Fairly solid performance overall, it truly could of gone either way

Team selection was pretty good considering what is available (and ready)

Coaching was pretty good (I'm not voting for his replacement like so many so called fans , so I am fairly impartial in what I see)

I don't think any player was below par, but no one really played out of sky either. Solid all around, just missing a bit of "Magic" when it was needed, but that sort of stuff can't be generated on demand..it's called magic for a reason.

0-3 is not what we wanted and as far as I am concerned not indictitive on where we are considering the last two weeks. I'll take my old Man's attitude "Remember Son, every loss puts you one game closer to a win" and how sweet it will be when we crack it in R4
Your optimism matches your cheery avatar, but I think selecting a young player would've been better than Evans.

A better coach would have us at 2-1, maybe even 3-0. I don't see the coaching good at all, primarily because the gameplan is so taxing that we run out of puff after half time. It has been evident in all three games.

By last 3 seasons you mean last half a season right?
Right?
I'll correct /explain myself.

2022 - he was a little better than average but he had a back injury so we brushed it off. I was one to shout this to the stars myself especially after his AA year the year before

2023 - recovering from back injury /delayed start due to hamstrings, so everyone made that excuse for his average season. Admittedly he had a great finals campaign and I thought we had turned the corner and he was back to his best

2024 - another delayed start and season of injuries. Again supposedly being the reason for his average form

2025 - been poor at the start of the season. I don't think it's a confidence thing

I'm not saying I don't rate him or that I want him traded (shake my head at that one), but I do think he has been average for the last three seasons and he need to do better

Yes he has injuries, yes they do play a part, but players do need to be held accountable for their form too

You should not be gifted games based on your name

And no i don't want him dropped from the team but I would love him on the wing where he can build up some form

We need to change our style, not completely but compliment it.

We need to start with identifying attacking players with exceptional foot and hand skills primarily off half back. In hindsight we should of really pushed to get the Houston trade done (I don’t know maybe we did).

We can win the ball back in our back half in general play no problem (defending a stoppage down there is a different story) but we rarely have run and carry options with a bit of pace and elite foot skills. I don’t know if the names I mention below can be those guys but no one knows that they can’t either because they haven’t played yet.

In the interim why dont we give Carroll, Wilson and White some game time. Saad is not what he was and doesn’t create nearly enough drive these days. As someone pointed out to me Boyd isn’t that type of player even though he is good by foot.

We don’t take enough chances with the young talent on the list and throw opportunities their way. Maybe we wont have to look outside if a couple of these guys step up.

I know we we’re confident of a good year and it could certainly still pan out but we seem to be doing largely the same thing with the same people and expecting a different result. We start fast , hold them off for a bit then fade.

There are older players playing who will need more breaks and there are players who really shouldn’t be in the seniors at the moment. Coincidentally the names I mentioned can fill those roles.

Blood them or move them on, sometimes i think coaches get caught up in the “player must be just right” before he can come into the side.

For discussion on the coach, Michael Voss:

For those who plumb the depths:

For those who need to rant:

To all opposition supporters who would come in here looking to try out some of their best jokes, perhaps take a day and think about whether it's the best idea.

Be kind to each other.
Sorry if I'm not welcome, but I voted for DeKoning, Lewie Young (surprised me greatly), Kemp (probably his best game), Cottrell, Silvagni, Weitering and Hewett.

Please knock off Collingwood

The 2 main differences in the game that I noticed at the ground was they were cleaner and quicker from stoppage, really hurt us on the spread and the general kicking to advantage discrepancy, we are well below average.
Our team are like the Walking Dead. Brain dead zombies the swarm in numbers, and if they get hold of you, you are done, but any space whatsoever, and it's easy outsmart them and to burn them off.
I've said this for the nth time, but it's the gameplan. It's too taxing. Look at how much work we have to do to just move the ball and score, whereas the opposition doesn't have to do as much.

You can have the best fitness professionals in the world and the players would still get tired. Not to mention that Voss is probably overriding Inness, just like he did with Russell.
Not to mention the endless faffing about, zig-zaging from one side of the ground to the other, then going backwards, then surging forwards just for it to hit the 80m mark and come straight back in.

