I'm pretty pumped we picked up Otten, I tipped us to get Scott Simpson as a tall forward, but to get Otten is going to be sooo much better.

Cant wait to monitor Ottens & Sellars progress.

Isn’t Andy Otten seen more as a midfielder who can float forward rather than a out right key forward?

191cm midfielder who can then move to the forward pocket is very exciting.

Otten wont be as a tall KPP foward but will be a very handy fast leading & crumbing type player. His hands are meant to be very sticky.

cant wait to see how he goes.

With Tippett, Sellar, Walker, Hentschel, Gill and McGregor I can see him being played simply as a midfielder.

But agree he sounds like a very good prospect and cannot wait to see how he goes.

I can't wait to see young Jacky in flight & if all the reports about his speed & skills are correct we should be in for a treat.

Does anyone think that T Walker is ready made for AFL & if so can we expect him to play many games in 08 ??

How is Ebert a safe pick ?

Who is to say that in 3 seasons time Ebert wont want to try and go to the Power

In an interview with Ebert earlier in the year, he said he was happy to go to asny club, however he will always believe the Power is the greatest club and their would always be a lure to play for the club his family played for......

This alone makes Ebert a risky pick
Err....where does this myth come from that Ebert is a Power supporter?! He has supported Essendon all his life.

Secondly, if he really wanted to end up at Port, he would be stoked that he is going interstate because it would be much easier for him to make a way to Alberton from Perth than it would be from West Lakes. Port won't finish anywhere near the bottom in the next 3 years so the threat of PSD won't be there.

Thirdly, if he really wanted to go back to Port, taking into account what I said in the paragraph above, why would he and his family be disappointed that we didn't pick him up?! Ebert was as much of a risky pick for us as Cornes boys were for Port. In other words there was no risk of them going to the cross town rival. Even when Kane was deserving of getting a game and was not getting one, there was no risk of him leaving Alberton even though we were circling.

Ebert's game translates very well to the AFL and while people will come out with the crap that you need pace to play this new AFL footy, All I will say its a biggest load of crap. For as long as there is auissie rules, there will ALWAYS be a place in the game for player like West, Ebert, Mitchell, Hodge, Thompson, Harris etc.... Pace is something that is a nice attribute to have but its not everything. Those flashy player that run with the ball tucked under their arm and burning off their opponents in open spaces owe half of their pay checks to players like the ones I have mentioned above.

Look at WC who have traditionally always had good midfields and always been unable to uncover some great midfield talent. If anything, one would think you need some pace for a big Subiaco Oval and player that love to run and carry but in the last few years they have always gone for the big bodied, gunt midfielders who are not quick. Waters, Ebert, Hurn, Selwood, Stenglein..... This myth that people love to push out about needing pace to play this modern game is garbage. Give me Hawthorn's flat footed list over the flashy Western Bulldogs crap any day of the week and twice on sundays thank you very much!

The first rule of playing this game is that you need to be able to find the footy and when you do, you need to do something productive with it. Ebert does both of those. He was the safest possible pick for us at 10. As I said, I congratulate the club for having the balls of steel to take a risky punt on someone who could end up being better than Ebert but could equally end up being another top 10 bust for us. Time will tell if they are right or wrong but I am confident in saying that Ebert will be a VERY VERY good AFL player for many years to come and I can say that with some degree of certainty. Dangerfield while I truly hope he becomes a genuine superstar, he is a risky pick.

No not yet, he appears to be a bit to light to play as a forward. Give him a solid pre season and then 3 months playing games at the SANFL level and by July or August he may get 5 or 6 games but I cannot see him being ready by round 1.

The above post is an example of why i voted for his Stiffiness in the popularity stakes. :)

I agree regarding Jacky. I think he will be one of those fan favourites that everyone loves to watch.

As for Walker, he is not AFL ready. I suspect he will start the year off in SANFL reserves and work his way up into the league side next year. I don't expect him to play AFL next year but sometimes these kids adapt lot quicker than we think they would and force their way to get an AFL game. No one expected Douglas to play in his first year and he did. Same could be said of Knights, Vince etc...

Sometimes those that you least expect to play AFL in their first year end up doing so (Douglas) and those that appear AFL ready for year 1 end up struggling (Pfeiffer).

Thanks for that, it's just that i read somewhere he played A grade footy in Broken Hill with great success & maybe he has the size & muscle to step up to AFL level next year.

Enough of this go home factor shit already. welsh and mattner were locals who left, meesen couldnt get a game, mcgregors a local, watts and angwin didnt cut it, didnt matter where they came from. that leaves hudson, johnson and stenglein vs jarman, robran and no doubt a few more.

Ermmm, you forgot to mention their stars of the mid-field, Judd, Kerr, and Cousins there Stiffy.

None of them physical giants - all of them with excellent break-away pace. Their match-winners.

The ones you mentioned have been the support crew.

Err... and where are those players today?! ;)

If they think pace is imperative, they would have aimed for some this year to replace Judd and Cousins, yet they went for a couple of opposites in Ebert and Selwood. They lost a lot of pace but they went for strong bodied "flat footed" players to replace those. That tells us something. If tells us they rate the ball getting ability higher than the flashy stuff.

The 3 you have mentioned all have the ability to win the hard ball as well which is what made them what they were before they self destructed.

Not unhappy with the quality we have picked up, but would like to see more local talent picked up. Not saying pick up SA boys at all costs but the quality kids of the Ebert and Greenwood ilk. I don't want to end up like the EPL following a team like Chelsea and Arsenal which are 90% imports. The day will come when Adealide are 90% Victorians, and we are Adelaide by name only. If our first two picks were Ebert and Greenwood instead of Dangerfield and Otten I don't think too many would be disappointed.

