I'd roll the dice on Dean. No point having him and he's fully fit, then not playing him
He's played AFL before - not up to standard but beggars can't be choosers - however, I still am inclined to prefer WHE playing as a third tall, and bring Membrey back.

Backline will be taking a hit with Moore but getting a gain with Houston. If we can keep them from having many inside 50s, as we have been doing, it won't be as big a loss. Also if we have heavy rain as forecast, will be a ground ball game and we'll be ok being a little shorter.

We are going to miss Darcy Moore, his ability to nail the occasion in his post match speech is irreplaceable.

Hope he’s ok, if we keep the ball out of our backline, we should be Ok

If Bruzzy speaks for more than 10 seconds, you'll know Moore has written it.

That was me. He changed back into white for match sim.

I'd be tempted to go with one of the young defenders, but best team will simply be Perryman staying back and Frampton, Howe and Bruzzy playing as the talls. We usually go best team.

For sure. We don't play a 1v1 defensive style anyway.

Move WHE down back and he can play the loose defender role.

Observations from training:

- Howe didn’t complete the session and looked sore throughout

- Cochran trained impressively

- Can’t afford to lose Maynard, consistently the only one who talks and directs all session, his leadership is so bloody good

- de goey is seriously out of shape, can’t produce any 2nd efforts atm, let’s hope he can build that fitness in season

- west an impressive young player but his tank isn’t afl level just yet, so will need to work on that. They even threw him down back to play on checkers and he competed well.

Does it seem like de goey is carrying an injury or he just needs match fitness?

Observations from training:
Warm conditions – unblemished deep blue sky with a few puffs of cloud rolling in late
Missing in action Moore due to Howe’s errant knee, Harvey Harrison and Reef .
Schultz ran laps, did some speed work and took shots for goal.
Houston will clearly return – he was in black, as was Membrey this week and he trained strongly, especially in the match simulation.
Dean was in white and one would suspect there will be a reshuffle to defence. Perryman and Crisp floated down there at times during match simulation while Frampton was the main pillar in defence. Maynard and Howe should be able to cover Caddy and the returning Langford while Frampton is an ideal match-up for Wright. Our defensive structure has been so good we shouldn’t miss a beat.
Tew trained very well, at one point showcasing a withering run down the middle with a raking kick which West just missed pulling in and he looks AFL ready if required.
Of those who played seniors against the Lions, Allan, Cox, Long, Steele and Hill wore white but Bobby, Sidey and Hill are no chance of being omitted so there is some chance that Mason is dropped with the prospect of wet conditions and McStay gives Cameron a chop-out in the ruck. If Membrey returns to support Checkers we should be well off for taller options in attack.
Interestingly Elliott played in the middle during the match-play with Nick spending some time in the forward line.
Josh played in defence but seemed to be moving well up the ground and at one point he snapped a beautiful left-foot goal.
Steele floated between the arcs spending some time in attack where he apparently also played on Monday.
McStay was much too smart and strong for Smit who was playing as a tall defender. At one stage he was out of position but came in from the side to intercept, copping a knock in the process and look a bit ginger despite kicking the goal.
Mitchell played in the middle and still looks strong enough at the contest to keep his opponents honest but Long looks to have gone past him and he featured prominently today bursting out of the centre square on occasions sending the ball forward.
Q also played in defence and he instigated some attacking moves.
Lippa was used on the wing, while Pendles enjoyed a brief stint forward. It looked like a lot of players were rotating through different positions today.
Hayes sporting the white intercepted the ball at one point on centre wing and went on a bouncy run leaving opponents in his wake but rather than push all the way to goal, he spotted Hill free and weighted the kick well so that Hill was able to convert for the white team.
Sullivan was also in white and he shone in some of the drills. WHE wore the black top and he was in attack for much of the match simulation.
Cox’s holey hands meant that there was some spillage from his attempts around the ground but the contest between the black and white team was quite willing today and the ball did move between both ends with alacrity at times.
Outside of match simulation, there was the customary robust warm-up complete with mini hurdles, rods etc.
There were some assorted activities involving evasive work, tackling and quick handballs with the outliers kicking to space. Quite often there were two teams at each station with one wearing black or white tops and the other a coloured vest.
The defence and forwards worked out as groups at opposite ends of the ground – the attacking crew at the John Cain Arena end with the defenders in front of the river goals.
There was also staggered sprinting which occurred either side of drills with the trainer urging the players to increase speed during the second iteration of this.
Smit trained with the defenders.
Cameron, Steene and some mids practised some stoppage work.
Am not really seeing anything in terms of AFL traits re. Harry DM. Likewise Jakob Ryan who doesn't stand out in match sim in the way that the likes of Tew, Hayes and West do.
Cochran played in defence.
It was a huge gathering of the Magpie faithful with a contingent from Scotch College along for the ride. Even spotted one of my students there.

Round 7 - Anzac Day, Main Training.

Very big turnout for training this morning, even though school is back in session. There was a big cohort from Scotch College with their teacher. But plenty other people and kids around the other side.

MIA:

Moore
Reef
Fin
Johnson
HH

Rehab:

Schultz, who did some running, he helped out with some drills as well.
It was clear he wasn't ready to play though.

I won't mention the jumpers they came out with, but during match sim this is how it went;

Black;

Lippa
JDG
IQ
Maynard
Elliott
Josh D
Houston
Pendles
Mcstay
Perryman
DC
Frampton
Crisp
Membrey
Beau
WHE
Nick D
Howe
Mihocek

  • Pendles, Nick, Jordy started in the middle.
  • Long. Sidey and Allan for the white side
  • Perryman was placed down back.
  • Howe went off early and didn't participate.
  • Lippa and Crisp on the wings
  • Markov + DeMattia opposite them in white
  • Steene is very DC like with how he drops back and takes contested marks in defence.
  • Smit playing on Mcstay and almost killed the kid in a contest, both coming in two sides, but nobody was hurt.

  • Mcstay, Checkers, Membrey, WHE in one forward line.
  • Unsure if this was just for training but the black defence was Frampton + Perryman, IQ, Josh, Houston and Maynard.
