I'm really excited to see how Andrew Gaff develops next year.

Had a tough year in 2013 but it'll be great to see how he bounces back and what impact the new coaches will have on him.

As quoted from the Sunday Times..
Adam Simpson is plotting a midfield overhaul with Forward Jack Darling heading for regular runs on the ball.

Simpson is understood to have identified the need for an injection of speed and powerhouse midfielders.

The durable and athletic Darling on the ball and running half back Shannon Hurn are believed to be two moves.

Hawthorn import Xavier Ellis is expected to play off half back.

Simpson has already bluntly declared that his players must be adaptable enough to handle at least two positions.

Finally someone at the club that understands what we need!
Simmo is the man!

About f**king time. Couldn't be more pleased with what we're hearing about Simpson.

What does this mean for the future of Priddis, and would we be looking at someone more versatile than Sheed at pick 11. There are plenty of options after all.

FF: Cox Kennedy LeCras
HF: Hill Darling Wellingham
C: Shuey Priddis Rosa
HB: Hurn Brown Waters
FB: Glass MacKenzie Butler
R: Naitanui Masten S Selwood
INT: Yeo Gaff Schofield Ellis
EMG: Cripps Carter Hutchings

Heartening stuff isn't it.

The entire pre-season should be dedicated to improving our midfield setups. I don't give a stuff about the win-loss record.

Throw Darling, Hurn, NicNat (ruck rover), Schofield, LeCras even Tunbridge into the mix and see what they can do.

The sad thing is many on this board had been calling for most of these moves for a long time. Woosh either couldn't see it or was too stubborn to change.

Sheed would be pretty decent on the forward flank. Can kick a goal, apply defensive pressure and would set up forwards well.

Acres is the more versatile.

Freeman, struggles outside of stoppages.

Bontempeli may have been ideal buuuuuut...

LeCras probably has the best hands in our squad, especially since Kerr left. He also has the fitness, sadly though I don't know if he has the durability to make the move full time, but should be able to add to the rotations.

Hurn doesn't quite have the fitness, he is also a bit big. If he makes the transition I just hope he doesn't lose his kicking power, or contested marking strength. However, he is a mature body, so I wouldn't be too worried.

NN is good at stoppages, but not yet on the spread. Definitely better up forward. Schofield isn't a big possession winner, but is fit, quick and agile enough to rotate through the wings.

Good kick inside 50 and likes the occasional running goal.

Darling could be great but needs to work on his hands and reaction time. Get that right and he could be a bull at stoppages.

I don't think any one player is the answer, but definitely building versatility amongst the playing group and increasing the midfield rotations is a great move and one many have been calling for. Also an important step in dealing with the interchange cap.

As for mids moving elsewhere, Shuey and Masten can both rotate through the forward flank.

Gaff already plays that release role from defence, despite not having a strong defensive game. More a testament to his work rate than anything else, because he usually does it when lining up on the wing.

Selwood I am not so sure about. A lock down defender maybe?

Agree with you completely. Although I wonder, have we become so used to Priddis that we believe anyone capable of resting in another position without being a liability is versatile?

Sheed would be decent on the forward flank in a similar manner to Selwood, Masten, or I daresay Hams. Not a natural forward, but a talented enough footballer to rotate onto a flank and play a role or nab a goal. When Simpson mentions versatility, I imagine more along the lines of being sufficiently capable in either position to be selected there independently.

And given Simpson supposedly values disposal by foot more highly than any other trait, it does not compute that we have the old tunnel vision on Shred. I'm not suggesting that he's a terrible kick, but rather that it's not a strength of his. And relative to other proposed first-rounders in our range, it is average at best. He does have a booming left boot, but struggles to execute the effortless flat pass to a player leading into space. We NEED a midfielder capable of doing this more often than not. It's a fundamental skill of good football that as a team, we'd only achieve in the single digits over an entire game. Seriously, I'm petty enough that I counted in our last few games, once or twice a quarter at best. Compared to the Hawks, who'd hit these passes several times in one progression.

Here's my go at it
B: Glass, McKenzie, Waters
HB: Hurn, Brown, Schofield
C: Gaff, Shuey, Yeo
HF: Rosa, Kennedy, Wellingham
F: Lecras, McGovern, Ellis
R: Naitanui, Darling, Selwood
I: Cox, Priddis, Masten
Sub: Hill

At last!!..some insight into the new coach's intentions..and right on the money!
with a strong forwardline and backline in place, arguably the best ruck, and enough running flankers, this was the last piece to the puzzle, presuming it all links up with new and more direct strategies..now we have something to look forward to! (if the preseason goes well)

and having more versatile players (mids esp.)=more rotating flexibility, harder for the opp.to read and nail down..under woosha it was way too one-dimensional (god bless his running shoes!),too easy to read and predict by the opp..he finally became old school,or wasnt good at adapting and evolving longterm, nor within any given game..the king is dead, long live the king! ;)

If cutting back 5kg makes him kick it 5 metres shorter...well i'm sure we could still cope with a midfielder who can only roost it 55 m through the middle two shafts.

If Simpson had anything to do with the rotations through the middle at Hawthorn, then we can expect a vastly different team in 2014. I swear I counted about 15 different players line up at centre bounces in one quarter of a Hawthorn game this year. Even Roughead (not taking the ruck contest)

I don't see Darling playing on ball for reasons i've repeated time and time again on this forum, if he wants to do it he should spend the off season working on his left side, especially his disposal by hand. But getting him into the broader "midfield" makes sense.

I'm not sure why we persisted with him playing deeper than Kennedy for a lot of 2013, perhaps because he's not a great CHF target and doesn't straighten us up all that much. The problem is our ball movement has been slow and Darling has been sitting deep under the high ball, he's so much better when he's got space to use and playing him up the ground will see the ball in his hands more often, for someone who works as hard as he does to average like 11 touches a game is pretty criminal IMO.

Every now and again put him on the wing, lateral to play and let him use his pace to run and create. That for me would be a good way to introduce him to the midfield. He can then rotate back to a half forward role and push back to a deeper forward role. He's got the tank to do this with license from the coach.

Get him training with a 10ft wall on his left side. :thumbsu::(