I would be disappointed that we picked Greenwood over Otten. Its a national competition and by pure weight of numbers, you are going to have a lot of interstate players on your list. Victoria produces masses of players every year while the other states fluctuate. As a result you will always have a high number of interstaters on your list and eventually you will have more than you have locals.

I am always advocating that you pick the best player regardless of where they are from. While we rated Dangerfield better than Ebert, not many, if any clubs did and thats the worrying sign. Not that we picked up a victorian over south aussie.

I see him a bit like Mark Ricciuto.

Roo played country football in Waikerie as a 15 year but needed 1992 playing for west Adelaide (before he was on the crows list) to acclimatise himself with the step up. 1993 he was added to the crows list and was a regular by round 4 or 5.

Give Walker the same sort of time frame to settle into city life, a new playing environment and a higher standard of football and he will be ready to go. However I am not expecting much next year so by the second half of the year he may be given a go out of necessity.

Noddy...feedback we are getting at the moment is that NC and the senior players are rapt in his attitude and outstanding ball skills and will gt a crack at NAB games to show his wares....already wacked on 5 kgs and considering he was listed at 71 kgs january 2006 and now at 89 he has relsihed the work and obviously is keen to have a real crack early....b has anyone been to training on wednesdays as apparently at the main skills sessions he has been very good !! Would love some feedback from people actually their and not second hand.... Young, fit n keen The AFC Football Machine New Crows logo for 2008

Am I disappointed we didn't pick Ebert?!

Yes! Yes I am but thats because I wanted us to minimize the risk. Ebert was a "safe" pick in a lot of ways. Midfielder whose game would translate well to the AFL level and while he is unlikely to be a genuine superstar of the competition, I think he can be a VERY VERY good player for a long time. Think Scott Thompson without brain fades and better disposal. And to top it off he was a local and was unlikely to bolt anywhere.

Now the AFC obviously rated Ebert but they had someone they rated higher. Riskier pick but with greater upside. AFC have backed themselves in. They have rolled the dice and if they win, they look like geniuses, if they lose they look like idiots but its the gamble they were prepared to take and the fact that they overlooked a player they rate very highly in Ebert, to draft a kid that won't be in the state for another 12 months, suggest that they rate Rodney EXTREMLY highly.

While I am may disagree with the strategy, I also have to congratulate the club for having the balls of steel to take a gamble in a hope of striking it big. I would have gone the safe pick, the AFC want to aim for the stars. Thats where we differed and thats OK but any suggestion that AFC overlooked Ebert just so they don't upset Port Adelaide is rather childish and baseless. This is a multi-million dollar business and you don't make decisions based on not wanting to upset someone or to stick it up someone. You base them on what you think is right for your club not anything else.

Fair call thanks for that:thumbsu:

Im interested though on your thoughts since the AFC didnt recruit any young SA talent at all what message that sends to young SA talent in future drafts?

I want our club to pick the best possible player available. I don't care where they come from.

4 SA players got drafted on saturday (I'm not counting Dew). The standard in SA was shocking. I don't want my club to pick up players because they come from this state when there are better options available who just happened to be born and brought up elsewhere.

I can't wait for the day when the club is captained by a WA or a VIC player. This is a National competition.

Even if you look at the SANFL, there has been a huge influx of players from interstate as clubs there are going after the best available as well.

Marty, the SA talent pool this year was shocking. There is a possibility of better talent next year. But what it says to me, is that my club will pick the best available player.

How do you know this? Which clubs have released their list in order of preference?

Clubs dont have to list any preference, need to look at each player and where they are in readiness to play AFL football, hence why stiffy has said, it is a gamble the AFC have taken, Ebert is an AFL ready player Dangerfeild is not an wont be in 2008 and possibly 2009 due to his commitment to his year 12 studies.

IMO it is a strange pick, and Im not doubting the quality of Dangerfeild because I know little about him, but players before they are drafted would be rated on their ability to step into the game the next season hence Cruzier will step straight in to fill Carltons number 1 ruck from 2008, hence Ebert will be getting games with WC from Rnd 1 next year, hence Dangerfeild will be eating recess while the rest of our troops are running their guts out on the training track.

I raise you Ebert, an no you arent willing to go against/question what choices the AFC have made we all know that Nikki.

Actually I have questioned decisions before, but unlike many others I don't always state them here. Often by the time I get a chance to post, others have already put the questions out there, so I see it being pointless posting again. People tend to be overly negative and I try and balance that out.

Ebert, 1 player, that's all you can come up with? Who most people know only because of his surname. If he didn't have Ebert as his surname not as much attention would have been placed on him.

Many on this board wanted to pick him up for the pure reason that he is from SA and that it would cause some angst amoungst Port supporters. I find those reasons to be petty and naive.

I want my club to pick up the best player, they rated Dangerfield considerably higher than Ebert and new that he would be concentrating on his studies next year. Name me one first year bottom age draftee that has made the Adelaide team in their first year playing here? Our club doesn't work that way.

It's like I asked the other day (and got no response from anyone) - people are claiming that Ebert would play next year. If that is the case, who in our team makes way for him? I mean which of our second and third year players will make way for a so called AFL ready Ebert?

Pfffft so your saying Ebert was rated top 10 in the draft because of his name pffftt get of the grass seriously, as I said players are rated in the draft on their readiness to play AFL football.

Maybe our club is going about it the wrong way, did that ever cross your mind??? countless numbers of other draftees are playing the year after they are drafted, maybe that is why we are losing alot of our young talent because they are wasting away in the SANFL?????
