Bevo mentioned in his presser before the Lions game about Garcia not being very clean with his disposal.

If ball retention is a priority in this game I can understand it. Win as much as you can as often as you can from CBs with Bont, Treloar and Richards (also quick enough to defend it if we don't win it). Take it I50 and lock it in with Macrae and Libba (being clean and less prone to turnover) heavily involved in stoppages if the forward half. Sanders, being an effective tackler in close, is probably part of that recipe for locking it in.

Garcia's challenge is to improve his disposal and decision making to the point where he can't be left out. Not there yet.

Again, it's being too clever by half IMO.

Just pick the best side Coach (Garcia is in it right now and a tall defender goes out pick another tall defender) and go out there and get the win. Don't stuff around and think you're outsmarting everyone else when you're nowhere near as smart as you think you are.

Yeah, this isn’t the time to send one of your better player go back to the VFL to work on their shortcomings . I get that it’s worked in the past - players like Williams and West had to go to the ressies to work on specific aspects of their game .

But we don’t have that luxury at the moment . Garcia has been very good in the engine room . The time is now , the season is hanging on by its fingernails.

If Garcia needs to go back to the VFL what about Daniel ? He’s regressed by a decade .

Was really hoping for Busslinger but we’re clearly going back to a 2 tall set up down back. Which is a bit bizarre because 3 talls was working.

I’m not as high on Garcia as some around here but think he’s been pretty good and I find it bizarre that he is dropped before Daniel, Gallagher, or VDM.

Bizarre.

For those that say Garcia 'butchers' the ball a fair bit.

He gets a lot of it, he shows intent. He's having a red hot crack. He's got energy. He adds a lot.

More than can be said for a fair few others in that side right now who are doing little more than collecting their pay cheque.
100% His first touch is so sharp. He has speed and works hard off the ball. Great tackler and very high pressure. Goal sense. Genuine natural footballer who I think we were all shocked and so excited seeing how much he has improved.

That's all well and good but there are players who are alot more wasteful with their disposal in ahead of him, and although he isnt the cleanest in the team atleast he gets the ball, there are others who stay in who seem to be actively avoiding it. Last week he was also down on his pressure applied but half the team applied next to zero.

Not to mention that we bring in a 29 yo player to replace a young player.

We are not going to win the flag - why aren’t we looking ahead?

Anyway I don't think Garcia will be the difference between winning and losing.

Khamis in defence might be though. I hope O'Donnell goes back and we just accept Khamis up forward. If he's sub again well... Bevo has lost the plot.

Not sure why Buss is back in the rehab group. Must be pulling up sore with something minor.

Garcia I understand. It's a game about scoring from turnovers now.

Khamis on Amiss maybe is the go. Khamis isn't slow and Amiss isn't a physical player.

Thought Lobb got injured but I guess he's actually playing with it which might be part of why he's been so poor last week. Have no one that can replace him.

If ball retention is key, Gags is lucky to hold his spot. I love what he will become but his kicking had been poor for a few weeks now.

It would depend on what you think is your best chance of winning this game.

If you think that your best chance of winning this game is to win territory, camp inside your attacking 50 for as long as possible and not cough it up in congestion through skill errors or decision making (making your defence vulnerable to a quick rebound from D50) and also to have those players in congestion capable of scoring themselves (Bont, Treloar, Libba, Richards, Macrae for example) then Garcia is vulnerable at this stage when all those players are available. He's in a scrap for a spot with Sanders, Gallagher and Daniel. A case for and against could be argued for each of those players.

IMO, Sanders, Gallagher and Daniel are just as vulnerable as Garcia but for whatever reason those 3 are preferred for this match. Personally, I think VDM is in a different conversation as his attributes and role are different.

Amiss has a lot of football smarts about him. I'm not keen on this match up at all

Have we ever seen a debut that came from outside of the named 22 or from the extended bench?

Of course there is still time to make an announcement, but it seems a little unlikely given they like to make a show of and invite family to a players debut.
Can't remember if it's happened at the Dogs, but late change debuts have definitely happened before (Logan Morris a month ago for Brisbane the most recent example). Not sure if any would have been planned ahead though.

