I mean, he did dominate shield cricket for a number of seasons so his selection wasn't exactly unwarranted. Giving a baggy green to the likes of Nic Maddinson, Joe Mennie and Michael Beer were more in line with your sentiments I feel

Sure, he made good runs for a while for Victoria (on one of the easiest and slowest tracks for opening batting in the country). But he never looked good enough. His technique isn’t good enough. And then they also left him in the Test team far too long even when it was painfully obvious he wasn’t going to make it as a long term prospect.

Plenty of average cricketers have been picked for Aus, yes. But plenty of far better players than Harris never got the call-up, either. And I strongly doubt he would’ve ever been given a single Test if he’d been playing for a state other than Victoria or NSW.