First quarter we mauled the ball carrier, took the game on and looked electric… Fast, skilled and well drilled…

The for some stupid ****ing reason we slowed the game down, stopped spreading and then we get pressured, out of position then turn it over…

Either we’re unfit and can’t sustain it for more than 1 quarter or our coaches are dumb asses or it’s both…

Thought Hewett was fantastic, our best midfielder ATM. Cerra building, still in and out. Walsh the worst of our 4.

So happy for JSOS, he was brilliant. We might finally have a defensive partner for Weitering that we can rely on.

Didn't mind Haynes' game, if only because we've now finally got the luxury of dropping Gov. Gov was beyond insipid, and I blame him for single handedly costing us the game. Simply must be dropped.

Was evident from the practice matches that Doc is struggling. Not writing him off just yet but he needs an extended period in the 2s to build some form.

I love Acres but he's struggling. Interrupted preseason catching up to him. He's a liability at present. We need to stop insisting on building players up in the 1s, the reserves exist for a reason, and we have wing cover with Campo, Binns, Walsh and Ollie.

I do believe that the Doggies are a bottom 8 side and we lost to them without thier best

We have the spine of a very good side but now need to pull the trigger on a rebuild.

Play the kids and develop a strategy that is worth watching

Voss????

Acres - cooked

McGovern - cooked, doesn't play with desire (rarely has)

Haynes - too many brain farts in the 4th quarter. Was reasonable before that but a 32-year-old is on the list to be clutch and he fell to water. NEVER again.

Evans - I'm too personally invested. But an extremely limited footballer (at this level) who worked his ass off just to make it but really doesn't belong (sadly). Both club's he's been at before now absolutely loved him.

Fogarty - I love Fog but he's a prime example with the list management on this team. He works his bloody ass off up and down the track. Vossy has him in a position that within the system that he insists that we play he's just lacking too much of the physical attributes to do the job. I'll forever appreciate the back end of his 2023 campaign. But we've had two years to identify that as a position that needed upgrading and we've not done so.

Think you're missing Docherty

Docherty needs to go back to the VFL and build form in the twos. It's a massive fall from grace for a club champion but it must be done. Not good enough on either side of the ball right now. It doesn't mean that he can't get back there but he'd be worth a lot more mentoring what young players we have in the VFL.
Acres back surgery pre-season, it's way too soon to put a line under him. I will cut him some slack. Doc yeah prob cooked, fine for him to give this season a go, but I think this will be it.

Haynes I thought was ok, but no real point to him really. Wouldnt be playing if Newman was fit.

Gov - in self preservation mode, hes out of contract end of this year, be interesting what the rest of the season holds for him and beyond.

Evans - jebus, I thought our existing small forwards were poor and limited, and then we get this guy

I don't think it's all fitness. When we are on a roll we find the energy.
It's those useless hack kicks that turn the ball over and undo 10mins of good footy. It saps energy and really sucks the wind out of our sails.

Kicking efficiency wins games. That's why the Hawks are sitting on top of the ladder. They don't have to do half the work to get the score board ticking over.

First half showed glimpses 2023 form - controlling the tempo, working hard for one another to get into space and spread and most importantly lowering the eyes and hitting short targets. Was good to watch live.

Second half resorted to same football we have been treated to from 2024 onwards. Long balls forward to no one, fowards leading backwards into pockets (not at the ball) whilst the midfield hits the defender on the chest and opposition goals off turnovers and skill errors.

We are nowhere near as good as we thought we were unfortunately. If we can work out the reasons for the drop off in games (it has to be fitness surely?) maybe we can finish in that 7-12 bracket. It's going to be a very long season at this rate of playing half a game of footy still!
Is the fitness thing some weird over compensation (this seems to have happened ever since voss took charge, veering from one extreme to the other) where we havent gone as hard in the pre-season to have less injuries (though we still have lots of injuries), so now we can't run out games at all?

We had come out relatively firing in each of the first 3 Voss seasons - 2022 4-1; 2023 3.5 wins out of 4; 2024 5-1 now we sit 0-3. I mean we could be playing 4D chess, more likely we are just shit.