Pies don’t worry about ball retention. They go they play messy. Footy isn’t perfect and I think bevo is looking for perfection much like bucks was at the pies. I think he needs to loosen up a bit let the players loosen up and play with some more flair when in possession of the ball.
Obviously on defence we need to bring more manic pressure. I feel this is our biggest weakness as a team.

I'm as confused about Garcia as most, not as upset about Buss/Buku as most. But I am excited that when we collectively melt we can sometimes get a surprising result...right?! Maybe?! That's something?! Kind of?! Just trying to convince myself that's a thing.

Generally when there are comments to the effect of “this is the most well balanced side selected all year” we go down in flames, and when there are melts we win.

For 2 weeks in a row I don't believe we have picked the best team available.

We may have lost last week anyway but team selection and structure did contribute somewhat towards it. May do again this week.

Whether we make the finals or not this season was not the issue it was actually seeing us develop something sustainable. The best part of our loss to Sydney was seeing the younger players like West and Garcia thrust into the middle in the last quarter and them making a significant change in the course of the game.

Last week we reveted to our tried and failed play our best 3 mids together multiple times Bont, Libba and Trealor with a little bit of Macrae and shock horror it failed again.

Now we have Buku in as a defender against the team that exploited all of his weaknesses.

Bramble and VDM seriously !!!! Daniel probably should be with these 2 but at least he has runs on the board.

And though I like and am happy he resigned, Gallagher has been struggling for a while in his first AFL season.

Hopefully it does not bite us again tomorrow

I feel like I'll be watching tomorrow with hands over my eyes every now and then peaking through my fingers, but I am interested in who might win the Majak Medal tomorrow.

It's definitely going to be Walters. Forward struggling with mediocre form for most of the year who also has a habit of flipping a switch and being unbeatable when they play us?

As I said ... "just sayin'".

However, being a bit more analytical about it, if Bevo was indeed hoping to catch Freo's oppo planners off guard this would be a very good way to go about it. If so, he might not have even risked telling Buss and his teammates in case it leaks out, as we have seen so often.

I'm not sure that's how he operates but it wouldn't totally surprise me if it happened.

Anything is possible. However, Im not sure that Freo would be wrong footed by the debut of an unproven player. Id understand the subterfuge and the expense of bringing Aaron Naughton into the side at the last minute but not a debutant.

I certainly want to see Richards at the CBAs too but don't underestimate Libba. He'll be much better for last week's run.
I would never underestimate Libba, but in my view for as good as he is. We have very much needed the point of difference that Richards and others brought to the side in Libba's absence. We need to find a way of re-rolling Libba where he isn't attending every CB. Indeed I would say the same about The Bont and Treloar. Bevo's conservative approach of playing The Bont, Treloar and Libba has found us wanting when teams move the ball wide of the initial contest too often for my liking.

I can understand it if it happens on a horses for courses basis where all of the other named emergencies were smalls and a tall was needed at the last minute. I just dont see the point in having a plan to do it in advance.

I guess this all feeds into the pointlessness of naming a team days in advance of a game.

Here is the lineup from our first encounter with Freo this year, back at the end of April.

Here is tomorrow's line up

1718326889292.png

For those who like spot the difference games you'll note that neither Libba nor Sanders played in that first game in April. Garcia did however. Richards played but was listed at H/B (or thereabouts) and I think that's where he played but can't exactly remember.

The midfield mix and potential matchups with the new line up is very different from that of the first encounter when Libba, Richards and Sanders are added to the midfield mix. Garcia was part of that first unsuccessful mix and match ups. He won't be part of this attempt at success barring a late change.

I'd expect, that with the inclusions tomorrow that weren't available the first time, it's extremely unlikely that we'll see Caleb Daniel on Serong. Could be wrong though.

It feels very much like experimental Bev where we randomly depart from structures or players that have been working, drop a game or two, then revert back to what was working. It feels like every year there’s a game or two we drop from some inexplicable selection or loss or form issue. It’s just one of Bev’s idiosyncrasies.
