Hawthorn chief executive resigns from struggling Hawks
By Jake Niall
May 24, 2023 — 3.02pm
Hawthorn chief executive Justin Reeves has resigned from his position at the helm of the Hawks.
Reeves confirmed his exit on Wednesday at a meeting with the Hawthorn board.
Reeves has been under enormous pressure after the Hawthorn racism investigation. He also faced fierce pressure from the factional issues at Hawthorn’s board level that led to a change of president.
Reeves spent just over five years as CEO of the Hawks, presiding over the tumult of the handover from Alastair Clarkson to Sam Mitchell and then the fallout from a cultural safety review that resulted in an AFL investigation into allegations of historical mistreatment of First Nations players. Reeves was not at the Hawks during the period covered by the allegations.
On Reeves’ watch, Hawthorn also undertook an uncompromising rebuild of the playing list, in which stars Tom Mitchell and Jaeger O’Meara were offloaded, and the club fielded the youngest teams in the AFL regularly.
Reeves had been signed to a five-year contract in 2021 when Jeff Kennett, who had been the driver of Reeves’ appointment as CEO, was still president. But that contract contained termination provisions and protections for the club if they parted company earlier.
Reeves had a close relationship with Kennett and other board members and found himself at odds with Clarkson in 2020 and 2021, eventually resulting in Clarkson’s exit and payout. He strongly backed Mitchell in the succession arrangement, which was brought forward by 12 months, resulting in Clarkson receiving a payout of $900,000 for the final year of his contract, giving the four-time premiership coach a 12-month break.
Reeves had been retained by the board this year, despite a change of leadership when Andy Gowers, a 1991 premiership player, replaced Kennett following an election last December when ex-deputy premier James Merlino also joined the board via the members’ vote.
The cultural safety review, completed by Phil Egan, placed further pressure on the CEO when the allegations against Clarkson and his former lieutenants Chris Fagan and Jason Burt surfaced and prompted what became a drawn out AFL inquiry that took an enormous toll on all parties. Clarkson, Fagan and Burt have categorically denied the allegations made against them and have consistently said they look forward to clearing their names.
I’d luv this to happen, but let’s remember the AFL didn’t even take picks off * did they? The AFL taking away the Hawks 1st round pick as punishment and giving us a priority pick would likely have the support of most other clubs as they wouldnt be pushed back. Except West Coast perhaps if it's pick 1.
Edit... plus lots of clubs are angry with the Hawks as well.
Could easily have picks 2 and 3.
AFL have the perfect storm to do this.
Hell why not, give us their 2nd rounder as well.
Let's face it, the AFL found * not guilty at the tribunal.I’d luv this to happen, but let’s remember the AFL didn’t even take picks off * did they?
Correct they didn’t . They actually gave them pick 1I’d luv this to happen, but let’s remember the AFL didn’t even take picks off * did they?
That was the biggest **** up in the whole mess. For the AFL to say, “hey Cheats sorry we can’t let you play finals, but don’t worry we’ll give you pick 1 to compensate” was just plain stupid. And the boys club media didn’t push it as an issue.Correct they didn’t . They actually gave them pick 1
On the interchange gate fiasco? Clearly he has resigned just to divert attention away from imbroglioI wonder if Reeves will dish out the dirt...
Gowers wants to do everything in his power to reconcile Clarko and the club. Would he be doing that if he thought this report (and its contents) was worth a pinch of s**t?
And the bloke who commissioned it gone. Not hard to read the tea leaves here.
If you read the full reports, Sonja has been complimentary and appreciative towards Gowers all the way through. Her speech was definitely about building bridges not battle lines, despite how the tabloid headline writers tried to reframe it. Any angst she has expressed over the handling of the situation at Hawthorn has been directed toward the previous board of management, not Gowers. I get the sense that Gowers is a good egg and he will steer Hawthorn through this mess the right way. Whether that involves sanctions, fines, or loss of draft picks, he will no doubt fight for his club's interests to minimize the impact but will likely accept the negotiated penalties with dignity and grace, and with respect for the indigenous families and former coaches. He's possibly the only person in this whole mess who wants to see a satisfactory outcome for everyone involved.I listened too - when he mentioned Sonja I thought he might push back against her comments about Hawthorn, but he praised her speech and said she’s right about “building bridges, not battle lines”. He did pretty well, I think.

Not exactly true. In addition to being booted from finals in 2013 and fined $2 million, they lost their first and second round picks in the 2013 draft, and their second round pick in 2014. They were allowed to trade back into the draft in 2013 and got Zach Merrett that year.Correct they didn’t . They actually gave them pick 1
There was no real precedent for having 34 players suspended for cheating either, so the AFL had some flexibility. In any case, the previous penalties hadn't included anything for anyone taking banned substances - which hadn't been established - so it wouldn't have been totally outrageous to have some penalty after the finding that virtually the entire list had been doping through a club managed program. Not exactly true. They got pick 1 in 2016 but that was after ASADA/WADA/CAS suspended 34 players for the season which resulted in them coming last. There was no real precedent for the AFL to deny them the pick given that they had already taken picks off them in 2013 and 2014.
That they got to keep the 2016 no 1 pick is just ridiculous. It was a direct result of, and therefore lessening of, the penalty. There was no real precedent for having 34 players suspended for cheating either, so the AFL had some flexibility. Agreed. But fortunately the 2016 draft wasn't particularly strong and they torched the no 1 pick on Andrew McGrath, so it's really a case of no harm done. That they got to keep the 2016 no 1 pick is just ridiculous. It was a direct result of, and therefore lessening of, the penalty.
I suspect Gowers is also getting blowback from members. People who remember where the club was when Clarko took over, and value the contributions of he and Fagan way over those of the likes of Reeves and Kennett. If you read the full reports, Sonja has been complimentary and appreciative towards Gowers all the way through. in reality they should have been kicked out of the comp cause they couldn't field a side. There was no real precedent for having 34 players suspended for cheating either, so the AFL had some flexibility. The footy gods.Agreed. But fortunately the 2016 draft wasn't particularly strong and they torched the no 1 pick on Andrew McGrath, so it's really a case of no harm done.
no inside knowledge but after the bye (July 1) seems fitting... assuming he's ok by then and nothing new pops up.Does anyone have any thoughts on when/if Clarko may return? What do we believe the next step will be?
l think he will stay away for as long as he feels Rattan is doing a good job and he feels ok in himself...no inside knowledge but after the bye (July 1) seems fitting... assuming he's ok by then and nothing new pops up.
