Trumps biggest advantage is he doesn't sound like a politician.

People know they're getting screwed. They're sick of the system screwing them and they're desperate.

Along comes Trump sounding different. Sure eventually like all snake oil salesman they get found out.

The problem is letting it get to the stage its at now.
I think it's the simplicity of the message.

GOP: You're poor because we let in too many migrants who take your jobs and suppress wages and use your taxes.

Dems: paragraphs of waffle, not wanting to point the blame at any one group or upset anybody, and talk about subtle changes across a range of metrics, redistributive taxes, long term educational outcomes, diversity........

GOP: Close the Border

Dems: We need to talk about the structural elements which......................................................................................................................... ........................................................................................................ ...............................................................................................and hope.

This overturns the fundamental promise of the United States - if you're born here, you're a citizen and if you work hard enough, you could one day be President!

Yes, but I’m also sick of hearing for ten years of “everyone who votes for Trump can go **** themself” and we’re now in a position where we’re ****ing ourselves.
So we're in a position where "we're **"*ing ourselves" but you want to be all touchy feely with the racists, sexists and homophobes who voted for it???

"Look what Biden made them do!!!"

When Americans said we're hurting because the economy is bad, the current Democrats sneered and said well ackchually its a great economy and here's a bunch of meaningless numbers that prove it.

The two most successful Democrat presidents since FDR in Clinton and Obama responded to voters who said they were hurting with "I feel your pain, things have to change."

The Americans know who and what he is by now surely. They have had 8 years to know.

Well, I'm accusing them of being the stupidest people who ever lived, so I'm not sure why you'd be expecting a lot of common sense. Ever watched the Jerry Springer Show? The people on stage, that's them.

They think trickle-down economics still works. That Jews run the world. That migrants stole their jobs. That healthcare couldn't possible be cheaper if it were single-payer like it is in every other country. That guns make them safer. That Jesus's return will happen in their lifetime.

They vote for Republicans, Republicans make their lives worse (cut welfare, infrastructure, healthcare, poison the water) and they look for something else to blame and the Republicans offer more basic answers they can understand.

I think that's very generalistic.

Not saying that i agree with them necessarily at least on all of those topics, but clearly a lot of US Citizens believe Trump was the better option, in fact the far majority of them do based on the popular vote...America didn't blow up the last time he was President. I think they will be OK this time.

I dont think grouping a whole bunch of people into negative categories, just because you dont like their opinion fits you well. I rate you as a much better poster than that.

Trump's as American as apple pie. Big TV star who loves wrestling, had a bodgy US football team, has been name checked in a zillion hip hop tracks.

He talks to that remembered old America of the 80s and 70s. He's like Rodney Dangerfield playing a character that's half Homer Simpson and half Andrew Dice Clay.

The Americans 100 per cent knew what they were getting and enough of them voted for him that he's now President.

He might’ve done a Nazi salute but at least he’s not said Palestinian people deserve to live, or else the ADL might have to say something about antisemitism.

This is why I love AOC;

Simple and stupid trumps complex and correct.

Most societal issues are complex and deep rooted.

Someone giving you simple solutions is either lying to you or a moron.

Ukraine is a clear comparison.

Dems, the Ukrainian war is a difficult and complex issue to which we have no clear solutions.

Trump, I will end the war, day 1.

The catastrophising rhetoric about Trump's threat to democracy really hurt the Democrats because it didn't gel with people's lived experience of last time ... in wuich January 6 has been somehow memory holed.

He IS an enormous threat to democracy now though, the slimeballs around him won't miss this opportunity to cement their power.

Hard to see the US avoiding full descent into a managed democracy a la Orban or early Putin now.

The popular vote margin was a whopping 1%.

That's a key issue as well.
Left progressive types do struggle to dumb down complex issues.

Some awful people voted for Trump, there’s no two ways about it. I just don’t think it’s wise, either on a realpolitik or philosophical level, to lump them all together.

Anyway, it’s a shit day and people are rightly emotional, I shouldn’t pick on you so I’ll leave it. Let’s hope the next four years aren’t as bad as we dread! We can annoy each other arguing about how to fix it tomorrow.

The popular vote margin was a whopping 1%.

So? it's still the majority and a MASSIVE swing on last year when the democrats won it by 6m votes.

All I'm saying is calling the majority of people dumb because they dont agree with you is silly.
