I remember that game.

It was weird for 2 reasons. One it was the best afl game i saw stephenson play..some of his ruckwork in the first half to chapman bartel etc was sublime. We were over 7 goals up but then after half time he tired and hawthorn ran over us, i thought we were cooked until the final minute when selwood went through the middle and found hawk. I was sitting directly behind him when he kicked on the siren and i knew it wasnt missing.

Back to easter monday i doubt they will rest hawk (then he would have his 350th in adel so they will rest him next week not this week). Danger looks like he will be out injured but hawkins other great mate duncan should be back.
Orren Stephenson, brings back memories. Drafted by the Geelong in the 2011 AFL Draft aged 29, the oldest first time draftee in AFL draft history. He was delisted when Hamish McIntosh joined Geelong.

Sadly, his son Patrick was remanded into custody for allegedly murdering Samantha Murphy.

We won the free kick count last weekend at home - and there were definitely some iffy ones that didn’t get called that the Saints should have gotten.

According to afl.com.au, we lost last week's free kick count 14-18? Felt like the Saints got a roll-on with the umpires in the second half after we had some early calls, though that doesn't make things like the Danger free kick any better (should've been play on at best).

But this week there seemed to be more obvious frees that were just not called for us, not just 1 or 2 missed calls.

Stop looking at stats and look at other parts of the game... Stats are not the only thing that matter in AFL

Touches are not the be all end all of everything

I decided to look up what these "plenty" of games were

Last season, in 5 of his 23 games he finished with between 10 & 15 disposals

He then had 3 games of 26+ disposals, while in another 3 he had 24 or 25 disposals

Last year he averaged 19.0 disposals and that really does seem to reflect his season where he was hovering around that mark disposal wise across the season. He had a high of 32 & low of 10, but there wasn't significant fluctuations that can skew the data

Did OK at assists too IIRC ;)

I went to both games. And there is no doubt that the “noise of affirmation” is a real thing. And silence!

It shouldn’t affect the umps but I reckon it does. They don’t know when they have missed a free kick against away team

Top 10 in score involvements for 2023, among some pretty good company….

Theres been research on it across multiple sports... and basically the "home ground advantage" is a real thing- crowd noise has a definite influence on how umpires call games. Nobody wants to get yelled at by 50k people.

I know some like to mock Geelong & Scott as being the king's of late changes, but it would seem while the was some uncertainty over Atkins playing, he wasn't named knowing he wouldn't play

- Parfitt didn't fly over with the team & was still in Geelong on Thursday. And would seem Atkins failed a fitness test on match day afternoon

Plus we know Duncan didn't expect Demi to be going into labour on Friday

Would have saved 10 years of ruck problems if we just picked up Grundy in the 2012 draft instead of McIntosh

Private jet to get there?

Weird that neither he or Knevitt were already over there. Either Bruhn went over so Mullin was initially the carry over emergency or we only took 23 with us.

Don't forget that Bruhn wasn't named in the 23, so surely he didn't fly unnecessarily

I was thinking we may have taken Knevitt as the carry over due to his potential versatility should a late change be needed - or has it been mentioned he was also a late traveler?

There's 10/11 flights each day from Melbourne to Adelaide on Virgin

Depending on the time he got the call on Thursday night, he may have made the 9:20pm. Otherwise he likely caught one of the morning flights over on Friday
thanks, so flashing light escort to terminal, order a seat near door vacated (no problem Cats fans ;)), stretching inflight, escort to AO...
or stand in line, "one on next flight to ADL!, regular boarding..... :laughv1:

Sorry, my mind flashing to slapstick scenes of getting him there before the bounce.

Who knows the specifics - but considering he was still in Vic less than 24hrs out from the game, it makes his efforts even more impressive

It does lend to the idea though that it's Atkins OR Parfitt in the team - guess we'll at this week because if Atkins is deemed ok for Monday, we may see an unlucky omission for Parfitt

Parfitt said he and Mitch got the last flight. I assumed he meant he and Mitch Knevitt flew over together. But thinking about it he might have meant he flew over on the last flight and Mitch Duncan flew back on the last flight. Too many Mitches.

So maybe you're that Knevitt was the carry over but with Atkins out they brought Parfitt in as a direct replacement.

Nah, it was Thurlow who we picked just two picks ahead of Grundy.

But that one has been done to death on this board, over and over again.

Doesn't help that Thurlow was never the same player after his ACL.

I do recall i said something similar not long after the draft in 2012.

I know what he means though a big reason why we didnt take grundy is because we had traded in mcintosh weeks earlier (its also why we delisted stephenson then because we had few list spots and we thought we had too many rucks). If we dont take mcintosh i reckon we take grundy.

Turns out all the other rucks we had (simpson vardy west etc right then through to abbott fort smith et al) were either too injured or not good enough. Stanley has been the best of a bad lot but we easily win another couple of flags in the last 10 years if we had grundy on the list.
