OUT

Brown - he's been cooked for so long now. Never again.
McVee/Woey/JJ - one of these guys can make way for Hibberd who can take on Dusty. McVee had a shocker and Woey and JJ very little influence.

IN

Petty - can go forward
Hibberd - the man is built to play on Dusty
Would be brutal to drop McVee after one bad game

True. That's why i put him in the mix with Woey and JJ. Also Hibberd would be a replacement for McVee i guess. Wouldn't be my selection. Maybe a rest for the young fella? Would hate for him to run out of steam heading into a finals campaign. I think JJ would be my choice, but Woey also added very little. I like Woey, neat kick, moves well. Just not sure he adds anymore than Sparrow, JJ etc?

I am semi there with you. Not a huge fan of JJ so bring in Hibberd and give Rivers more midfield time.

At some point they will drop Brown for Grundy, I feel, so they might as well get in early and get 4 or 5 games under Grundy's belt before the finals.

It does have that smell about it. Goody doesn't want to be embarrassed about not playing Grundy, so can totally see him coming back in without much effort at Casey. He loves Petty too, so he'll likely replace Tommo, but I reckon we should be playing Petty forward. He'll provide more than Grundy and Brown. Has better hands than both and can crash a pack. Tommo might cost us in a big final is my only concern, but otherwise he's been pretty good when called upon. Arguably better than Petty.

Not wanting to be embarrassed about not playing Grundy will not be a factor in selecting him or not selecting him. Who cares what the media pundits think? You sit down and put a side together you believe is going to beat the given opposition on the day. That’s it.

Would be a big mistake to assume top four is sewn up.

Coaches don't want to look stupid. I think Grundy is in Goodwin's plans whether it is working or not at Casey. The media have given it a lot of air. I reckon Goody will want to prove them wrong. Whether he does or not is another thing, as it's pretty clear to all of us (except Goody), that Grundy isn't a forwards a**hole. We look so much better as a side with Gawn playing without another ruckman.

Am I the only one that doesn't want to see Rivers move up the ground? We look so much better and get fast entries when he's breaking away from d50 with speed and getting it to open players. Prefer that to slow ball movement from Lever, Salem, May etc
Fair point. Why not both though. CBA's are only gonna help his development anyway, but also I think having a whole stack of players that can run through the midfield is really helpful, especially if we're relying on Trac to kick goals for us.

He doesn't really break from deep in defence, most of the good stuff is around the HBF and beyond which is where mids go with the ball anyway. Can play a bit more free rather than worrying about a man

Our forward line functioned because we transitioned the ball quicker. You make space by getting the ball in there faster than the defence can get back.

Good piece by Leigh Montagna on AFL360 on this point.

Actually think Grundy coming in for Brown will change very little if we keep playing the same way. Will mostly just mean that JVR doesn't have to take the ruck duties from Gawn which is a small win.

So basically it's Oliver and Tracs fault for shit kicking early in the year just as a I said 😂

The balance for us is gonna be attacking from the back half, but then pressing up when we lose momentum to force forward stoppages and close down the scoring in the game.

He is starting to play 'taller' too - plucking intercept marks and hopefully develops more strength for 1on1 contests.

He's confused because multiple things were happening at once. We've had points where we played more guys in the forward line who actually don't give up when they don't have the ball and we've had times where we've played a more run-based attacking game. Different things have happened at different times and they often don't have strong correlations. We're also relying on HGH mainlining cokeheads to try and figure this out.

There's a great opportunity for a smart team eventually to start hiring intelligent people to do analysis. Probably a while off given the industry is one the most nepotism filled idiot factories you'll find.

Yep and when Oliver's back get him back to handballing 90% of the time.

Last point you make is the most important. Should have been how we started the last quarter against Adelaide but they jumped us.

If we can pull off that kind of switch we'll be dangerous.

Oliver can kick it fine he just loses his shit a little when he's getting tagged heavily and wants to feel boot on ball. He just hacks it out of stoppages. But yeah I'd be fine with him going back to creative handballing a little more rather than the need for 38 disposals.

We've learned how to attack, we've learned how to defend. Part of me thinks we actually thought the forward game would help us attack and the defensive game would help us defend and it's been the opposite but either way we know now.

Shows how much better ball use becomes when you open the ground up with fast break, run and carry rather than the kick to contest and dump kick first option strategy for the forward half territory, repeat entries game.
Forward stoppages directly are also one of the shittest methods for scoring

Haven’t seen stats on it but our below average forward line were playing outnumbered or with slow ball movement making it very easy for defensive cover. The improved ball movement and disposal is more strategy than individual for mine.

We were playing this style to start the season, Kozzy was going into CBA’s, and then we either flinched or strategically switched to the contest and defence for some reason.

We switched because Brisbane and Essendon both smashed us on the scoreboard and we panicked.

Yeah I think gather round loss was the turning point. A QF v Collingwood will be interesting which style we go for after beating a depleted Collingwood in a lock down King’s Bday. Probably have to stick to the style leading in and take them on.

Think if we go head to head against the Pies we get beaten 8 times out of 10. They have better mids with the ball and more dangerous players around goals. I actually think the defensive slog is the go against them

100%. And you definitely cant afford to carry guys like Brown against them. Like Smith in the sub role but against the Pies I reckon he should be in the starting 22 just for what he can do defensively in our F50

Yep, one passenger forward could unlock their ball movement chain and ruin our defensive structure. We concede 120 and blame May and Lever