Not so Little Dirty and I were present tonight, the footy was only the beginning of the debarkle as the Ballarat trains were delayed by an hour due to "something on the track" and the "we don't have a driver"!
Thought the entire Carlton coaching panel had taken over V-Line!!
Apparently we were in front for 100 minutes.....all I want to know is why JSOS (our best player by a f****** mile tonight) was off the field with less than ten minutes to go?!?!?!?!?!?! Talk about gifting 4 points, Jack had single headedly provided composure, drive and desperation to the defence but for some f***** up "player minute demarcation" found himself on the pine when the match was to be won! FFS!
Killed us. Don't ever actually remember seeing Weiters on the bench, JSOS is the missing tall, he simply plays 100% game time, do you think his old man would ever agree to some yellow clad w***er telling him to "rest"......Yeah, nah!
I don't want to sound like some happy clapper, but this team is microseconds from victory. Ironic as it will sound loosing Williams to an Achilles is bad as he was the one demonstrating to his peers how to break lines along with Saad.
Some takeaways...Evans WTF???
Doc, time to shoot Bambi
Motlop, no way Moir is worse
Cott's, surely has incriminating photos, otherwise he must be Vossie's illegitimate lovechild?? Fog gets a reprieve due to Williams

Not happy Jan

honorable loss.... very familiar.

We can talk all day about the players we should drop, but what this season is fully exposing is that our list is just not good, it's not deep, it's not strong. The players we have in the 2's are not banging down the door to get in the 1's.

We dreamed that when Cripps, Curnow, Weitering, McKay all got to their prime we would be competing for premierships... but that was never a guarantee, always just a dream.... We have some good players, but minimal depth and no consistency... I dont think we're well coached, but even if we were I'm still not convinced our list is at the level for a real contender.

We're somewhere in the 14th - 6th range, and I hate to say it but we're going to have to be patient for a good while longer before we are truly a top 4 contender. Like the rest of you, I'm just exhausted by this.

This. This needs its own thread on our board.

The most ridiculous, ignorant, gutless "supporter" base going around.

As a grown adult if:

You're sick of losing? We all hate it but don't turn on the players who are mostly trying.

The outcome of Calrton games ruins your weekend? Work harder to get over it quicker, leave your sad pants in the seat at the ground.

You're embarrassed that supporters of other teams give you grief because our club is not playing well right now? Let me get the world's smallest violin out for you.

The sad part is, most wouldn't have the self-awareness to identify themselves as the problem. And most likely, have never played nor coached sport to any reasonable standard.

It's becoming so toxic I'm having arguments at games now, because I get so fired up that I can't bring my 8 year old, for the same reason as in the quote.
Yeah the level of entitlement amongst some fans is, well, special. Perspective there are 17 other clubs trying to do exactly what we are doing, we aren't owed success just cos Carlton.

Also the biggest misnomer in football "fans just want to see effort", well I don't think you can fault our effort. You can fault lack of skill (prob on and off the field to be fair), and people still lose their minds.

Thing is other clubs have elite players too, like well, lots of them. Our top 4-5 don't make us a flag team, they make us not totally garbage, but tonight showed us what we already know, we are too slow, lack good small forwards and foot skills. What do we have? Good big bodied mids, a really good ruck (now), 2 gun key forwards (currently 0.5 until charlie is 100% then it will be 1, and then when harry is ok it will be 2), an elite full back and a decent defence overall.

At the moment our strengths aren't functional and firing, then you have a spluttering below their best for various reasons (injury or form) Acres, Walsh, Gov and Doc (though this could be the new normal for him).

Then you have one of our best performers in the Voss era out for the season in Newman, the guy we gave up depth and draft picks to get Jagga Smith out for the season too, then potential depth guys who could be pushing for selection to replace out of form/struggling with injury/unavailable guys injured or only just available with limited preparation (Fantasia, B Camporeale, Boyd just came back this week, Pitt, O'Keefe, E Hollands, Corey Durdin, Cincotta, Matt Carroll, Billy wilson).

Add to that a hit to the depth from last year with no Owies or Kennedy. (reasons for that, may all work out longer term, but its hurting us in the here and now)

So we are kinda stuck with what we have at the moment, and truth be told even with everything going smoothly we are prob just a bottom part of the 8 side at best (which you could say about 12-13 other sides), which is to say our list is nothing special or unique. Its not Carlton circa 2015, but neither is it GWS, Brisbane, Hawthorn or many others, Dogs list is much better and more balanced as well.

I just wish the club would roll out McGovern for a post match I'm dissapoited frustrated crappola..Tired of hearing from weiters and cripps TDK all of who give it everything every week..
