If he stays he's probably battling it out with Perkins for a HFF/mid spot in the 22, which is more an indictment on Perkins than anything else. Parish, Merrett, Hobbs, Setterfield and Caldwell all ahead of him for on-ball time, with Tsatas also needing the minutes.

I'd see if St.Kilda are interested - they could use a bit of burst speed in their midfield and a mature player like Shiel could help them hold their top 8 spot.

I think the only reason I'm keeping Shiel now is for the leadership he shows through his setting of professional standards, and I think that would be the main reason Scott might keep him. Otherwise, he needs to go so we can refine the composition of the midfield. I'd think any club that thinks it has a show to win the 24 premiership would be looking at whether Shiel can bolster their chances and depth.

Is it just my memory, or was he going ok in that role? Looking at his goal tally suggests otherwise but something is telling me he was better than expected there. I can't recall when or why he may have been shifted out based on injuries in the team etc.

He was nailing his shots at goal before injury, which was a huge improvement on 2022.

I don't have any issue with his skill, experience, leadership or professionalism, and would happily keep him. It's his age and our chance to make draft moves, and for that reason I'd also happily move him on. I think Scott keeps him.

If we can get a second rounder at least you probably take it. We’d be paying a huge whack of his salary but that’s not an issue.

Maybe we could target a couple of no nonsense veteran types. Not sure if anyone is available or not. Shiel's training standards have always been impressive, but I've never heard of him being mentioned as having good leadership qualities despite being a senior player.

I like Shiel and think he's a very good player, but we seem to have a logjam of mids, and I think we'd be better off getting another Setterfield type whilst giving players like Hobbs, Caldwell and Tsatas more midfield time. So I wouldn't be upset if we traded Shiel.

He was also sold a bit of a lemon when we traded him in then completely changed directions to rebuild the list, giving him the option of going elsewhere if he wants seems sensible.

100% I agree. I wouldn't mind seeing him get some success at another team. He hasn't got that long left and we're still at least a few years away you'd think.

If he wanted to stay you'd keep him for sure. I wouldn't push him out. However he might be playing more forward time than he'd prefer.

But if he was happy to move then it could free up midfield time for others. If that was the case I wouldn't ask for too much, and maybe even pay some of his salary. The extra list spot is benefitial for us.

At a club in contention, you could argue that a late first for Shiel and our 2nd is doable considering contract size and age.

Given our cap position if he was traded out you could pay a heap of salary and get a good pick in return. Possibly also bring in a player they can't afford anymore and take that entire salary too as part of the same deal.

I dunno who "they" are, if there are any clubs in a position that might want a deal like that.

Some combination of that as a salary dump would be fine but it would be a very tough sell to want Shiel, F2 & F3 considering the net salary cap savings for GWS would be close to $700k
