hard done by with travel as are none of the bigger Vic clubs, but we are used for big games which bring additional attention, pressure and the best of the opposition (see Dogs pressure intensity against us v the week after).

Momentum is everything and starting your season every single year away against a strong team, earlier than most teams, is just an uncessary burden to put on us and an advantage to the host, again every single year. Send others to play the Northern teams if they really want to stick with the concept.

I can’t see it surviving for much longer if this is the kind of feedback.

Compare it to Gather Round. All clubs taking part, slots into the fixture nicely, all in one location. That’s something I can get around and the fans have loved it since it began. Scrap the rest.

Maybe as an alternative, have like a northern gather round as opening round, spread every team in the two states. There are different ways they can make it better.

While it wasn't at Sydney Showground, Hawthorn did "start the season a week early", playing in the first game of the year against Sydney! It doesn't look like it's done them any harm, but I'd still prefer us not to be playing that week. As for Opening Round itself, I don't really care too much either way.

Shows how much of an impression OR made on me. I'd forgotten they'd even played Swans and it was even less impressive this year with the Qld games called off.

I think I just have a preference for the season starting with all teams playing. Multiple games could still be played in NSW/Qld for a round during the season to gain the support & exposure the AFL say they do it for, without it being OR.

I can appreciate the Giants Social Media banter, but deep down you know they’re sulking that they won’t have an opportunity to have their big Marquee Grand Final each year against us.

It feeds that bottom line narrative, but I think there’s also a sprinkling of us being fed up with GWS geeing themselves up for it and using us as a vehicle to kick off their season. That Kingsley incident was ugly and I suspect there’s real tension there. Moving forward I’d prefer us to not be the sacrificial lamb for stuff like that and the milestone celebrations.

TBH I’d prefer to shift our two Marvel home matches into south east Queensland to help grow the game there and give up the gate takings if we can get a foothold into their zone.
