Well yes, we're "all of a sudden" contenders because we finished 3rd last year and now sitting 2nd at the halfway point. Not sure what your definition of "contending" is.

To be fair, Collingwood and Brisbane in Brisbane were the best 2 teams last year by a mile. This season is a lot closer. Sydney aren't as clear ahead of the rest of the competition as the hype suggests. If asked to rank the team 1 to 18 for premiership threats I'd have Carlton as 3rd favourite at the moment but wouldn't surprise me if they did win.
