Player Profile

Lewis Melican is a young key defender with enormous promise. The Victorian was rookie-listed by the Sydney Swans in November 2014 and enjoyed a breakthrough 2017 season en route to winning the club’s Rising Star award. Melican has battled a number of injuries in his time in red and white but didn’t suffer any setbacks in 2019. Draft history: 2015 Rookie Draft selection (Sydney) No. 52.

I like Melly. He is solid. His opponent rarely kicks many on him. He is a calm influence back there. His ball use out of defence is so good. Rarely ever gives it up. When everyone else is panicking he always manages to do the best he can without any panic. There was a match last year where he was hemmed in near the behind post with about 3 metres and saw a player in a gap about 15 away. He kicked the ball around an opponent and hit him on the chest. Sensational solid footy.

He's never going to be flash. But he is a very good mark and spoil. He never gives his opponent an inch. He started out as an intercept defender who ran off. Now he is our best lockdown defender.

Found myself saying "well done Lewis" so many times last season. Fixed all his flaws and brought his strengths to the fore. Fantastic news.

Same.

Think you will also have seen his selflessness out at Blacktown, running messages for the twos and spreading positive vibes, despite struggling to get back on the park thru injury.

The only flaws i ever saw was he was injury prone
100% agree with this. I've always liked what I saw with Melican. When returning from injury he may have needed to regain conditioning, but when he's had a good run he's been almost flawless imo.

Hope he continues to stay fit and he'll continue to be a really important player for us.

Love this re-signing. Plus he seems like such a humble guy.
