AFL clubs should title all these guys Chief Witch Doctor. Because it's mostly myth.

Mentioned it a number of time, best change we made has nothing to do with HP, moreso list management, when moving on injury prone players

The health of the list will then likely improve, Inness will get the accolades, while Russell will continue to get slammed

Russell would’ve been involved in the decision not to delist the injury prone sooner you would imagine. His expertise opinion or a belief he could get them healthy would’ve surely been a high consideration in retainment.

A heavy focus was put on increasing strength over the off-season, with Russell pleased with some of the results he's seen already.

“We really worked hard in the off-season on increasing their strength and becoming more powerful as athletes,” Russell said.

Sounds awfully similar to what the new guy is doing. Maybe Inness approach is different and tailored for different players. Let’s hope he gets better results from the collective group this year.

More likely the injured crew all getting and staying fit at the same time in the back half of 2023 - as glorious as our run that year was, it papered over a lot of cracks and postponed the necessary list refresh

Thanks for your insights Soapy; much appreciated! I have a background in strength and conditioning and have wondered for sometime if Russell had too much of a focus on endurance and not enough on power and strength, looking at our lists’ general build and lack of burst/speed. His personal pursuits were/are distance running… seemed hellbent on players being lean, particularly injury prone ones. Obviously there is a fine balance between being too heavy with muscle mass and not being able to cover enough ground. Also, if muscle mass is put on too quickly, players’ bodies may become overly stressed with the sudden added weight to carry when doing so much running - legs, feet, pelvis and lower spine. Cottrell reportedly added a lot of weight (muscle) during the last preseason and ended up with navicular stress reaction in his left foot…

If you compare our players’ body shapes to teams like Geelong there has been a stark difference. Iness’ influence will hopefully be transformational on our style of play and our perceived lack of speed. I wonder if we have had a highly specialised sprint and strength coach? Why do players such as Cripps and Big H need to seek sprint coaches outside of our club???
Agree: Russell appeared to have taken things too far with respect to a lean endurance build, and players were largely tapped out in terms of aerobic endurance, with less left in the tank for anaerobic performance as required.

Aussie Rules has more varied requirements than other forms of football, and I think between Russell being a tad dogmatic, and the athletic and injury profile of our list, we've been redlining the endurance aspect for way too long alongside that.

No one metric is the be all and end all, but would be curious to see how cortisol levels were behaving for our players when the shit was hitting the fan in the last few seasons, especially in contrast to the competition leaders.

I honestly think Russell had the knowledge and ability to turn this around, but for whatever reason, he just never did.

Cripps never got big and slow. His poor form coincided with him dropping to much weight in effort to boost his running.

That was 2020 though he was poor in 2021 too.
There definitely was a time a few years ago where he got a lot bigger up top and it impacted on his mobility (not that he's a speedster).

“I’ll never forget three or four years ago I was calling a game where Cripps dominated against Brisbane and you walked away thinking whether he was the best player in the game,” he said on Sportsday.

“He’s tried putting on weight to get bigger and strong and then tried to lose weight to become quicker… he was trying to be too much and I think Adam Cerra coming in is good for him.

I remember when Lloyd said that and thought he got it wrong at the time. Cripps lost weight in 2020 which coincided with his poor form. In 2018 and 2019 Cripps all australian. If he tried to put on to much muscle in those years it certainly wasnt hurting him.

He could be refering to 2021 and got the order wrong but as it turned out, it was a back injury that was affecting his mobility.

Nah, most of those perennially injured he had for most of their careers…then you have previously durable players turning into paper mache

At least - years too late, but better late than never

I remember at the time Leigh Matthews referred to Cripps as a‘journeyman’ when he went through that period when he was injured.
